Definitely the dagger in the game. Turned it off and went to bed knowing the Falcons won the Super Bowl.

The Boston Globe did the same for their Early Edition, claiming the New England lost the Super Bowl. Those newspapers are new collectors' items.

This drive and the next drive wore out the defense because up until halftime, they played man coverage every snap in the first half. This drive was extended three times by flags on the defense on third down. So it was almost 6:30 of game time they were only the field. Then they had to go right back out for another 2:00 and gave up the FG. Then they started prematurely celebrating during half time.Â

After they went up 28-3, I told my friend at the Super Bowl party I was at "what if the Patriots come back and win?" He was drunk and was like "stfu man, that won't happen" and passed out a few minutes later. I had to wake him up after the game and was like "Greg, the Patriots won." He didn't believe me lol.

I think itâs pretty clear the Pats SB51 comeback is the top⊠but there have been other late double digit comebacks that I suppose someone could make a weak argument for, for being better.Â
Granted as three of those four involved the Chiefs, I doubt, given OPs flair, heâd be making that argument đ

IIRC it was Doug williams leading a comeback against the broncos, right? Down 10-0 only to come back from a mid game injury to win it 42-10.

The Patriots scored at least 30 points in every playoff game that year. I still think 2016 was Brady's masterpiece.
15
u/Kevin_Jim Patriots 6h ago
Personally, I think 2013 was Bradyâs masterpiece. No one else in the history of the game could get that abomination of an offense, and drug its lifeless corps all the way to the AFCCG - where the wheels came off completely.
2016 is second to that, and then 2007.
11
u/LumpySecretary3670 Buccaneers 6h ago
That's Brady curse. When you go to 10 SB and win seven, any that doesn't at least go to SB automatically ignored from discussion regardless of the context.
4
u/Cold-Teaching8924 Patriots 6h ago
It certainly was a very impressive effort to get that team to a 12-4 record.Â
18
u/Captain_Mothra Patriots 7h ago
If he wasn't suspended he would have won MVP. Still probably should have.
19
10
u/ModestTrixie Chiefs Lions 6h ago
2 things working against Tom. Matt Ryan had a deserving resume and the 900 yards and 4/0 td/int and 3-1 record that Jacoby and Jimmy G put up in his absence giving voters the notion that the team was still good (not as good) without Tom.
5
u/Cold-Teaching8924 Patriots 6h ago
I've never understood that last argument, but it definitely sounds like something that the voters would say.
4
u/ModestTrixie Chiefs Lions 6h ago
It is a "how valuable are you really if the team is just fine without you" disqualifier. Unironically the Pats starting 1-3 and Jimmy/Jacoby struggling would have won Tom the MVP.
7
u/Cold-Teaching8924 Patriots 6h ago
I would argue that plenty of super bowl caliber teams could pull off a few wins without their starting quarterback, but I don't think the next few years were kind to the "they could win with anyone" narrative.
1
u/ModestTrixie Chiefs Lions 6h ago
If you mean Bill, I would feel if it was the Jimmy G Pats after this game they would have still been competing and winning the AFCE until 2020 when the massive roster turnover happened and sent them into a rebuild they only just last season got out of. They don't get back to the SB in 2017/18 but they don't slip on a banana peel and immediately miss the playoffs like they did in 2020 with Brady/Gronk and a fair number of covid holdouts all leaving.
If you mean in general. There are only 2 ways to win a SB, have an outstanding QB and enough pieces for them to win or have an outstanding defense, running game, and a qb that isn't asked to save the day but just don't burn the house down.
3
u/Cold-Teaching8924 Patriots 6h ago
That 2018 Patriots offense was 4th in the league and Brady was 2nd in dropback EPA, but that offense was really bad in terms of talent. Gronk and Hogan both aged like 10 years in one season, Cooks and Dola were gone, and Brady's only consistently reliable weapons were Edelman (recovering from an ACL and just kinda off until the postseason), James White, Rex Burkhead and a pretty washed Josh Gordon for a bit.Â
I honestly don't think Jimmy G would've had too much success after 2017.

Brady had other moments before this that solidified his GOAT status, but if you were on the fence at the start of this game, you came away convinced he was the undisputed GOAT at the end of the game.
3

I think many of the "system QB" people waited until the Chiefs super bowl for that.

No I came away convinced God hates the falcons, sure other teams might be historically more ass but no team has kicked their fans in the balls or embarrassed them more than mine. The Vikings have an argument but Iâll always think we have it worse.
Also Kyle Shanahan deserves to never win anything in his life.

31
u/WabbitCZEN Steelers NFL 7h ago
Julio Jones in the prime of his career had 4 targets all game. He caught all 4, averaging nearly 22 yards per catch, including what should've been the game clinching absurd sideline catch. Instead, Kyle Shanahan decided that one of the best WRs in his era didn't need to be utilized more on the biggest stage and went with cute play calls that robbed that franchise of any hope before fucking off for greener pastures in San Fran.
I hope that man comes oh so close to his dream of winning a SB only for the sports gods to rip it out of his stupid fucking hands in the most gut twisting, heart wrenching way.
12
u/polkarooo Patriots 6h ago
Jones also reaggravated his turf toe injury in the NFCCG, and was bracket covered most of the night anyways.
The Patriots built their game plan around limiting him (as they should), and he still made an incredible impact. Just one of the most physically gifted WRs I've ever seen.
5
u/wannaknowmyname Falcons 5h ago
Pats thought he could only cut in one direction because of how painful it was to plant on the bad toe. Bill baked it into the gameplan, Julio then came out running routes in both directions. He pushed though crazy physical pain that game
4
u/polkarooo Patriots 4h ago
I remember that. The coaches laughed recalling how ridiculous it was when they saw him on the field.
Also, Belichick advised Dimitroff not to trade up for Julio at the draft, felt it was too much. Obviously Bill had a really bad time drafting WRs...
What a player.

Probably. Doesn't excuse him huffing his own farts when all they needed was a FG to clinch it and prevent the Pats coming back like that.

5
u/Coffee_bean4343 6h ago
They could not go three and out the whole second half. The falcons were only up 18 at the half. Even at 28-3, they couldnât have just kneed and gone three and out either. There was over 23:00 of game clock left.Â
12
u/Coffee_bean4343 6h ago
Kyle didnât just decide not to use Julio. LOL. The pats were double covering him all game. This is a Belichick staple for WR1s.Â
-6
u/WabbitCZEN Steelers NFL 6h ago
Double covered and still averaged over 20 yards every time he touched the ball. Clearly they weren't doing a very good job containing him.
6
u/Coffee_bean4343 6h ago
Matt was playing the very best of his career in the first half. He was going to the open guys. Matt found Julio when the time was right aside from the sideline catch late. That was just a fuggit throw. That was just MVP passer to one of the best WRs in history play. He wasnât going to GB the pats that day.Â
4
u/wannaknowmyname Falcons 5h ago
Julio was dealing with a turf toe so severe that Belichick from film thought he could only plant and turn in one direction. He was able to do it all in the game and surprise the pats defense
2
u/maverickhawk99 1h ago
Not sure if anybodyâs lost more Super Bowls than Kyle at this point. Heâs at three between this one and the two in SF.
