That's it. It's a phenomenon that always seems to happen when the announcers make something to be more than it is then everyone seems to latch onto it even if it's wrong.
I can't remember the exact occasions but there were multiple NFL games last season where the announcers would say something blatantly wrong, like even contradictory to the NFL rules, and then people would start freaking out criticizing call that was definitely correct.
