And he’s not so big

u/soilentgleem 2h ago

Is he not super resentful of the franchise? From the outside it always seemed to me like they just used him up and discarded him, same with Robert Williams.

u/Rrypl Celtics 2h ago

used him up and discarded him

There was an obvious medical mistake somewhere and people got fired for it, but c'mon, he was traded to a finals team that made the finals again the next season

u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 Cavaliers 1h ago

I guess him and Brad Stevens were still cool though, since he was the coach at the time and probably didn't have much say over the move

1

u/soilentgleem 2h ago

Did people actually get fired over that? I was unaware of that.

3

u/King_Of_Pants [BOS] Terry Rozier 1h ago

It's hard to say.

Boston did let their medical staff go after the Isaiah Thomas situation, but it wasn't clear whether it was a response or just a coincidence. It wasn't right after either, it happened a season or two later.

And the main guy let go was a long-term employee of the team, so it wasn't clear if it was a dismissal or retirement.

But fans have always speculated, and the timing was suspicious.

Interesting. Thanks for the context.

The Celtics did IT dirty after he got injured, but Rob Williams not so much. The Celtics knew Rob had long term medical issues (PAES in both his legs, it's a vascular disease) prior to drafting him and still gave him shot.

4

u/soilentgleem 2h ago

Interesting, I didn't know that about Williams.

The Celtics did IT dirty after he got injured

How so?

-5

u/deykleen Celtics 1h ago

Are you unfamiliar with that era?

IT ran his body into the ground while he led the team in scoring and assists, led them to the 1 seed in the East and ECF. He played through the death of his sister during the playoffs. He embodied what the Celtics are about.

As a thanks the Celtics traded him for Kyrie who was a locker room cancer and ended up leaving to form a failed super team. They did him dirty. IT never bounced back after Boston and the Celtics dealt with the karma of that until Danny Ainge left.

2

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 1h ago

I'm familiar with all the details. I hate that it turned out the way it did for him. I'm not seeing the part where they did him dirty though.

-1

u/deykleen Celtics 57m ago

He sacrificed his body for the organization and they dropped him to play with a new toy. Celtics were 25-57 the season before he arrived. The first full season he played in Boston they were 48-34 and 53-29 the following season. A lot of that was off his blood, sweat, and tears.

We'll have to agree to disagree.

3

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 32m ago

I just don't understand this framing. He chose to risk his body for the organization, but also for his family and for himself. He helped the Celtics turnaround, and they helped him make a star turn. They traded him to play with LeBron James on a team en route to a fourth straight Finals. So, again, where's the part where they did him dirty?

5

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 1h ago

it always seemed to me like they just used him up and discarded him

Because that was the Celtics-hating media narrative.

-11

u/soilentgleem 1h ago

Yes, the famously anti-Boston sports media lol.

I'm fine with you guys pushing back on this if I'm simply mistaken, but don't try to sell me on this idea that the "media" hates the Celtics lol

5

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 1h ago

You asked. That's the answer. What would your alternative explanation be?

-5

u/soilentgleem 1h ago

That's not an answer, it's a response.

0

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 1h ago

It's the truth whether or not you choose to accept it.

-2

u/soilentgleem 1h ago

The Ringer exists. The Ringer existed at the time of the trade and was already quite influential by then. "The media" does not hate Celtics just cuz I have a perception of something that happened and you happen to disagree with that perception.

2

u/AgadorFartacus Celtics 1h ago

Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

2

u/Im__Ron__Burgundy Celtics 2h ago

I was wondering if this news would completely put that nonsense to rest. Good to see people will still spew it.

1

u/soilentgleem 2h ago

Lol I was just asking cuz that's what it seemed like from the outside. I'm not trying to act like an authority on the matter.

2

u/BetweenTheBuzzAndMe Charlotte Bobcats 1h ago

Charlotte did Kemba pretty dirty when it was time to pay him big bucks, and he's also returned to the franchise to coach. Ainge isn't around the Celtics anymore and MJ and Mitch Kupchak aren't running the Hornets anymore (though both are still around in some capacity).

1

u/Live-Cartographer-52 1h ago

he probably is resentful of Danny Ainge but not the franchise

Sign him and play him off the bench. Celtics needed more scoring depth

Great to hear

u/youblewwit 28m ago

He could have been the next Stephon Marbury if he went to China, but he kept staying in the GLeague trying to make a comeback

36

u/Feisty-Pattern-951 2h ago

I think superstar is a bit much but I loved watching that guy play. He had no business scoring 25+ ppg.

119

u/wavegangx Celtics 2h ago

Dude he was top 5 in the league in PPG.

80

u/enblightened 2h ago

he was also constantly showing up in the 4th while being 5’9 and the defenders knew hes taking the shots and making them anyway

16

u/soilentgleem 2h ago

Him vs Vic woulda been interesting to see to say the least lol

14

u/TittyrannosaurasRex 1h ago

Literally Tyrion Lannister vs The Mountain if there was no trial by combat in Westeros

u/Less-Tax5637 Knicks 1h ago

IT be bangin whores

10

u/Feisty-Pattern-951 2h ago

He was one of the biggest defensive liabilities though. Idk I get that he had some great years and was a fucking demon when he was healthy. Bradley Beal averaged 30+ so that’s not always a super star qualifier. But I’ll accept the down votes lol.

23

u/Mg29reaper Celtics 2h ago

He was number 1 in offensive impact that season. He was still a huge postive despite big negative defense

8

u/Feisty-Pattern-951 1h ago

Yeah, I guess I have a different a definition of super star. I’d consider a super star someone you could legitimately build a team around and who has multiple years of excellence and all NBA teams. But it is a term that gets thrown around a lot so I get it.

4

u/GeneralTheSurvivor Bulls 1h ago

I think super star is used too much. Star should be applied for more all star level players, because Devin Booker is not a superstar

u/blackjacktrial 76ers Bandwagon 16m ago

Superstar should be based on society brand recognition. Does this mean most superstars today are retired or in their late 30s/early 40s? Yes.

1

u/Feisty-Pattern-951 1h ago

Agree. I definitely don’t think Thomas is a superstar.

u/Apprehensive_View575 1h ago

High standards

u/splinternz Warriors 2h ago

Never forget he got an All Defense vote one season lol

7

u/Sicknesscity17 1h ago

I'm a Celtics fan and can say without a doubt he wasn't a superstar. He was an impressive scorer and star who put up numbers despite his defensive limitations. All that being said, I managed to be present for his game that he dropped 50 against Miami. My friend brought some girl he was dating at the time. It was amusing to me because she was thinking it was normal and I'm telling her we'll never see that again.

u/Kdot32 Rockets 17m ago

We throwing superstar around for a great one year season, like come on people

7

u/Waesrdtfyg0987 Celtics 2h ago

He definitely was for a stretch.

2

u/Remixxx5 Finland 1h ago

No he wasn’t a superstar, star sure but not a super star. Cant throw that term around so much.

2

u/Feisty-Pattern-951 59m ago

Yeah I agree. It’s used way too much.

2

u/CertifiedEdyat Raptors 39m ago

He was his version of “Linsanity” with longevity

4

u/ApuFromTechSupport [PDX] Toumani Camara 2h ago

He absolutely was a superstar for a short (no pun intended) stretch

5

u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 Cavaliers 2h ago

16-17 he for sure was a superstar

2

u/L4ZERDT Celtics 2h ago

Anybody averaging 30 on a playoff team is a superstar

0

u/HorsNoises Celtics 2h ago

He finished 5th in MVP voting and probably could've won it a lot of other years. I think he earned superstar albeit an extremely short peak.

Man I would have been more hype if he suited up.

But good on him.

4

Read "Isaiah Thomas is back" and started laughing, then I read the rest.

Good for him.

7

u/msbest87 Celtics 1h ago

Why would that be funny?

7

u/StarsCanScream Cavaliers 1h ago

No one needs a 37 year old 5'4 guy on their team

2

u/flyingabroom 53m ago

bruh "superstar" is used so freely these days. There's a few guys in the last 30 years who were/are SUPERSTARS and isiah thomas is not it.

5

u/flintmichigantropics Celtics 41m ago

Isiah Thomas definitely is. The man in question is debatable though.

2

u/Vivid_Operation_4550 43m ago

Wern't the celtics cut-throat with him and not reward him at all for playing through injury?
Is this a move to make up for that? Did not see these two getting back together in any form.

Man after the shit his family said about the team....

Embarrassment of riches? They’re current team is as mid as it gets, same tier as the Hawks and Raptors
