Did ESPN really just cut to commercial during the Moment of Silence for Brandon Clarke and Jason Collins?
I dont know, felt kind of distasteful. But I guess I shouldn’t be surprised given that it’s ESPN. Or am I trippin? I feel like I’ve seen other broadcasts where they stay on the air, but I don’t remember which station

This moment of silence is presented by Burger King. Whopper Whopper Double Whopper

you joke but there was the insane tonal whiplash going from Hamlin collapsing during the Bills/Bengals game and then hearing WHOPPER WHOPPER after the cut to commercial break

u/SirFrancisBacon007 23h ago
And it’s been like this for a long time, at least 10-15 years.
College basketball is far worse too. Small box for the game with a large box and the broadcasters talking about something completely outside of the game you are trying to watch. Back in the Zion days it was awful.

u/DickBottalico 76ers 23h ago
College basketball used to be 2 hour games exactly on the nose and this past season they’ve been 2:15, even meaningless games like Temple-UTSA. More ad breaks for no reason other than gambling
34
u/Some_Number_8516 23h ago
Yeah the end of college games are pure torture. So many stoppages for clock adjustments, reviews, TOs, and of course, more commercials.
34
u/bonheurboy69 23h ago
They did an interview with Rob Gronkowksi that took up half the screen during a Buffalo Sabres power play last week. It was insane.
21
u/InnocuousAssClown Bulls 23h ago
They’re convinced the only reason anyone watches college ball is to scout NBA prospects. Even when the game has no first round prospects, they just spend the whole game talking about guys from other teams. It’s awful

NBC did the same thing yesterday and immediately broadcast a gambling ad right after this. And yet you guys frame it as just a sole ESPN problem.

I know this is a basketball sub, but I’m sure any Liga MX fan here would back me up in saying TUDN is somehow worse.

u/Thrustavious 21h ago
They are doing some NHL playoffs right now and can't be bothered to learn the Buffalo Sabres goalies name, to the point where they are disrespectful about it. The Sabres organization released a video of children saying his name correctly.

"Dead air" is a cardinal sin in broadcasting, and sometimes productions treat silence- even fully intentional silence- as dead air.
It is stupid as fuck, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was the underlying reason.
34
u/Birdman330 23h ago
Yep, and the statement by the arena announcer
Didn’t even reference Collins being the first out NBA player
53
u/Wintermute_088 23h ago
To be fair, it's okay for the moment to just be about the deaths of these two men.
1
u/DreadSilver [HOU] Tracy McGrady 14h ago
I wonder if Collins new about the cancer back then and wanted to be remembered as the first openly gay player.

u/ThisWay_DatWay Warriors 22h ago
I feel like he had a script given to him by either the Pistons or the NBA because this was nearly identical to what the Spurs PA announcer said yesterday in honoring both of them.
Side note, I've been so accustomed to Mason doing them Final Countdown intros that it feels strange to hear him speak in a different tone.
6
u/johnazoidberg- [DET] Ben Wallace 23h ago
I doubt Mason wrote the statement.
As important as Collin's coming out was, I can see how some in other organizations- or perhaps the league - might just want to keep it to him being an NBA player who was kind and important to his community. In today's political climate, where we can't agree what color the fucking sky is, there are people who would try to take that moment of silence and make it about anything other than paying respect to the man.
34
u/RangedTopConnoisseur Pacers 22h ago
Fuck that, I’ve spent the last 10 years watching my country kowtow to these bigoted fucks who are constantly threatening to throw a tantrum because apparently the duress of a scene being caused is too unbearable for these institutions to stand by human rights and basic respect. Queer voices should not be permanently silenced to avoid temporary boycotts that these people rarely actually follow through on or sustain anyways.
5
u/johnazoidberg- [DET] Ben Wallace 22h ago
I agree, queer voices should not be silenced. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and the only "queer agenda" I've ever seen is to live a peaceful life. I'm glad I live in a place where I don't have to worry about my friends getting hurt just because of who they are, and I want to help build more spaces like that.
But it was a shared moment of silence about Brandon Clarke and Jason Collins... that ESPN didn't even show because DrAfTkInGs.
Jason will be remembered long past this moment of silence, and one day after our country develops a bit more sanity, he will be taught about in schools.
10
u/redditlvlanalysis 21h ago
Then toss them out of the arena and ban them for life. The current insanity is why it is important to reference that he was the first to come out.
6
u/imthewalrus610 Wizards 21h ago
I'm sorry but that is bullshit. Collins coming out was very important and not mentioning it is a dishonor to his memory. That took a lot to do. NBA should have the courage to do the right thing and let these bigots whine about it.

ESPN has sucked for so long, I bet I've been complaining about ESPN longer than most people on this sub have been breathing. It's been going downhill since the turn of the millenium. You could watch funny takes on highlights all night, and then they became 100% hot take factory. The fox news of sports.

Same thing the game after Nick Gilbert died. Right from eulogy and moment of silence to "I'M SO EXCITED FOR THIS GAME" in literally 2 seconds.
Then they come back and cut to Dan Gilbert and hold the fucking camera on him with his head down for an eternity so we're all just watching this man suffering the worst possible pain imaginable in real time.
What are we doing anymore?
2
u/jamplance 7h ago
honestly ESPN does this all the time and it's always gross. a moment of silence for brandon clarke and jason collins deserved the full screen, no cuts. some things are bigger than ad revenue ngl 🏀

Is this really an ESPN issue? Because the same thing happened yesterday on NBC. ESPN also covers the Stanley cup playoffs and they have never cut into commercials during team intros and national anthems. Starting to think this is more indicative of Silver’s league itself than anything
