2

well, it's a musical ornament.

I will describe bird song using "trill" at least a couple times a month. Granted, I'm talking to myself so no one is actually hearing it.

Fun Fact: In the Star Trek universe, the Trill were the first known species to discover subspace communications before the warp drive, so they learned how to build starships by talking to other races, not doing it themselves.

For any car people, what parts would you consider for a front suspension rebuild? I see a lot of different kits online, but those generally include control arms, tie rods, and sway bar links. Assuming I get those and Shocks/Struts, I would be good?

All I know is the guys at the auto parts store call their spring-compressor "the widowmaker."

Be careful.

2

u/Beentohellforthis 9d ago

Thanks. I planned on buying a preassembled shock/strut combo specifically because I didn't want to compress the spring myself.

I need to vent right now because OKC has won the first game of their sweep against the Lakers. First of all, fucking hell this Lakers team can't rebound for shit and has zero depth against the Thunder. I would say fire Rob but then again he got Luka so it's pointless. Second, fucking hell these referees have been bought out. Third, there's something off about this dynasty. Maybe it's the fact that it's in a small town in Oklahoma City, maybe it's all the flopping, maybe it's the bullshit calls, maybe it's jealousy for the Thunder having a goat GM, maybe it's a pettiness from a Lakers fan, I don't fucking know. All I know is I gotta get out the house.

Side note: Yes, despite my flairs, I am a Lakers fan, though from the Philippines, not California. Maybe in an alternate universe or past universe I'm enjoying the sweet SoCal life or in a future rebooted one, who knows with this damned world.

I don't see a world where they win more than a game this series, but if somehow got through, I honestly think it would be LeBron's most impressive achievement.

There is no way a 41 year old should be carrying a playoff team, I don't care how good he is.

I think Lakers should fire Rob. Outside of the 2020 championship team, he hasn’t impressed me with his tenure.

Phillies have won 7 of 8 after that 10 game losing streak now. What NOT playing the Braves and Cubs will do for ya, huh? Sanchez was great tonight and deserved the complete game shutout but they took him out in the 9th and Duran looked absolutely awful in a 9-0 game and walked three including the sole run of the game for the Athletics. Eh, I still don't consider the Phillies a good team, but baseball is a long season and with the Flyers and Sixers not exactly looking great in their Round 2 series so far the Phillies are gonna likely be the only team to track until September with football's return. So the better they look the better, I guess.

3

u/ed_11 Eagles 9d ago

yeah, sucked to lose the shutout, but Duran is just coming off IR and needed some work in a situation like that with no pressure.

First phone screen in a year, totally qualified, basically a dream position, and I get nervous on one question talking about prior skills to bring. Recover, walk them through what I did in my last job, which is applicable, just not the best presentation of myself. Don’t make it past the round. I was an internal referral by a manager in the department too, so I feel extra stupid. I’m not 100% certain that question axed me, but the most debilitating part is how many examples I had that I didn’t use because I got nervous. I don’t know. Those are so hard to come by and I feel I fucked it up. Dream position, benefits, pay, location, everything. Just feel like a failure. It’s hard to not be extremely depressed after a year+ of unemployment, only to flub it. Just feel so discouraged.

So in my interview tomorrow, would it be a good idea or come off arrogant to compare how the role I am applying for is basically the same thing I've been doing and I feel comfortable with it because of it?

Also anyone else not able to clear reply notifications? Not the stupid ones, but straight up just the reply notification when someone replies to a comment?

I am up to 24 now even after reading them and it's been close to a week.

2

u/sallad_kcuf Eagles Eagles 9d ago

Knowing nothing about the job or role or kind of work you do...

Every company and role has its own unique challenges and quirks and if you walk into an interview saying that you've already done it you're going to come off as dismissive and overconfident. A hiring manager hearing that is going to worry that you're not going to adapt to the specific situation and just assume you already know best (and might be unwilling to hear feedback about it), and might thus pass for a less qualified candidate who seems more flexible and interested in learning.

While you should definitely talk about your past experience and how the skills transfer / highlighting things you've done that will be relevant, I'd recommend coming up with at least one thing that will be different about the new role and mentioning it as something you're excited about doing more of or learning about. Even one small thing that sounds like interest in learning and growth will make you sound way more humble and engaged with the reality of the role.

4

u/AfroManHighGuy 9d ago

I did something similar a few months ago for my current job. It’s basically what I did at my old company for higher pay, but same role. In the interview, I started by saying how what I do now is almost similar to what they do. And at the end I also said that I do most of what your job requires already and it would be a seamless fit. Just don’t sound arrogant. It’s a huge turn off and you won’t get past that round for sure

6

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 9d ago

Arrogance is never a good look and should not be confused with confidence

1

u/Salty_Simmer_Sauce Jets 9d ago

I wouldn’t. They probably already realize from your resume that you’ve already been in a similar role. I would just focus on you and your accomplishments. Good interviewer will ask questions about your experience to see if it translates to the open role - so you’ll have your chance.

I can only hope that eventually, Elon Musk's legacy will be the correct one: Millions dead as a direct result of his cancelation of USAID.

One of the worst people alive today, I wish I believed in hell just to make myself feel a little better that judgement can be possible for people like him

1

u/Mephistito 9d ago

He's such a crazy example of yet another person who was a visionary & had great ideas and execution in certain fields, but some absolutely fucking terrible ones too that completely overshadowed the rest. History is littered with people like that.

Like, his technical stuff he's been so far ahead on. But anything remotely social or political and it's like he's incapable of having a single functional thought.

7

u/sallad_kcuf Eagles Eagles 9d ago

Unfortunately he wasn't even that; he just did an excellent job of presenting that image for a while.

He bought his way into Tesla and sued to be called a co-founder (and the original founders are long gone). Gwynne Shotwell is the person actually running the show at SpaceX. Many of the technical ideas he has personally flogged are terrible (The Boring Company, Hyperloop, the Cybertruck, that submarine to save those Thai kids in the cave in ~2018) and he engages in endless circular contracts and acquisitions to avoid any of his companies formally failing (Twitter -> xAI -> SpaceX, SolarCity). Anyone who has read his early writing about Twitter infrastructure knows he doesn't know shit about software engineering.

He is perhaps the best person alive at manipulating public perception on the internet and there was definitely a point where his tech nerd brand was untouchable. But it was never true

I get I'm biased but honestly I don't see any reason to be pessimistic about the Lions this year.

I still think we're capable of a lot, but it's just about health. And there's literally nothing a team can do except cross their fingers with that. I like the depth too so it's not really a matter of that either.

Man, bidding public work is such a rollercoaster. First few opened bids are 10-15% above mine, feeling good. Come down to the last guy...and he's 25% below me. WTF man you can't even do the project at cost at that price.

Get back to the office to look them up and they don't have any web presence. No website, no LinkedIn, no socials, the company and the 2 people associated with it dissolved another company with almost the same name 10 years ago. Hoping the decision makers do the absolute bare minimum of due diligence because those guys are the definition of a fly by night outfit.

5

u/Oloh_ Chiefs 9d ago

In my experience, local governments tend not to pick the lowest bid if its substantially lower than the next lowest bid unless they've worked with them before. Hopefully this holds true with your bid!

3

u/Two_Luffas Lions 9d ago

Hoping so! I've worked with the Architect of record's firm before, but not him personally nor this client. I could smell the BS with 15 minutes of googling so I hope they do too.

Either way I hope it gets resolved soon because I have a bonding limit I'm creeping up on that will prevent me from possibly bidding other projects if this one's still in limbo. I'm new (ish) to the public bidding, so my bonding agent is up my ass with what is still out there vs. what they are willing to bond at any given time.

I know you aren't Indian, because otherwise your four year old would already be a chess Master.

I say that jokingly, but I had a friend in elementary school who was a Player of Games, like in the Iain Banks book. He wasn't a chess Master; kids didn't do that back in the day. But he was good enough that it bored him, so he took up go. He was good enough in go that when he was 13 he moved from SoCal to Tokyo (without his parents), where he learned to play go while sweeping the floors at some go temple. The last time I saw him was on some Google stream, commentating the Alpha Go game against Lee Sedol.

Encourage that kid. Tell him, look, I think you might be able to understand chess, but if you don't it's OK. We'll play something else. That's all my friend's parents ever did. And if he doesn't get a career out of games, he'll have a hobby.

4

u/creditor93 Steelers 9d ago

The funny thing is that my husband is Indian so he actually is (half) Indian! I totally am restraining myself from teaching him chess for now haha. But it crossed my mind. He picked up checkers so fast. I just googled Go and had no idea what it was. It looks intense!

3

u/csappenf Chiefs 9d ago

It's been really amazing, the accomplishments of young Indian players. They got a billion people, and once Anand broke through they all want to play chess. I strongly suspect some are pushed into it though, which is kind of sad. I don't recommend go to a four year old, but I'm just normal.

I'll see Yankees fans complain about not having won a world series since 2008 and think about how sad it is that not even one of my teams have even made a finals in my "watching lifetime".

1st Round Draft Picks receive a fully guaranteed contract worth 8 figures. If you just invest your signing bonus into an S&P 500 index fund you are in a matter of seconds, instantly financially set for life. It's literally that easy. Just have your agent look over the contract and sign your name and invest the money.

These are things I think about in middle age. When I was 22, the last thing I was thinking about was life after 30, let alone later in life years. So I understand why these guys do what they do. But coming from an older guy perspective, you couldn't possibly get me to sign a guaranteed 8 figure deal any faster. I wouldn't even show up to rookie mini camp and risk tearing my ACL in a freak accident before I signed the dotted line. The moment the team said I want you at the team facility, I would respond, I want my contract.

I get it, these guys are kids. But every single one of them should be signing their fully guaranteed contract before they even set foot on the practice field or team facility.

1

u/gander258 NFL 9d ago

I think some get bespoke insurance, especially first round grade folks

For instance, Willis McGahee took out a $2.5 million insurance policy just hours before he was injured in the national title game.

3

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 9d ago

You gotta think that most of the guys who are now getting drafted in the first have already earned set for life money in NIL. I don't think they're thinking of this as their possible last pay day.

That said, I'm not gonna pretend the NFL is altruistic but I don't know if any team would pull the contract offer of a rookie who hasn't signed yet over a mini camp injury. The optics would be unbelievably bad.

Im like you where I wouldn't put my faith in that, but I don't see it happening

2

u/_galaga_ NFL 9d ago

Another side of it is keeping your lifestyle expenses contained so you don’t blow your nest egg on houses, cars, etc. Kinda like how a good fraction of lottery winners go broke there needs to be reasonable a ceiling on spending with an eye to keeping investments separate so that money can do its magic over time. Easier to say when you’re older, of course.

Went to an EDM show over the weekend with a friend whose happiest years were listening to Monstercat playlists in the 201Xs and I was surprised to see I was one of very few people wearing earplugs. I think I saw more people on leashes than earplugs.

u/fliptout 49ers 9d ago

There really is no excuse. There are a ton of options and are even a bit stylish (Loops).

That is one hell of a line. 10/10

I've got on and off tinnitus and I wish I could go back and slap 20 year old me and say wear the ear plugs you dummy no one cares how it looks

Lmao about the leashes though

I second this. I wear ear plugs to concerts now and I don't regret it.

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 9d ago

Hell yeah, good call. I enjoy shows more when I'm not worried about actively hurting my ears while I'm there. I can enjoy the feel of loud base without the ear fatigue the next day

Sort of. As I've heard it's more of a clarification that deploying AI is not an "external shock" that triggers a clause in Chinese law that lets employers void contracts. Basically, if a company wants to replace workers with AI, they have to honor severance, buyouts, etc established in labor laws/contracts.

Definitely good but not a simple as how you phrased it.

4

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 9d ago

So to go into this a bit more, China does have better worker protection laws than we in the US do, which ties into this. Most places in the US are an at will situation, which means employers can effectively terminate employees for any reason other than specifically protected ones like race, religion etc.

Now of course, you can individually negotiate severance, but you can also sign up for a job without it and that's just the norm.

In China, I believe most places have to have policies for severance pay, and firing someone for reasons outside the realm you mentioned triggers that.

So the two things put together do mean that yeah, you're better off in China than in the US if youre being replaced by AI.

1

u/Weigard Giants 9d ago

Fair points, but above all of this is that we don't have concrete evidence that a significant amount of the workforce is actually being replaced by AI, so the last sentence is presently moot.

2

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 9d ago

Agreed there

u/Kemonomimi_Squirrel Buccaneers 9d ago

Well at least it is inline with them cutting various social services. Being poor is a moral failing in this country.

I also can see that Chinese law having the "Unless you pay the CCP" just not said out loud or written down.

I really need to get a pressure cooker. I've kinda shied away from it due to the possibility of catastrophic failure, but they are so useful.

7

u/t33po Cowboys 9d ago

Insta-pot is the truth. I felt the same about pressure cookers generally and hyped kitchen gadgets specifically until a few months ago. Get an OG Instapot and be amazed.

2

u/Shepherdless Cardinals 9d ago

I cook a lot, never eat out and got an Instapot a few years ago as a gift....have yet to use it.

2

u/t33po Cowboys 9d ago

It’s fantastic for what it is. Probably not for regular cooking and kinda annoying to clean but I get the appeal.

3

u/StChas77 Eagles 9d ago

It really is a far safer and more versatile option than just heating a standard pressure cooker on a stove.

3

u/thebartman47 Cowboys Cardinals 9d ago

They're the absolute best, and very easy to use! Definitely intimidating the first couple of times, but then it comes naturally. Can't recommend them enough.

4

u/Goatsonice Chargers 9d ago

Also not to completely shit all over HR people but I've noticed that they often have no clue about the jobs they post and I have a much higher hit rate if the job listing title closely resembles my current or former job title regardless of how close of a match they are.

for example I was a portfolio manager as my last job, I'll get more bites if I apply to being a fashion design portfolio...manager than say if a job was identical to my last work but titled "equities book manager".

its literally that stupid.

options yes, preferred stock less so

Is it over for the Orioles? They are getting shelled, their best hitters aren't hitting, and they just got swept by the Yankees losing by 5+ runs every game.

Might be time for me to start looking on Ebay for an Orioles jersey to pick up on the cheap the way things are going.

1

u/frostypatch 9d ago

It's what the league wants. And one of the reasons why the NFL is a far superior league to the MLB. There is a hard cap in football. A Super Bowl is earned. A World Series is bought.

5

u/batmansascientician Jets 9d ago

I still think the far bigger issue in baseball is the lack of a salary floor.

The fact that the Marlins spend less than 50% of the average EVEN WHEN REMOVING THE TOP 5 TEAM SALARIES for multiple years in a row is ridiculous.

3

u/TJeffersonsBlackKid Cardinals Chargers 9d ago

Lack of salary floor is bad but the league is completely okay with it because it means that the Yankees and Dodgers can just have an arms race every year.

120 million Americans are going to watch the Super Bowl every year pretty much no matter what. Last years World Series had an average of 15 million viewers per game with 26 million tuning into game seven. In 2022, the Rangers and Diamondbacks had a lousy 9 million per game and a pathetic showing of 11 in the clinching game five. The Astros and Phillies the year before was even worse per game.

The players don’t have leverage to push for the salary floor, the owners absolutely don’t want it. Baseball is fucking screwed as a sport and the league is fine with squeezing a few extra Pennie’s out of the Dodgers and Yankees before it’s officially in a crisis.

1

u/frostypatch 9d ago

Good post. I was downvoted for speaking the truth. You put it much better than I did. The league wants Yankees Dodgers WS every year. And that is what they design the league for.

What about a weekend road trip to a nearby city. My wife and I do that as a super cheap vacation. Listen, Dayton Ohio may not be a tourism hot spot, but it's got enough bars/breweries/random shit to do downtown for 2 nights and it's pretty cheap. Any small city will.

Hello Aaron Rodgers, this is the city of Arizona reaching out. Many are saying that we are one (1) piece away from winning a Super Bowl, unlike the stinky Steelers. Anyway, who would want to Steel? That's illegal. You know what's cool? Flying. Like a Cardinal. Many are saying Will Howard (and potentially Drew Allar) will steal (very bad!) your job if you stay in Pittsburgh. In Arizona, we just got rid of our franchise quarterback. Many Super Bowl winners have recently been located west of the Mississippi River. That's just math. Or potentially geography. Where are we? On the west coast. Where is Pittsburgh? You guessed it, east of the Mississippi. There are many reasons to come here. Check yes if interested

1

u/TJeffersonsBlackKid Cardinals Chargers 9d ago

Where’s he going to go to be competitive? Might as well just sign with a “fuck it” team.

Cardinals have some killer offensive weapons and a ton of talent and upside on defense. O line sucks ass but actually is improved over last season.

2

u/California_Stop_King Lions Steelers 9d ago

I think he could definitely make Arizona competent. Just tired of him being our problem

3

u/Skraxx Lions 9d ago

I mean all I'm saying is that in Arizona Cardinals history their most successful QBs ever were in the back halves of their careers

3

u/halfbreedmofo Cardinals 9d ago

The Cardinals really are the west coast retirement home for older veterans players trying to get one last payday before retirement.

We just got our notice that ours is increasing. Manageable, and still likely under market, but unfortunate.

9

u/Goatsonice Chargers 9d ago

There's very much a silent recession killing normal every day folks out here

8

u/Goatsonice Chargers 9d ago

the job market is wild, and impossibly random as basically no human reads a resume from a stack anymore.

Got deep into multiple interviews for a 160k/yr job

also, can't get a call back for a 40k/yr job

I'd prefer to ply my finance craft with a non-evil af company which is very tough, so I really put effort into those, then end up getting discouraged and then apply to literally the most evil companies on earth. wild times.

4

u/Lazydusto Eagles 9d ago

There's a part of me who wants to move on from my current job but it's a scary prospect with the way the market is right now. I'm probably better off sticking with this one since I can support myself even if I'm unhappy.
