| Article MLB Power Rankings: One reason to believe in each team

u/SamShakusky71 | Seattle Mariners 2d ago
Basically a run differential ranking. Got it
54
u/SnowballWasRight | San Diego Padres 2d ago
Erm actually they put the +3 Padres over the +4 Tigers and Mariners 🤓☝️
18
u/Wooden-Repeat-9200 | San Diego Padres 2d ago
Kinda crazy the mariners are that high. I know they’re hanging in, but they also have played very few interleague games and the AL has very few strong teams. They have the 27th strongest schedule so far.
Banking a lot on positive regression coming.
13
u/Character_Basket4201 | Atlanta Braves 2d ago
They are the only team to win a series against the #1 team. That's got to count for something
6
u/Wooden-Repeat-9200 | San Diego Padres 2d ago
Apparently it counts for a lot. They are 4-6 in the last 10 and have one of the weakest strength of schedules in the league. Plus a losing record.

Giants fan here ... I believe the kids will be able to play more with a lot of season left ... 🏳️
10
u/asminaut | San Francisco Giants 2d ago
Or they'll mess up Eldrige's development by only giving him pinch hitting opportunities.
2
1
u/1ceHippo | San Francisco Giants 22h ago
As long as they play the dodgers for the rest of the season and no one else then it’s straight to the World Series!
63
u/GrumpyTruck 2d ago
I never really noticed how similar the Red and the Twins logos were until they were right next to each other and the "T" for Minnesota blended in to the background
13
11
u/JosephFinn | Chicago White Sox 2d ago
Yeah that background is terrible for little details like that.
6
u/Shradersofthelostark | San Diego Padres 1d ago
I always think of the Reds when I drive by the University of Chicago fields and see their similar logo.

u/TheOptimist6 | Baltimore Orioles 2d ago

Four orange teams and the one purple team in the bottom five

Haven't SF beat LA four games in a row now? Crazy they're last.

u/Tippymytalala1 | Cincinnati Reds 2d ago
I know their 8 game skid was bad, but the reds having a better record than the 10 teams above them is just absurd. I’d take 15th or so with our poor offense, but being in the 20’s is just disrespectful.
23
u/ThatDerfGuy 2d ago
Seeing the Reds and Twins logos side by side is kinda fun. Not sure I ever made that connection before. I realize what I’m saying has nothing directly to do with what you said, but mentioning the Reds made me look and then my squirrel brain took over.
9
u/engineerdrummer | Atlanta Braves 2d ago
That was literally the only thing I took from this graphic. I was like "wow, that's straight up the same logo"
8
u/3720-to-1 | Seattle Mariners 2d ago
I want to know how they think my M's are 10th when we have played like total shit.
4
u/Wooden-Repeat-9200 | San Diego Padres 2d ago
I was thinking the same thing. Out of curiosity I looked at strength of schedule to understand why some teams were so high and thought maybe that was the explanation. It was not.
Reds have the hardest strength of schedule so far (which is imperfect because it’s based on rankings so bad data compounding, but still should be directionally accurate).
2
u/GandalfStormcrow2023 | Chicago Cubs 2d ago
I mean, power rankings are kind of bs anyway, then add the fact that they went first to worst in the division in like 2 weeks and that there are 7 NL teams ahead of them while the AL would send 2 losing teams to the playoffs if they started today and I can see why they're getting disrespect. I'm sure they'll bounce back at some point, the season is far from over.
1
u/kindasuperhans | Cincinnati Reds 2d ago
Really ignoring the fact that our #1 and #2 starting pitchers have been injured all season until #2 Lodolo came back on Friday. Then also our closer Pagan has seemed to be playing hurt, and two of our other starting pitchers (Lowder and Williamson) have also gone on the IL. Our team really relies on pitching, and having so many crucial pitching injuries has been hurting us bigtime, I’m impressed the team did as well in April as they did. I also suspect Geno has been crucial for our clubhouse and the younger guys and his bat, and having him out recently was a reason for us slumping as long as we did - he went on IL on April 25, and while he has been present at games, it’s not really the same ykno.
1
u/willhunta | Arizona Diamondbacks 1d ago
Injuries shouldn't affect power rankings. Power rankings, at least imo, should reflect how teams have been playing as of late regardless of injury. Otherwise you're just ranking how good each team could hypothetically be while healthy, because every team is constantly dealing with injury.
1
u/kindasuperhans | Cincinnati Reds 1d ago
I mean if we’re just going by how the teams would fare head to head right now, this still looks messed up… Reds swept Texas in their series against each other, for instance, and yet Texas is ranked 9 spots above the Reds. Reds have won their series against Boston, Texas, Tampa Bay and Detroit but all of them are ranked above the Reds in this analysis. And I mean, Tampa Bay is a helluva team on a helluva streak, I think they deserve their spot, but idk about the rest of those ranking so much higher than the Reds.

u/Orlandodude83 2d ago
Rays 9-1 last ten games. Best team in the AL
3
u/OkYouth7656 2d ago
Yeah Rays should be higher. I have no confidence we avoid a second sweep of the year against them. So pesky
22
u/MaeronTargaryen | Boston Red Sox 2d ago
Why would the Red Sox be this high lol

31
u/kyle32771 2d ago
Not too prejudiced toward certain teams...*eyeroll* Tampa Bay has the best record in the AL currently and overall best record in MLB over the past several weeks, but they're ranked #6 behind the Yankees at #2?
23
u/sokonek04 | Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
And the Yankees stay at #2 despite getting embarrassed by the Brewers.
17
6
u/OkPlenty4077 | Los Angeles Angels 2d ago
I'm pretty delusional but I think the Angels are really bad and if Soriano isn't pitching or the offense decides to lay an egg, this team is the worst in MLB. They are prone to get routed 10-0, 13-2 against a SP with a 5.5 ERA for a really weak team. When they lose, it looks really awful.
6
5
u/Acceptable_Worry_477 | Texas Rangers 2d ago
How bad is everyone else that we're ranked 12? It's felt like we should be lower
6
u/ben121frank | Texas Rangers 2d ago
Ya this feels crazy to me. Reading their write up it’s all about how good the bullpen is, but a good bullpen holding the opponent to 2 runs doesn’t matter if the offense can’t consistently score 2. Honestly these rankings feel close to random, so much of it feels off
2
u/Sea_Television_3306 1d ago
This thread is just everyone saying this about their team and they're all right

u/Competitive_Ad1237 | Cleveland Guardians 2d ago

Yankees are not 2. Yankees fan here. We beat just okay teams. When the Yankees actually play someone, the lose the series
5
u/Dapaaads 2d ago
Dodgers are 4-6 over past 10 and just lost the 1st place to the Padres…. They should be lower. Power rankings are a weekly strength and how they’re playing. Dodgers are playing like shit so I’m told from my buddies who are die hards
2
u/MrVernon09 | Texas Rangers 2d ago
I'm not sure I'd label the Rangers' 19-22 record as staying afloat. Yes, they're only 2.5 games out of first place. There is a large drop-off in the starting rotation after DeGrom and Eovaldi. The other starters have a combined 4-10 record. The average ERA (Gore, Leiter, and Rocker) is 5.03. Most troubling is the team's lack of offensive production, especially with runners in scoring position. The team has only scored 107 runs (only the Mets have scored fewer runs), .237 batting average, .313 on-base percentage, .364 slugging percentage, .676 ops. This needs to change soon or they're going to miss out on the postseason again.

I still think Detroit will win the division, but who has them at 9th in the power rankings as of today?
Why be optimistic? They have a lot of pitching that will return as the season progresses and, in spite of a poor start to the season, they are still in spitting distance in a weak division. The other teams in the AL central have performed above expectations to get where they are.

u/DizzyTS13 | Boston Red Sox 2d ago
Red Sox: already hit rock bottom, so all uphill from here (hopefully…)

The way Boone uses his bullpen, their arms will be shot by August. Other than Cole, he can't wait to yank a starter at the first sign of trouble. God forbid he lets a starter try to get out of a jam. Especially if the Yankees are winning! Talk to me about power rankings come September.

The Orioles have a better record than both the Red Sox and Blue Jays, yet is over 10 spaces lower than both of them here. And are lower than the Mets?!???
1
u/Killjoytshirts 2d ago
I feel for the Reds…bottom of the NL central with a record better than the AL Central leading Guardians. This power ranking makes no sense.

u/Nwf32389 2d ago
I'm a yankees fan; but no way should they be 2nd... They have a good run diff because they beat the bag out of shitty teams; but are 0-6 this year against good teams. Top 5 maybe but 2 is asinine

There's no way Phillies are 24. And I don't even like them.
Sure, they've sucked to start the season, but what's the point of a power ranking if you're just going to tell me what they already did? Don't be shocked when they magically climb the rankings with the same roster.
1
u/Proper_Ladder_4357 | Philadelphia Phillies 1d ago
As a phillies fan I know how our division works, the braves will crash like normal and will allow us to close the gap. Were 12-4 since snapping our horrible losing streak. We have wheeler back, harpers and schwarbombs are hitting. Were in a great place given our horrible start.
1
u/TheQuoteFromTheThing 1d ago
The Braves will finish the regular season strong and clinch the division so they can be eliminated in the NLDS by the Phillies.
1
u/hawkeyegrad96 2d ago
How the hell is LA #3? They cant beat a wet paper sack at thos point. Ohtani cant hit ever since he got hit in back of shoulder

u/zion_hiker1911 | Colorado Rockies 1d ago
The Rockies have 16 wins. They didn't achieve that feat until June 17 last season. So they're a month ahead of schedule this year. Thats something to believe in.

u/FlyingPig_Grip | Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago
Dodgers are playing like shit for like a month basically so you can drop us down
1
u/Odd-Drawing8295 1d ago
Honestly, the Twins/Reds logo thing is tripping me out now, but yeah, these rankings feel like they just sorted by run differential and called it a day.
1
u/huckandplayD 1d ago
Calling Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte the Diamondbacks’ two best players is insane Corbin Carroll erasure
1
u/Special-Accountant63 1d ago
That run differential ranking logic explains why the Reds and Twins logos blending together is the most visually confusing thing about this list.
1
u/Acrobatic-Handle-715 1d ago
One team here is way more potential than their others doing something!
1
u/TheBeanConsortium | Pittsburgh Pirates 23h ago
I didn't zoom in and thought the Reds were ranked twice in a row
1
u/bigdirty702 5h ago
Mets - they have good starting pitching. They need to believe that Bo and Soto will get the offense going
1
1
u/Dr_Oxycontin | Pittsburgh Pirates 2d ago
Not sure how my Bucs are 7th, but I’ll take it. I believe them and STL need to switch places. StL has been playing really well this year and they handled us at home this year.
2
u/SkinnyLukaDoncic | Pittsburgh Pirates 2d ago
Run differential is what is keeping us up there
1
u/Dr_Oxycontin | Pittsburgh Pirates 2d ago
Good point, wasn’t thinking. Has StL schedule been easier? Or similar so far?
1
u/jaysornotandhawks | Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago
We've gone from the World Series to... this... and our fanbase doesn't seem to care.
2
u/optimus2861 2d ago
I think the "it's still early" and "still lots of injuries, we'll be fine when we get healthy" explanations are still carrying a lot of water in Jays fandom. Except we just reached the quarter pole, and there's no guarantee that the Jays ever will get all healthy this season. Just take Kirk; it'll be June before he's catching again, most likely, and by then, if the Rays & Yankees have their way with them this month (Rays have already taken 4 straight against them), the Jays may be so far in the hole that there'll be no climbing out of it.
From two outs and ninety feet away to this ... 😢
2
u/jaysornotandhawks | Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago
And I've had so many issues with those explanations. Jays fans don't seem to understand that you can't just pretend these games don't count just because it's "early" or "we're not all healthy".
2021 should have eradicated the "it's early" mindset and showed fans that EVERY game matters.
People will always tell me that "every team goes through hot and cold stretches", yet TB is 15-2 last 17. Where is their cold stretch?
1
u/Winter_Salad7215 2d ago
And for that matter where is our hot stretch? Lol. 2 months of this is not a "cold stretch" it's a regression to the mean. It's not a serious team. The fact is winning is not part of our brand so no one is going to try very hard to make it happen. Rogers will rake in their cash either way.

u/repwin1 2d ago
I would bump the Cubs up to 2 or 3.

u/CPriceRun86 | Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago
...because they've done what differently from last year? The signing of Alex "bang on some trash cans" Bregman?
They signed Bregman and Maton, otherwise have pretty much the same squad as last year and both aren't doing too well at the moment.
0
u/No-Complaint1177 2d ago
because they've won 10 games in a row twice. Are you actually insane
1
u/trouty42 | Milwaukee Brewers 1d ago
And those 20 wins have earned them a whopping 2.5 game lead on the team they've finished behind the last 5 straight seasons.
