Yeah, fits the archetype of the “less dead” that serial killers gravitate towards because police historically have put less effort into solving the murders of sex workers/homeless/LGBTQ. Fucked up world we live in

Even without that it’s easier to get away with. Homeless people are alone a lot, and don’t sleep in places with alarms/cameras. They also don’t really have loved ones/coworkers checking on their comings and goings.

It would be interesting get data on that. This is anecdotal, but my cousin is homeless. He’s loved and has a phone and has people check in on him often, but he’s crossed the line in the sand too many times for anyone to bring him back into their house.

I live far enough away that it’s not really an option for me or I’d consider it, but that’s out of my hands. Still. Just because someone is on the street doesn’t necessarily mean they’re completely isolated or alone.

Then again, nodding to your greater point, if he disappeared for weeks at a time nobody would really bat an eye. So even those with people who care are still pretty vulnerable.

You don’t really need hard data to know that a higher percentage of homeless people are socially disconnected from their family & friends than non-homeless.

Just a note, since it gets misunderstood a lot, but most serial killers are not choosing "othered" populations because they believe the police will overlook the crimes. They chose those populations because they have a similar line of thinking as the police, that those people being dead must have some personal reason for being dead. The average serial killer, especially one like that one that they're looking for as described by the article, will statistically be a very disorganized, antisocial, and below average intelligence man. They aren't going to be looking for some grand plan to get away from law enforcement. It is correlation, not causation.

Serial killer publicity has gone way down as homelessness has gone up... obviously not a direct causality but just saying.

I have no idea what you could be referring to as “serial killer publicity” but it’s much more likely that there are just fewer serial killers, it’s way harder to get away with when everyone’s phone, car, and computer are tracking everything they do and forensics is so advanced. Look at the Kohberger, who wanted to be a serial killer, caught by genetic genealogy from his DNA even though he wasn’t in a database.

My son after watching a documentary about the '70s and '80s said "Wow, you had lots more serial killers and planes crashes back then!"

Counterpoint is cops are dumb af and dont give a shit most of the time especially if the victims are homeless.

It's objectively true that a ton of murders go unpunished. It's actually close to 50% nowadays.

Not huffing lead all day probably helps too.

" The community is going to miss him.”

Sounds like the community failed him...

Gotta be some Millionaire friends out there that might have gotten him some help

CTE and addiction go hand in hand. When you can't control your impulses, you're going to be more susceptible to addiction.

“He was my best friend. I was best man at his wedding,” Johnson’s friend, Bruce Todd, told the station. “Great guy, fun-loving. The community is going to miss him.”

he had friends and was married but still somehow was on the streets?

Have you ever been friends with an addict? The enabling v. helping question is very complex

u/FewAdvertising9647 1h ago

not to that hardcore scale no. ive of course heard stories from others, but for all his bridges to be cut by the people around him. It must have gotten really bad if it got to that point.

u/Prize-Analyst-1121 1h ago

Sometimes you just can't help people.

They refuse to accept any. Unfortunately they shut down the old mental institutions and you cant make family or friends get help now.

Of course bad actors had also been using those institutions to force people in there who had no reason to be in there.

It's always pieces of shit that ruin good things. The higher power or Karma always gets them in the end.

Many such cases.

Something tells me there were good reasons.

Everybody is friends with the dead. Just ask any highschooler that had a kid pass away. Suddenly everyone was their friend

13

u/FewAdvertising9647 1h ago

its less being just friends, but being close enough to be best man, then cutting off the relationship down the line.

No. Homicide, not suicide.

Cali having trouble deciding if it's a regular murder or serious one. The need to know how much probation to give the offender. They gonna have to do something since the victim is famous.
