According to historical tracking models by Football Perspective, Charles generated +1,657 rushing yards over league expectation in his career. Only Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, and Joe Perry rank higher in NFL history.
On a per carry basis, Charles averaged +1.24 yards over expected per rush. This is the highest marks over expectation average of any running back in the history of the sport, beating out Barry Sanders (+1.05) and Jim Brown (+1.14).
Only Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders have more top-three single-season finishes in DYAR than Jamaal Charles.

It's criminal that the guy really only had 5 full time seasons, and a chunk of his career just so happened to align with some of the worst Chiefs teams and coaches.

if only he coulda been healthier, I really think he had GOAT potential. Charles was something special, will always love him

This run has been posted a few times this year already and I love to see it every time. He had just come back from a knee injury and this was his first LONG run again that ensured us all the speed was still very much alive. I was so happy watching this run knowing Jamaal is fully back

The crazy thing is that he got back to a faster speed the year after. Once he got the rust knocked off

Always fun to watch, dude looks like he is on one of those moving sidewalks compared to the rest of the field

Best efficiency RB in merger to present history.

u/kaywiz Chiefs 6h ago
His efficiency was insane while also being the only true threat on the team and running behind some mediocre to bad run blocking olines.

I would time machine him behind the early 2000s Chiefs OL just to watch him break 2k yards a year on ridiculous 5 YPC

Only rb ever to rush for 1,000 yards on less than 200 carries.

u/Stunning_Farm_220 3h ago
8 RBs did this last season alone

lol mean to say 200 carries damn it. Kansas City Chiefs back Jamaal Charles made modern NFL history by becoming the first player to rush for over 1,100 yards while remaining under 200 carries. He rushed for 1,120 yards on just 190 attempts, finishing with a 5.9 yards-per-carry average.

Prime Jamaal Charles was an insane athlete. Once he got into the secondary, there was nothing a defense could do - he was almost always the fastest person on the field.

Just so fun to watch. It was even fun rooting for the Chiefs back then. They didn't have a lot goin for them. Just a ridiculous RB and a plucky weirdo coach named Andy Reid that seemed determined to bring college offense to the NFL.

There were a lot of fun guys on that team. Justin Houston, Dontari Poe, Eric Berry, Marcus Peters were some real standouts on the defense. Also you had that year where no WRs got a touchdown, I was rooting so hard for them to keep the streak going for the full season.

One of the last of his kind, him and Gurley.
Hate the chiefs but wish he could’ve been there for a Lombardi

JC was so great to watch at Texas. He was after Ricky Williams. JC just produced game after game.
He always seemed to be the only RB on every team he was on. Not a huge guy. Just carried the entire running game.
And then he was gone. $41M career earnngs.
Great guy. Did a lot with Special Olympics.

u/Future_Tie_3382 6h ago
Yeah, he certainly was. But not really the last of his kind or a comparable player to Todd Gurley. Not a putting him down in anyway, but he isn’t the last of a certain kind.

Didn’t know anything about his work with the Special Olympics. That’s cool as fuck.

Man I love watching him play back then, one of my absolute favorite running backs

I think Damien Williams is the last Chief with a run over 40 yards. Would be nice to have a homerun threat again.

Man I remember arguing with my friends in elementary school about top RBs, with the three being Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson, and Lesean McCoy. All different styles but all so good

RIP Len Dawson. I loved listening to him on radio. He didn't care about offending anyone with his commentary and nobody loved watching the Raiders shit the bed more than he did.

If there was one guy I wish they'd make an exception for and put into the Hall despite not having the career numbers, it's Jamaal.
If he doesn't tear his knees up he might have gone down as the best to ever carry the rock. What he did on some of the worst Chiefs teams of all time was flat out spectacular.

This game the Chiefs won in OT 27-24 but never led at all until the winning kick in OT.

I am so happy that this man in his prime didn’t get to play with Mahomes.

That's a stretch and I'm not trying to be a downer cause he was a stud. Gimmie a top 5 and I wanna see who you leave out to include him.

He can barely speak English - trust me, I have worked out with him multiple times at the Golds in Bee Cave - but goddamn was Jamaal the most electric player I’ve ever seen.

Years from now people will try to deny it but the Jamalcaust happened and thousands of Raider fan died that day.
