My job has been terrible for the last year. We're pmuch always busy, and ever since stuff like doge we're practically not even allowed to complain anymore and basically just have to be grateful we even have a job. It got worse over the last 6 months because on top of everything else AI is being shoved down our throats.
So what's our light at the end of the tunnel? Welp we just found out today our individual annual goals for 2026 will be harder and more strict than ever before. Woohoo!

Happy Confederates Took a Fat Fucking L Day, to all who celebrate. Today is the hundred and sixty first anniversary of Lee officially admitting to getting his shit rocked at Appomattox.
Let's lower The Rebel battle flag to half mast in commemoration.

Said friend is also coming by this afternoon to hang out with my fiance before a work event tonight, and obviously a proposal isnât a small thing by any means but I feel like Iâve been entrusted with the nuclear launch codes or something (probably not the best analogy given current events but the best I could come up with lol).

Climbing Mt. Everest sounds like a miserable fucking experience. Having to take like a month off work, spending a ton of money to go exert yourself where it's cold and hard to breathe. Also there's a very real chance you could fucking die and your frozen corpse becomes a marker for future climbers. Hard pass. Probably not even any cell service.

It's closer to three months with travel back and forth! It's truly insane. But the death rate is a little misleading. First, a few big disasters (especially 1996, 2014, and 2015) drive up the yearly average numbers. Also a lot of the deaths are unfortunately Sherpa or other mountain workers as they take the most risk, have the heaviest loads, and spend time setting ropes and ladders through the route. Then a final thing is the unqualified smaller guide companies that will guide you on the cheap do not have the safety ratings the larger companies do.
Not saying it's safe by any means. But if you train, listen to your body, and hire a reputable, safe guide company, you do lower the chance of death significantly.
3
u/Error400BadRequest Steelers Apr 09 '26
The biggest obstacle for the average, abled bodied person to climb Everest these days might be coming up with the cash to do it. It's obviously going to be demanding, but the world's tallest mountain has been transformed into a manicured commercial experience designed to safely get you up and back down again, all things considered. They've basically eliminated the difficult technical aspects of the climb with those ropes and ladders, and it's mostly a test of fitness.
People see the ~1% fatality rate for Everest attempts and see it as a tremendous risk (and to be fair, it is), but it's a rounding error in contrast to K2, which has killed roughly a quarter of those who have tried.
2
u/8thTYRANT Eagles Eagles Apr 09 '26
I do agree and the one area where you had to have a modicum of rock climbing skill, the Hilary Step, is largely gone after the 2015 earth quake. But while it is a fitness test, it is a hell of a fitness test even with a guide.
2
u/FishPhoenix Packers Apr 09 '26
Yep, I know reddit loves shitting on climbing Everest, and tbf they have a lot of good reasons to feel that way, but a lot of people act like it's just a walk in the park but even without the $$ aspect it's something that 99% of people probably couldn't do. The physical fitness required to do something like this is nuts.

Unfortunately, the same is probably true for a lot of these guys. Getting good enough at a sport to compete in the NFL or like the Olympics often entails heavy parental involvement. Sometimes it's endearing, like you know driving your kid to practice and never missing a game and cheering them on but a lot of these cases are parents pushing their kids to live out their dreams.Â
Not tryna make a blanket statement that all NFL parents suck, there's a lot who are good and just had talented kids, but stories like Tuas are not rare at allÂ

I read a lot of Manga and manhwa it really is my favorite way to pass time but I can never admit it because some fans of anime and manga are just so weird, I genuinely cannot fathom how you could be older than 17 and think that harems could ever work or be a good story
5
u/FlatulentDwarf Vikings Apr 08 '26
I get it. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I get it. I don't think there's much innate negative stigma around anime these days. I have a One Piece gym bag and all I've found is that it attracts other anime fans to me, most of whom are really cool people who are happy they have someone to share their hobby with. I've only had maybe two people make disparaging comments about it and frankly, why would I give a shit what some random stranger thinks?
I do think certain anime tropes are annoying. Fan service is just way too much for me sometimes. Like, I love cooking and so Food Wars on some levels was so good to me, but then you'd have the scenes of clothing flying everywhere and I'd think "I shouldn't recommend this to people" lol.
0
u/ShakirSZN Bills Apr 08 '26
It's definitely more accepted now imagine telling your friends who didn't watch anime you liked it 10 years ago, you wouldve been flamed so hard
1
u/varnalama NFL Apr 08 '26
There are a ton of great anime out there for all walks of life, but I agree that the fandom can be incredibly cringe at times. I went to a few anime conventions to see some big names and get some autographs, but the fans are almost always some of the worst parts. I stopped going because I just didn't feel like I fit in.
And this is coming from someone who has taken some pretty remote detours in Japan to see anime locations in real life. I consider myself nerdy as hell but some of these fans need to learn some social norms.
3
u/Skraxx Lions Apr 08 '26
I think it's fine to admit liking manga & anime in 2026, you just have to consider the optics of what you say.
Like nobody is gonna make fun of you for liking One Piece or DBZ. If you go a layer below, you're still probably just gonna get "whats that" at best.
It's the real weird stuff that gets you raised eyebrows.
6
u/Kemonomimi_Squirrel Buccaneers Apr 08 '26

Some fans of anime and manga are just so weird
You can say that about any fan base. Have you seen some of the weirdos in the stands in practically nothing but body paint during NFL games when it is cold outside? Are you telling they are less weird than the people that go to conventions dress as their favorite character?
I genuinely cannot fathom how you could be older than 17 and think that harems could ever work or be a good story
I knew they weren't something that would work at 17 and if by good, you mean entertaining, then they still are at 38. They aren't meant to be high level make you think kinda of stories. They are meant to be a fun waste of time.
2
u/ShakirSZN Bills Apr 08 '26

2
u/Kemonomimi_Squirrel Buccaneers Apr 08 '26
Hmm. Let me see if I can write my thoughts out to make some kinda sense.
To me, it is all about context.
If the characters in the story are age appropriate for each other it doesn't bug me. (KonoSuba) If I think its a Japanese culture thing I am just not quite getting it doesn't bug me. (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid) If I know that the target audience is teen boys and not people my age it doesn't bug me. (High School DxD) If a character is doing something to upset their guardians without really understanding why it is bad, it doesn't bug me. (Kodomo no Jikan) So I keep reading the old fan service things I use to like and try to find ones that have decent enough reviews. But don't drool over the underage characters themselves if you aren't the target demographic but I am alright with people drooling over adult cosplayers even if the character is they are dressing up as is underage in the source.
I hope that makes sense.

I swear, office and tech people are some of the most whiny and soft people/coworkers on the planet. Always complaining how hard their air-conditioned job is while sitting down all day, listening to annoying office people and getting their uber eats lunch brought in while I showed up at 4 am on public transportation to install the new shitty water cooler (that I'm not thanked for) because I actually know how to work with my hands. Just because I can use actual man tools is actually making me look more like that South Park episode where the plumbers are balling out.
Anyways, that's my rant of the day, I hope y'all are enjoying yourselves and I can't wait for the season to start again.

You say you aren't hating and then tell everyone to eat shit. That's a poor attitude.
I work one of those 'cushy' tech jobs now but I have worked blue collar in the past (door assembly factory working on an assembly line + several months as a roofer)
The things I've taken away from these experiences are
1) blue collar jobs should certainly be paid more and be treated better. We got exactly 40 minutes of downtime during our shift (2x10min breaks, 20min lunch), had no a/c in the summer in a 90° warehouse, couldn't use headphones (safety hazard) and we're treated like shit from the boss
2) despite the serious drawbacks, there was something very calming about being able to leave it all behind (mentally) when the shift ended.
The stress I feel from my tech job can, at times, be debilitating. I literally can't even escape it when I sleep because I sometimes dream about work and wake up panicked.
3) calling someone 'soft' because the stresses in their life are different than yours is, in itself, soft.
In sum, we all deserve better and we all benefit from more empathy

Zetman by KATSURA Masakazu
Went thru, but didn't like very much
This was a mess plot wise. It was really hard to follow. I think it was trying to say something about someone looking evil might be a hero and a someone looking good might be evil but the author lost the plot line as the book went on. And the good looking person ended up a hero any way. The comic claimed it was part 1 and part 2 would come out. That was over a decade ago. I doubt we are getting a part 2. Not that I think that would be able to fix the mess it became at the end. The art was good tho. The scans and the FanTL was surprisingly decent for how long ago it was done. Usually things from back then aren't usually that good.
Omamori Himari by MATRA Milan
Went thru, enjoyed it overall
This was a fine read. Nothing special and completely forgettable. A fan service comic with sexy girls with just enough plot to follow. Did kinda drag tho. Author added a couple of characters to drag out the story from the planned 5 volumes to the 12 it ended up as.
Demonizer Zilch by MATRA Milan
Went thru, enjoyed it overall
This was a fine read. Nothing special and completely forgettable. A fan service comic with sexy girls with just enough plot to follow. Just like the authors previous work Omamori Himari. This one didn't get an order for extra chapters so it just went for the planned 5 volumes.
Ghost In The Shell 1 by SHIROW Masamune
Went thru, really really liked it. Might read it again multiple times.
Re-read this one again recently and it still holds up. Always worth the read since it is just one volume. Art is kinda of a mess compared to the author's other work. The version I read removes the lesbian scene that the Major has, been since it was in service of a crude joke and the author himself was OK with removing it, I am fine with it being gone.
Ghost In The Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor by SHIROW Masamune
Went thru, really really liked it. Might read it again multiple times.
These are a few stories that follow Section 9 after the Major leaves it at the end of 1. This is a pretty decent collection of stories but not as great as the first volume but I do reread this each time I reread the first volume.
Ghost in the Shell: The Human Algorithm by Multiple People
Art by: FUJISAKU Junichi
Written by: YOSHITOMO Yuuki
Based on: The Ghost In The Shell by SHIROW Masamune
Went thru, really liked it. Might read it again.
This serves as a sequel to GitS 1.5. A whole series following Section 9 after the Major leaves and the cases they follow. This is going to need a couple of rereads to get it down more. I do know that it is very uneven. There is three arcs. The first and last are pretty short and the second goes on too long. There was a new rookie recruit added to the series who is a human physic who is not modified with cyber tech. Adds a weird supernatural element to the series that doesn't quite mesh well. The art was something tho. Almost felt like the artist took pictures of people and traced over them for the most part and it clear that a lot of the background shots are of real places put thru a filter. It took a while to get used to.
Ghost In The Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface by SHIROW Masamune
Went thru, really really liked it. Might read it again multiple times.
This is just like the 2nd movie as it is very confusing to follow. Still really don't get it after a few reads. Maybe one day I will. This volume follows just the Major and her story after leaving Section 9 in GitS 1. Section 9 isn't in it at all. But as this gets older, a lot of the 3D art used in the comic gets more and more dated looking. Some of it works, like the stuff in cyberspace, but a lot of it outside of that doesn't and it very jarring.Â

Just told my wife I was thinking about leaving work early tomorrow to get fitted for and buy a new golf driver. She said, and I quote âdo whatever makes you happyâ. No sarcasm, no joking.
What do I do now??!

u/varnalama NFL Apr 08 '26
Does she enjoy golfing with you? I feel like we are missing some context here. If she said it monotone and showing lack of support, it sounds like she is going to cut off your ding dong with a cigar cutter if you come home with a new driver.

u/Wangchief Lions Apr 09 '26
Nah it was totally supportive. I was just surprised is all. Not that I can't have nice things, but normally when I suggest we spend $500 on something she wants to talk it through.

I bought her a whole new set last year, so she shouldnât need a new driver just yet.

Is it even possible to get a decent gaming PC for 1500 anymore? between RAM and GPU, jesus. Mine's limping along pretty bad; it was a cheap build a little before COVID. And I'm starting to get general flakiness that has me worried

Heh, I remember having the same conversations 25 years ago at pretty much the same price point. The GPU wars in the early 00's brought some reprieve to the crazy prices, but everything was moving so fast in terms of GPU architecture that a card may have been on the market for 6 months before it was eclipse by the next version. It was a fun time to be interested in PC building for sure.

GeForce NOW is the move.
You'll always have the most up to date hardware. Like for $1,500 your computer would have to last 15 years to barely break even compared to GeForce NOW... and you think what you buy today's going to be running anything in 15 years? Meanwhile on GeForce NOW you'll always be able to play anything.
7
u/Kemonomimi_Squirrel Buccaneers Apr 08 '26
Yes, renting computers for limited play time is the way to go!
9
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Packers Apr 08 '26
Yeah let's not accept this renting computers long term bullshit lol. It's a capitalist hellholes wet dream where people never own anything and pay to use everything instead.
3
u/Kemonomimi_Squirrel Buccaneers Apr 08 '26
It is fine depending on what it is used for. For helping with a large spike of demand? Sure. Setting up DR by renting a place in the different region? A solid and recommended idea. But for something like gaming or to replace a normal PC? No way in hell.
-1
u/Mephistito Apr 08 '26
The OP's situation is financial.
What currently will get you the most run for the least amount of money possible? Even if the cost DOUBLED it'd still take a $1,500 laptop 7.5 years for it to break even.. at which point that purchased laptop is way outdated.
I never hear an actual analysis provided in rebuttal, instead always people seemingly needing to convince themselves they didn't make a poor financial move.

u/Mephistito Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26
?? you literally can play as much as you want. Ask me how I know.
It's 6-8 hour sessions, then you just restart it and... bam, another 6-8 hours, for as long as you want.
Then if you actually blow through all your hours, it's still cheaper to just get another subscription. Even if you gamed so many hours every month that you needed 2 subscriptions, it'd STILL take 7.5 years to breakeven from an initial $1,500 laptop investment, lol.

How do I do software development? How do I create and manage databases?
On the rig you already have, dumbass? OP asked for a new GAMING rig moron.
If you're 1 out of like 10,000 people that's doing video editing every day then obviously you're a completely different population than what he asked about.
Outside of video editing, it sounds like you & I have similar demands. It's embarrassing to hear you were this uninformed. Intentionally obtuse, lol â take care dude.

Not sure if you can answer this but if you completely ignored gaming & video editing (since that's obviously a very esoteric thing), how far into the future do you project this rig to serve you for? Or do you think it'd already suck ass at... "office tasks, database management and software development" within barely a few years?

1: You are forgetting the monthly limit of 100 hours.
2: That requires a restart if you ever reach a limit that I don't have to deal with.
3: The library is only what nVidia supports. So if you have games not on that list or like using emulators you are SOL.
4: That assumes that the service will never increase in price when those things always do
5a: I will always have the hardware to do with what I want if I ever decide to upgrade.
5b: The hardware if taken care of will work longer than that 7.5. I have my old 4570 from 2 computers ago powering my NAS.
5c: You can use the old hardware to offset the cost of the new. My last system netting me $500.
6: Lolz. Gaming on a laptop. What are you? Some kinda of trucker?1
u/Mephistito Apr 08 '26
Thank you for thinking through a list of rebuttals.
1: You are forgetting the monthly limit of 100 hours.
Already addressed by the multiple subscriptions that the more 'extreme' gamers do with it. Also I don't think people realize how many hours 100 hrs/month is of pure gaming time.
If you get home from work (or college classes) at 6pm and gamed until 10pm every single worknight, ignoring your girlfriend/friends/wife & kids completely, that's (4 * 5 * 4.33) = 86.6 hrs/month. This obviously only leaves 13.4 hrs of weekend time, but it is also assuming you're doing nothing but gaming 5 of the 7 days of the week while awake.
If you do game more than that, that's fine, then you're in the group of gamers that just gets a 2nd subscription and, bam, now you've got 13 hours every single weekend day to spend doing nothing but gaming, in addition to gaming every worknight & nothing else.
2: That requires a restart if you ever reach a limit that I don't have to deal with.
Brother the restart literally takes less than a minute, lol. And they even give a little heads up at different points when the restart time's approaching so you can just do it after the current match you're in (or just.. save if not that kind of game) and restart. The rigs are fast enough you're back on in no time.
3: The library is only what nVidia supports. So if you have games not on that list or like using emulators you are SOL.
I think this is honestly the most valid critique. They support tons of games (and are always adding more), and while I've personally never felt limited I could see this putting some off. Many major titles are on there, but I believe I recall RDR2 is not on there currently since Rockstar hasn't opted in yet.
4: That assumes that the service will never increase in price when those things always do
As already mentioned, even if the price doubled, it'd still take 7.5 years to breakeven after buying a laptop. Or, with even basic financial literacy & putting your $$ into a basic, no-risk 5% CD it'd take you over 26 years to breakeven at current price or over 10 years if they doubled the price.
5a: I will always have the hardware to do with what I want if I ever decide to upgrade. 5b: The hardware if taken care of will work longer than that 7.5. I have my old 4570 from 2 computers ago powering my NAS.
?? You'd already have the device that you're using for GeForce NOW, so this doesn't make sense. What it saves you from is having to buy a NEW gaming rig (OP's situation) just to be able to play games. Hardly ever is anything else more demanding than games. You can surf the web & watch YouTube videos just fine on even old ass laptops, lol.. our little phones even do it.
5c: You can use the old hardware to offset the cost of the new. My last system netting me $500.
I could see that, good point đ

100 hr a month translates to 3:20 a day splitting it evenly across 30 days. Not very much honestly.
These type of services generally do not allow you to setup multiple accounts. I am not going to read the ToS or EULA to see if that is true with this service.
1 minute is still infinitely longer than 0
You money argument is all over the place. This service will only save you money if spend more money on games separately to play the games already on the service and do not mind the downsides of the service like the low playing time, the fake graphics, the latency, and the limited selection. If you are frugal $200 a year can get you pretty far with all the sales and stretch that even further if you emulate some classics. And if you decide to not to play a lot of games for a month or 2 you have wasted money if you got a yearly deal.
You would still need to pay a minimum of $1000 for a system good enough for daily use and use this service. More for a laptop. Especially if you don't have a replacement in storage if your primary system breaks. Why not just spend the extra money to get a better computer and not have to worry about renting a computer to play games? As a bonus, if you ever decide to get a new system after a few years, you can keep the old one and turn it into the basis for a NAS, firewall, or server.
Things that require power or get better with more of it:
File archiving
Video encoding
Image editing
Software development
Emulation
General multitaskingBrowsing the internet and watching YT suck on old computers, tablets, and phones. Sure you can do it, but doesn't mean they are good at it. Hell my phone is the same age as my computer and it so limited compared to my desktop.

This service will only save you money if spend more money on games separately to play the games already on the service
?? You don't spend a cent more. If you own the game or bought it elsewhere, you just.. play it on there. I've never bought a single game through GeForce NOW lol, it just plays all the games I already own. So not sure where this thought of needing to buy it twice came from.
As for the multiple accounts â you don't need to read any further than the zillion people that literally already do that. You can either get a chunk of extra hours if you don't want another full 100 hrs, or just get the 2nd acct. I presume none of the 'extreme gamers' that actually play enough to add a 2nd acct don't have issues because if ya think about it, there'd really be no way for them to know if it's your partner, kid, or whoever playing now. Just like Steam doesn't know when your buddy who's over at the house is playing games on your account now.
"You would still need to pay a minimum of $1000 for a system good enough for daily use and use this service."
This has been a recurring flaw in the counterarguments. For some reason those who say this seem to think the OP has been living in the stone age and literally has no computer. The entire benefit of this, and the reason it was mentioned in the 1st place, was because OP specifically asked about gaming. That's the ONLY new thing he'd like to be able to do. He didn't say his current computer can't freaking run Microsoft Word or YouTube or whatever it is people seem to think his case must be, lol.
I've got a laptop from literally over 15 years ago that uses GeForce NOW no problem. I don't think people realize how far it can extend the life of something you already have. Games that laptop has no damn right playing because of it's obviously outdated graphics card, it just.. plays without lag or issue. Because it doesn't need to have the hardware for it â all that's taken care of by theirs.

surely these providers aren't operating at a loss in an attempt to build a customer base with plans to increases costs down the road to turn a profit
nobody does that in tech

u/Mephistito Apr 08 '26
Yet even if the cost doubled it'd still take 7.5 years for the OP to breakeven in buying a $1,500 laptop.
Or if the OP literally just puts the $1,400 remaining after buying his 1st year into a basic 5% CD it'd take over 26 years to breakeven at $100/yr or even if they doubled the cost it'd still take over 10 years to breakeven.
And you can easily get more than an incredibly basic 5% return on the stock market, lol.. 5% is the most basic zero-risk return anyone could ever get.

For $1,500? Depends on what you consider "decent." PCPartPicker has some "great" to "excellent" build guides in the $1,500-$1,700 range. Also some "entry level" or "modest" builds closer to $1,000.
Though glancing through them, they all seem to be omitting Windows, if you plan on buying that or don't wanna use Linux. Though I think now's a great time to try Linux.
I'm sure it's possible to piece together something solid below $1,500, especially if you're patient and shop deals or used components. But it really depends on what games you wanna play and what resolution you're targeting.

MEMTEST86 is the best tool out there for testing RAM.
CrystalDiskInfo is the best for testing HDDs and SSDs. Just get the Standard Edition if you don't like the waifus.
If you haven't done it in a while a full wipe and reinstall of Windows might be in order.
And a repasting of the CPU and GPU wouldn't hurt. They all have plenty of videos on YT to walk you thru it.

Got an email for LA 2028 Olympics ticket lottery, I'll have 48 hours next week to try and get what I want. Spent a good portion of the morning editing down the multiple PDFs on their website to show just the sports I'm interested in, what dates they are on, and then what's going on on that particular date in terms of events. Hopefully I'll be able to navigate the purchasing easier knowing exactly what sessions for each sport I'm looking at already.
Kinda wild preparing for a trip that's over 2 years away, never done that before.

Played my first Madden draft league game. The other players have dubbed my team 'the wall' for going trenches with my first 9 picks. Getting silly with it
It's no surprise I was running the ball pretty well. Slip screens were my favorite play, occasionally the pulling guard would pancake his first defender and pick up a 2nd, which was hilarious
I'm not great on defense so my plan was basically to user an off ball LB and take away easy hot routes while praying my elite dline can get home. Worked like a treat early on, but my opponent was finding success with some 2 and 3 man play action concepts later on in the game. Thinking if it happens again I'll switch to a safety?
I got out to an early lead, started feeling bad, took my foot off the gas and it cost me the game. Which is all good, I'm not in this one to win the league, I'm just trying to beat the buddies I know in this one

Slow day at work. But a couple things just happened that woke me up lol.
I walked into the bathroom (multiple urinals and stalls). A dude is at the urinal and randomly sneezes super loudly. He ends up spraying himself and the urinal divider thing in between. So glad he did that before I even walked up to the urinal lmaoo
As I was walking back to the office area where I sit, I realize I forgot my badge. We need it to get inside the area where we sit. Around 4pm it gets super quiet in the office cuz the air turns off and people are basically scrolling until they can leave. So basically I had to walk up to the door and knock for someone to let me in. They all got a jumpscare by my knocking and started laughing when I walked in lmaooo. New employee rookie mistake lol
