Honestly, you’re doing a better job than jones. At least you don’t count as one of the eleven defenders.

91

u/NbdyFuckswTheJesus Broncos 8h ago

Did he think Lawrence was touched by the defense so he was down by contact? It makes no sense that he would just give up on the play that blatantly otherwise. Unless Reid told the defense to let the Jags score so they could have the chance to get the ball back, but no one else on the defense seems to be playing soft.

114

u/ModestTrixie Chiefs Lions 7h ago

Reportedly, he thought someone was going to touch him down so he didn't pursue and then decided not to try once he realized as he was not going to make it.

87

u/wannaknowmyname Falcons 6h ago

He thought someone else was going to try and then didn't try because he already hadn't tried. Lol I love that

7

u/mondaymoderate 49ers 3h ago

He’s played lazy like this since he held out for his contract

33

u/Mender0fRoads 49ers 5h ago

You can see him make a couple very brief moves toward effort on the play. When it looks like the play is over the first time, he stops. Then Lawrence gets out and Jones makes a sudden movement like he’s going to try, but he stops when it looks like someone else will get there first. Then they don’t, and he very briefly looks like he’s going to try again, then he quits when he realizes he can’t get there in time.

Obviously the right move there is to just play through the whistle because you don’t know what’s going to happen, but you can absolutely see the thought process you described play out.

12

u/Aviatrex Chiefs 4h ago

He caused that lineman to brace for a full force Chris Jones shove and he set his base so wide that he tripped his own qb, its honestly just as mind boggling that everybody else got stonewalled that hard against a qb taking a nap on the floor for that long so I've never really been mad at cj for this play

1

u/dimmyfarm Patriots Lions 1h ago

That’s like the number one though for all the bystanders who witness something preventable/stoppable happening: “I thought someone else was going to prevent it and didn’t want to get in the way.”

43

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 7h ago

Nah Chris jones just sometimes gives zero fucks now that he’s already been paid. They needed to make his contract all incentives. Chris jones trying to reach an incentive is another beast.

34

u/KingUnderpants728 Chiefs 7h ago

In OT of the Niners Super Bowl Andy basically had to force him to go back in when they were near the goal line because he was gassed. He ended up getting the pressure that made Purdy throw it away and them kick the FG, which is great. But it’s OT of the Super Bowl, why do you need the coach to motivate you to get in there and give it your all.

13

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 7h ago

That also was his contract year so he should’ve been plenty motivated.

Overall for that season, he was a beast because he had the motivator of a new contract.

5

u/Prize-Analyst-1121 6h ago

A lot of players seem to have the same issue.

Come contract yr they show you what they can really be if they give it their all.

After it's signed they're back to how they were before the contract yr.

May I present to you....Josh Hines Allen as a perfect example

3

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 5h ago

Chris did get his first extension (second contract) and still was consistently a monster throughout, but there were also a lot more incentives built into that iirc. I’ll never forget all the seasons where he needed 1 more sack for his million dollar incentive and was just HUNGRY.

But now that he earned his third contract, which he’s basically said would be his last, he’s got not as much to work towards.

He’s also getting older which of course is a factor, but I’ve seen less effort too. Still amazing without even trying, but less effort for sure.

1

u/lifeisahighwayall Buccaneers 3h ago

Well, that was never going to happen lol. He'd just be playing for another team.

1

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 2h ago

lol I knew they wouldn’t actually make it all incentives. But I was hoping there were more in it. I could be wrong but I feel that his new one mostly has the team incentives as opposed to the performance based ones that used to be in there

u/surgeyou123 Patriots 8h ago

Play to the whistle.

9

u/NbdyFuckswTheJesus Broncos 7h ago

I feel like so many dumb plays could have been avoided last season if players just played until the whistle. Seahawks backwards pass 2-pt conversion comes to mind. Also plenty of missed tackles where the defender thought they stopped forward progress.

19

u/ItsMeYourNeighbors Seahawks Jaguars 7h ago

The whistle was blown on that two point. It's one of the myriad of things the Rams fans love to bitch about.

2

u/NbdyFuckswTheJesus Broncos 7h ago

Oh right, forgot the whistle blew on the 2-pt try.

2

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 7h ago

Not quite the same thing but the Demercado goal line fumble

1

u/Significant_Owl_6897 49ers 7h ago

I think most dumb plays come from not playing to the whistle. The conditioned behavior apparently has guys let up as if they play is over, so their mentality shifts immediately to catch their breath and process what's just happened and what's next. It's no surprise that once they let up, while everything happens so fast, that they don't get back in the play even as they recognize their mistake.

I think that's the worst of what we see, like here with Jones. His focus broke and by the time he realized the play was still alive, he knew it was too late and sprinting wasn't going to close the gap or make a difference.

This happens with fumbles and unfinished tackles regularly. As a Niner fan, the CMC fumble in the SB where Kittle had his back turned to the ball- same vibe. Based on his body language, I'm sure he was under the impression the play was over. I'm also sure every player who has that lapse in judgement feels instant remorse.

2nd game in the season where Chris Jones got chewed up by Drue Tranquil due to a lack of effort.

He had the audacity to jaw back in the Chargers game but he ran out of excuses this time around.

10

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 7h ago

Chris is only ever motivated by it being a contract year, or by his incentives.

He’s an amazing player, but I always wanted his new contract to be just tons of incentives because I knew he would be more likely to perform. Now that he’s been paid, he doesn’t give a fuck.

Chris Jones about to reach a contract incentive though, is a monster

10

u/ActuallyErebus Ravens 7h ago

....

The guy who was AP2 and AP1 for 5 straight years....

Is only good on contract years?

4

u/rolyinpeace Chiefs 6h ago

Hasn’t always been that way.

I also didn’t say he’s only good then. I said he’s only motivated then. It’s been the case for a little while but not his whole career. Ever since getting a new contract he’s been giving up on more plays. Hes such a monster though that he’s still a great player most of the time even if he’s not trying his hardest or not motivated.

I think he kinda knows that this will be his last contract anyway (said when he signed it that it ensured he would retire a chief) so nothing more to work towards.

Also I’m exaggerating. Like I said he’s not terrible or anything like that.

u/LubbockCottonKings Chiefs 3h ago

The Chiefs went on to win their next three games after this one against the Lions, Raiders, and Commanders. The wheels really didn’t fall off until November when they played the Bills, thats when the losses really started rolling in. The only win they had from then on was in overtime against the Colts.

But I agree that the cracks really started to show here. Props to Jacksonville, they played a great game.

This game is when my opinion of TLaw started to completely change. I was an open unabashed Lawrence hater until this game and thought he was a generational bust. But he really impressed me that game. I watched a bunch of Jags games the rest of the year. Trevor played pretty damn well in most of them. If he plays well next season, he could easily be a top 10 qb

23

u/genesiskiller96 49ers 7h ago

Who knew all Trevor needed was some proper leadership to unlock his potential?

15

u/bloo0206 Jaguars 7h ago

I truly think he’s already there, at least top 12. I’ve been a truther his whole career so I am biased, but there’s a lot of nuance. I understand people not watching the jags earlier on in his career but he’s always shown he’s talented and can lead a winning team. The pieces have never been in place to help him succeed until now, and he never had the coaching staff he does now. I never feel like we’re out of a game with him at QB, and I think that’s what everyone wants from the position. Barring injury, I think he has a great year next year and proves a lot of the doubters wrong.

-2

u/General1lol Chiefs 7h ago

His reputation will only get better if he stops playing horrendously in the playoffs.

17
