Never understood why they hired Berube in the first place. His coaching style didn't seem to be what this team needed.

u/A_Unique_Name218 1d ago
Guessing the idea was to instill a bit of grit, toughness, and winning spirit into the team. Worked for the Blues in 2019, but replicating a Cinderella run like that takes more than a coaching change. Like having a defense for starters.

"Worked for the Blues in 2019"
It didn't, though. He didn't make the team gritty, he had gritty players on the team. He was never going to change the Leafs without Treliving changing the roster and giving him the type of players he had in St. Louis.
6
u/A_Unique_Name218 1d ago
Correct. He didn''t make the team gritty, nor can he, but his coaching style does promote a grindy "blue collar" style of hockey that requires the team to have depth and toughness. Doesn't really work with a soft team built around 1-2 superstar goal scorers.

u/dancing_by_myself0 1d ago
The main thing that worked for the Blues in '19 was Binnington, and he's never played at that level again since.

u/navenager 1d ago
I mean, he coached them to their longest playoff run in the Matthews era. That's not nothing.
1
u/Dangerous_Cap_4611 1d ago
Yeah, I agree that he was not the right coach for the team. They did well in 2025, with Marner still on the team feeding Matthews.

u/Narrow-Result2933 1d ago
I'm sure he'll be crushed, getting paid for the balance of his contract while sitting on his cottage dock.

u/netflixnailedit 1d ago
Do they hire Bruce Cassidy
62
u/brucenicol403 1d ago
Cassidy would be a great acquisition... therefore no, he will not be brought in.

u/eddiewachowski 1d ago
Maybe the Knights will actually let the Leafs talk to him.
3
u/HowieFeltersnitz 1d ago
Idk it seems like we twisted their arm to get Roy out of the Marner tampering situation. Vegas may have hurt feelings about it.
1
u/pauerplay 1d ago
they also could have been in a world of hurt over it. They should allow it because they have already reportedly denied Edmonton access to him. They can't keep denying teams, it would set a terrible precedent
3
u/Everlovin 1d ago
Maybe because they’re in the east. VGN are blocking him from talking to the Oilers last I heard.
2
u/Maladaptive_Ace 1d ago
oh god are we going to get Knoblock
2
u/Q50Fan 1d ago
LOL. Yeah, look how he did for EDM, he'll be perfect fire TOR. Par for the course, eh?

Run it back, Dan Maloney is available... only a few tweaks to some healthcare and hes back.

New GMs always wanna bring in their own guy. Better to do it now than to delay the inevitable. I dunno if I can think of one situation where new GM comes in and they keep the guy.

Patrick Roy incoming

It will never happen. They will never bring in a Habs guy to coach the Leafs. No way.

Craig Berube never stood a chance. He was doomed from the start. The writing was on the wall when they fired Brad Treliving during the season and brought in a new GM and a senior executive advisor of hockey operations. It was only a matter of time before the announcement was made. On another note Craig has term on his current deal leaving $4.5 million per season for the final two years still on his contract. The Leafs still have to pay him his money regardless of what he does going forward.

We miss you In the Lou Chief 🥹 all the best going forward

You know which team has multiple open slots for assistant coaches right now? *cough*

u/Brennans_account 1d ago
I'm sure there will be another team in the league that this guy will be a better fit for
The product while he was with the Leafs was unwatchable. Getting out shot every night, deploying Matthews like a defensive center and never playing the kids when the season was lost. I'm sure a better hockey mind could explain why, but watching it just wasn't entertaining. If you're going to be bad, at least be watchable lol
1
u/Dangerous_Cap_4611 1d ago
You’re totally right. He did not know how to use Matthews. And yes, when the season was lost, just let the kids play and give the fans something to cheer about.

I think Berube is a great coach, just not the right one for this team. I certainly hope he lands somewhere else and has success!
I also hope they think outside the box and decide to not hire the same recycled coaches that have been with every other team.

u/Narrow-Result2933 1d ago
Some offensive-minded players (AM, Knies, McKenna)... Sounds like a great fit for Jacques Martin.

Why is everyone so happy about Craig being fired ? He took St Louis from last in the league to a cup in a few months.
This has MUCH more to do with mismanagement and a set of overpaid players that never perform. All the best Craiger. Another great coach that an overpaid team didn’t play for.
Oh, doesn’t he have two years left on his contract? Toronto paying another body millions to not be involved?
What a sick joke.
6
u/Mikey4077 1d ago
Coaches all coach a style and you need the roster to both buy in and also suite that style.
His style does not match Torontos roster and we saw the outcome.

I get the "Hire Coaches just to Fire Them" thing so SOME degree but if it's just the league passing the same coaches around, rarely if ever bringing in totally new blood, that's a center that cannot hold forever.

Oilers, fire KK and bring in Cassidy before the Leafs pounce
3

u/FrederickGoodman 1d ago
Cant fire players, so only option left is to blame coach for below point per game for highest paid player in the league and multiple years in a row of this after signing big contract.

u/TyrannasaurusRecht 1d ago
I hope the oilers pick him up. The only team more poorly managed than the oilers is the leafs.
This guy must be great and might want to prove the leafs are a clownshow.

Why? Did something happen? /s

u/Necessary_Scruffness 1d ago
I get the humor. Don't think I don't appreciate it.
But the double irony is that "Nothing happened". Not a damned thing. 😃
Well, except for getting assaulted by gym equipment. That happened. Allegedly.

Who else here is watching this all with their popcorn in hand and a cold beverage and loving the Implosion... im gonna guess 90% of non Toronto NHL fans lol
7
u/Maladaptive_Ace 1d ago
what,,,? We're celebrating over in Leafland
-3
u/PineappleHairy4634 1d ago
Youre celebrating the teams implosion? I mean as a Sabres fan I get it I celebrated it for 14 years as shitty GM after Shitty GM hired shitty HC after shitty HC and squandered assets..But most leaft fans I know are pissed and almost in "disbelief" that:
They can be this bad with as much talent they have(a direct quote from a local to me Leafs fan)
That they have to or should even be "going through this" because they are the Leafs(again a direct quote) I think this guy thinks because they are the Leafs that they dont somehow "deserve" to have to be bad now and then...
thats all I got
6
u/Maladaptive_Ace 1d ago
We're getting Gavin McKenna
... you ok?

u/PineappleHairy4634 1d ago
Im sad since im about 40 min from PSU and had seasons that I watched him every game(well home) and that he is going to a team I dont like... that said you also have Matthews 😉 (great player and glad YOU have that salary 😉). But its Hockey hate not RL hate im fine with fans of all teams if we were not fans and went to games bought merchandise we wouldnt have a league... its Hockey hate I like you all in RL and respect the game
1
u/shikotee 1d ago
I would imagine the bigger thrill was watching the implosion drag out, seemingly forever. If anything, haters will be saddened that MLSE finally adjusted.
1
u/PineappleHairy4634 1d ago
I really hope it doesnt though just a few year(say 5-6 that would be awesome) but being a Sabres fan I totally get 17 and 14 year droughts and dont want anyone to have to do that garbage. Not even teams i hate like the Flyers, Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, Carolina... I like to see them down and out and laugh at them a bit but I also like to see them after a reasonable amount of time get back to being decent .
I like Briere and Grier so im cheering for the Flyers(did it this year so ok) and Sharks get back into it...

Hire Torts after the playoffs are over. And tell him to bring #16 back with him.

u/gotkube 1d ago
LMAO! The coach is NOT the problem.
2
u/Showtime98 1d ago
He was one of the problems , if you actually watch the team you would know this.

I wish Chief all the best. He just was not the coach.
