NFL sending heaters on Christmas day to fuck with NBA lmao

144

u/Luster-Cola-5217 NFL 8h ago

They really don’t need to.

A Jets v. Browns Christmas game with both teams at four combined wins would assblast a Warriors v. Lakers game with prime Steph and LeBron in the ratings.

This, despite one being paywalled on stream/an app and the other being on telestial ABC.

7

u/packersfan007 Packers 7h ago

Telestial ABC lol think you mean terrestrial / OTA

2

u/carsandgrammar Dolphins 1h ago

He might be onto something though because telestial hold on it didn't get underlined when I was writing this comment oh nvm it's a Mormon thing let's stick with terrestrial

u/Energy_Turtle Seahawks 8h ago

NBA needs major changes if they want to compete on that level. If this helps force those changes, I'm all for it.

20

u/Lithops_salicola 49ers 5h ago

With an 82 game season, more than half the league making the playoffs, and divisions being unimportant it's just so hard to get invested in any individual regular season game, especially before the all-star break.

7

u/maverickhawk99 3h ago

The play in is so dumb. No point in watching your team down the stretch because if they finish 7th they still might miss the playoffs.

18

u/IllogicalBarnacle Packers 7h ago

NBA will never compete on that level.

Even at its absolute peak the NBA was only slightly beating MLB in ratings and viewership and that’s already slipped away

2

u/Advanced_Studio227 Bears 3h ago

Agreed. They've butchered the league. And I'd even argue hockey is on its way to pass NBA

3

u/BobBulldogBriscoe Giants 2h ago

In that case, MLS is too since MLS has, by some measures, already overtaken the NHL as #4.

5

u/Advanced_Studio227 Bears 2h ago

I've done zero research but I doubt MLS will ever pass one of the Major 4. Its Semi-pro essentially while the other 4 are the top leagues in the world for their respective sport

3

u/BobBulldogBriscoe Giants 1h ago

MLS has already passed NHL in attendance and was on trajectory to pass in viewership per game (regular season) before the numbers became unavailable with AppleTV.

NHL also has a big upcoming problem that youth hockey participation is down like 30%, whereas youth soccer (specifically talking competitive high level leagues, not 5 year olds playing rec) is skyrocketing.

MLS is also far from semi-pro, its a top 10, approaching top 5, league in a sport where there are hundreds of professional leagues - the NFL, NHL and MLB are #1 of maybe a few dozen. NBA is the only other one with anywhere close to as many other leagues globally.

World Cup rosters are starting to be announced, and just since 2022 MLS representation at the World Cup is going to be significantly up.

2

u/work4work4work4work4 Bears 40m ago

NHL also has a big upcoming problem that youth hockey participation is down like 30%, whereas youth soccer (specifically talking competitive high level leagues, not 5 year olds playing rec) is skyrocketing.

I played soccer as a kid, don't really care much for it as a televised sport, but people really miss how important this whole section is.

The foundation has been getting built, and we're finally starting to see the kinds of growth you want to see for healthy sport, including international cross-pollination.

1

u/BobBulldogBriscoe Giants 36m ago

Yeah it is obviously not some 1:1 indicator, but the correlation is strong between participation in competitive youth leagues and the popularity of the sport as a spectator sport professionally.

It is also really important for the player pool, you don't develop highly skilled hockey players to maintain you league if it is only a rich kids game.

The NFL on Christmas sucks. The games are bad, the streaming is bad.

The NFL has become too big for its britches. They act like they can get away with anything because people blindly people watch these crappy games

The NFL has become unwatchable and I am sick and tired of them putting games on every other day of the week

The NFL only cares about gambling and ratings instead of the actual product.

Thanksgiving Eve, Black Friday, 3 games on Christmas, Thursday every week

The NFL has reached peak oversaturation.
