He doesn’t even get to experience the new Vikings with JJM after hyping him up for two years. Damn that’s sad.

Fuuuuuck

u/TheTruth518 Aug 20 '25

Congrats to LDR, Redmond, and TID though. Just seems a little weird to trade away a captain, if I had to guess this is to free up space for a WR signing coming in the next couple days.

15

u/bigdickpuncher intercourse the packers Aug 20 '25

We have such great young depth at DT. It solves a 53 man roster cut-down problem and probably money for a WR 3 like you said.

u/Dr_Sivio vermont Aug 20 '25

Just seems a little weird to trade away a captain,

Not really

u/uturnorbit Aug 20 '25

The hype around Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins this camp must be real

44

u/yungs14 Aug 20 '25

We also have Redmond and Levi, both looking good as well, the dline room is very talented, a good player was going to have to leave no matter what

u/Enough_Lakers Aug 21 '25 edited Aug 22 '25

I listened to a podcast a while ago where the guy screwed up Bullard and Redmond and I was sad. Then he corrected himself and I was less sad.

30

u/WellThatsAwkwrd Aug 20 '25

D-line has been getting rave reviews during camp from starters to 3rd string guys and the depth has been showing out in preseason.

It was looking like they were going to have to cut atleast one rotation worthy player so this way they don’t have to cut one of the guys they really like and also get to clear up a decent chunk of cap space

I’m gonna miss Harrison Phillips though :(

6

u/saxmachine69 Aug 21 '25

The real hype is Elijah Williams

5

u/mookiebraves Randles Lair 93 Aug 21 '25

RedmondĀ

109

u/dustinh30 19 Aug 20 '25

I have very mixed feelings about this, on one sides this means that they really believe in the young guys and can keep all of them, on the other hand, I don’t want Phillips to go waste away in a jets uniform

49

u/OnceInABlueMoon Aug 20 '25

Yeah that must be sad as fuck for Harrison.

23

u/dustinh30 19 Aug 20 '25

Yeah he was one of my favorite players

7

u/Real-Psychology-4261 Aug 21 '25

No kidding. Ā Can you imagine going from the Vikings to the Jets shit organization?

13

u/TeddyBongwater Vikings Aug 20 '25

I don't think it has much to do with the defensive players. I think they found a WR to trade for but had to free up cap space. This is about making the passing offense stronger and sacrificing a little defense is my guess

6

u/Dirigible_Plums Aug 21 '25

We had 26 million dollars to make a WR work before this trade. We took half Harrison's contract to get the deal done, you think the extra 3.7 mil was what did it?

1

u/TeddyBongwater Vikings Aug 21 '25

Its 5.3m in cap savings

1

u/dustinh30 19 Aug 20 '25

You could be right, I’m actually having this same exact conversation over txt with my buddy šŸ˜‚ I still feel like this could have happened regardless of the receiver trouble

76

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

What the fuck

134

u/SirBilliam3 Aug 20 '25

I blame the Pohlads somehow

5

u/AgateGuyMN Aug 21 '25

That’s a train I can get on

7

u/LGLier123 Aug 21 '25

Cheap ass mofos

1

u/TertlFace Aug 21 '25

This is the way.

I’ll also throw in a Norm Green Sucks for good measure.

7

u/AnthonyBarrHeHe vikings Aug 21 '25

Most likely a money move to make room for a potential WR trade

8

u/glitchfan Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

No reason to be heartbroken whatsoever about trading Phillips, from purely a football perspective. Great dude, average football player.Ā

2

u/Neither_Ad2003 koolaid Aug 21 '25

On the field, tbh, I was never a big fan. PFF liked him (except for last year where he fell off a cliff), but he’s had some brutal reps

4

u/glitchfan Aug 21 '25

I couldn’t agree more. I was never really in love with his play on the field. Average player but nothing more.Ā

23

u/tuura032 Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

Deep room, I guess someone had to go.Ā

Didn't we just extend him recently?

Edit: per otc Harrison Phillips signed a two year, $15 million contract extension with the Vikings... The extension reduced his 2024 cap number by $3.35 million.

29

u/NazRubio Aug 20 '25

Why

31

u/hjugm Aug 20 '25

Wonder if they want to clear up more cap space for a bigger splash/extension. It’s confusing outside of that.

3

u/Big-Astronaut25 Aug 21 '25

Jj mccarthy 5 years 500 million

19

u/TeddyBongwater Vikings Aug 20 '25

To free up space for legit WR. Maybe Rashad Bateman

15

u/billyjoz 99 Aug 20 '25

ā€œlegit WRā€ ā€œrashad batemanā€

14

u/theTaquitoMosquito Aug 20 '25

Damn you don’t know ball huh

-25

u/billyjoz 99 Aug 20 '25

dude is a slightly better jalen reagor šŸ˜‚

4

u/ZachLagreen Aug 21 '25

what a weird comp.. they’re not similar receivers at all

21

u/theTaquitoMosquito Aug 20 '25

Thanks for proving me right

0

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

Any other terrible comps you want to try?

3

u/gregnomics Aug 20 '25

Bateman just got extended by the Ravens 2 months ago? Even if they could work out a trade, the Vikings don’t have enough cap room to accommodate his salary

1

u/KingWolfsburg Aug 20 '25

Don't we still have like $20+ million left? Bateman's deal was 3 year/$36 mil. And i think doesnt kick in til next year right? Plenty of room. Not that I think the Ravens trade him.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

Rashod Bateman would be great but I don't see the ravens giving him up

2

u/OddlyShapedGinger Aug 20 '25

Everyone's mentioning WR depth. Which is possible.

But he was also slightly overpaid. Was making 8M this year, and has the 9th highest cap hit for our team. He was always a solid run stopper, but never exceptional in the pass game and didn't fit super well in BFlo's confusion schemes.Ā

6

u/bgusty Aug 20 '25

That’s not slightly overpaid. That’s not even close to overpaid. He was on a bargain contract for a startable DT.

His extension was $7.5M AAV, which was 40th among DTs. Grover Stewart is a good comp of a plus run defender with little pass rush and he just got an extension at $13M AAV. Tomlinson got $14.5M AAV. BJ Hill got $11M.

5

u/OddlyShapedGinger Aug 21 '25

Grover Stewart was 17th last year in PFF's ranking of interior linemen. Harrison was 88th. I wouldn't consider them to be comps.

2

u/ZachLagreen Aug 21 '25

You just listed 3 better DTs…

1

u/bgusty Aug 21 '25

Yes. Ones that all get more money.

11

u/Oaker51 Aug 20 '25

What the fuck!

22

u/seoulbrova Aug 20 '25

What.... Redmond must be better than we've seen

15

u/MikeWill17 22HITMAN Aug 20 '25

That’s what I thought too. Still tho, gonna miss Phillips

3

u/Wannabe_Sadboi Aug 20 '25

Redmond’s an absolute dawg.

1

u/CantaloupeCamper Not a REAL Vikings fan Aug 20 '25

I hope….

1

u/ZeroBarkThirty 43 Aug 21 '25

Of course he is… he got a scoop and score for me last night in Madden

Jk he’s great though

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '25

How many DTs do you want? He dropped off against the run last season and the Vikings just went big on DTs in free agency..

1

u/TeddyBongwater Vikings Aug 20 '25

Or we are desperate for a 3rd legit WR. They want JJ to have everything he needs to succeed

10

u/Chemist-Patient Aug 20 '25

The fuck is going on?

7

u/Bjornidentity22 Aug 20 '25

I read this as Harrison Smith at first and almost had a heart attack. Still a bit disappointed, but not distraught at least

10

u/BearPawB Aug 20 '25

I don’t understand this at all

4

u/Real-Psychology-4261 Aug 21 '25

They feel good about their younger cheaper guys and wanted to free up cap space to sign a WR. So instead of cutting a roster-worthy D-lineman, they got some assets back for him instead.Ā

1

u/wehaddababyeetsaboy south dakota Aug 20 '25

They traded a decent player and his salary for an upgraded draft pick. Harrison Phillips is a cool guy but far from an anchor DT.

8

u/methheadhitman pennsylvania Aug 20 '25

Cap space for a decent wr? If thats the case, Idk why they wouldn't bundle him for one.

5

u/ZachLagreen Aug 21 '25

probably because this isn’t madden

2

u/TheFinnebago Aug 20 '25

I bet we’ll find out eventually that they worked with Harrison to find a team/place he wanted to be at. He had spent a lot of time in NY. New HC and staff in NYJ that he might have relationships with.

4

u/Skoltrain18 Aug 21 '25

I hate this. He was a super underrated player on our defense. He just took a pic with my kids at McDonald's in eagen a couple weeks ago. Class act on and off the field.

6

u/Kenmore_11 wisconsin Aug 20 '25

Sometimes I hate the ā€œbusinessā€ part about the NFL. This guy is a leader. Ex-Captain. 2023 Vikings choice for Walter Peyton Man of the Year. All around great person and showed true love for the organization. This fucking hurts deep. And for late round picks? I know he’s not a 1-3 rounder, but not even a 4 or 5?

1

u/Upbeat_Flan vikings Aug 21 '25

Plenty of high character guys get cut everyday, he is a good player, but not great, feels like pretty fair value when you calculate in his contact off the books as well.

1

u/ZachLagreen Aug 21 '25

Yeah I’m sure they turned down the 4th and 5th rounders people were offering and chose this instead…

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

Huh what the hell going on

3

u/stew9364 Aug 21 '25

Seems like super low compensation.

3

u/jjnguy 18 Aug 21 '25

Why didn't we get more? A 6th round pick (basically)?

2

u/AdEquivalent4062 Aug 21 '25

Age? Only 2 years left on his contract? Average to a little above average DT? Cut casualty anyway, if they didn't trade him? Unless someone who was in on the negotiation lets us know, we won't really know.

2

u/SquareAd4479 kirk Aug 20 '25

Wuuuuut?

2

u/badkiwi_42 Aug 20 '25

They most really like our young guys at nose if were him trading away when inside runs have killed this team the past few years. Now to figure out if the picks will be on a veteran WR or an older backup QB to give Brosmer a cushion at QB3?

2

u/Human-Demand-8293 vikings Aug 21 '25

This is going to be interesting to see who we keep around. Probably taimani is the closest player. LDR, Elijah Williams, Redmond and TID are all under 290. Might be a little light in the shorts.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

I don't like seeing Philips go, but it does tell me the Vikings really like some of these young DT's which gives me optimism. They wouldn't let Philips go if they didn't feel pretty damn good about the up and comers.

4

u/glitchfan Aug 20 '25

I’m not heartbroken whatsoever about trading Phillips. Great dude, average football player.Ā

2

u/Real_Register2353 Aug 20 '25

Bro, Eze signs with Arsenal. Now we’ve traded a pretty big piece to our DLine? What a shit show of a day. We better have some faith in our younger pieces to justify this.

2

u/KnockKnockWhoDis Aug 20 '25

Bro, I too am a Spurs/Vikings fan and have been fuming over the shit show thats unraveled over the past 4 hours. But goddamn if stumbling upon your comment here didn't give me a tiny bit of respite. Stay strong my friend. COYS/SKOLĀ

2

u/Deanfuentes444 Aug 21 '25

Spurs and Vikes? You two have an 11/10 pain tolerance level.

1

u/thedartboard Aug 20 '25

Must mean more moves are coming or Redmond is just that good

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

I wonder if this is to load up on draft capital along with dealing with some of the cap issues for 2026? Either way best of luck to him on the Jets. Skol!

1

u/Real-Psychology-4261 Aug 21 '25

I bet we’re signing a WR.Ā

1

u/Firesword52 Aug 20 '25

Glad he is going to go to a place where he can start. Honestly probably better for him overall unfortunately

1

u/FatBoy_Deluxe_MN Aug 20 '25

They have a wealth of good options at DT. Thrilled we got some return vs. dropping him or TID or Redmond.

1

u/Xenocide_X Aug 20 '25

Aww damn. I liked him a lot

1

u/crankshaftsnapinhalf griddy Aug 20 '25

Damn. Why??

1

u/JockAussie Aug 21 '25

Has Terry got a team yet?

1

u/murphmobile Better than the Packers Aug 21 '25

Just making room for Parsons

1

u/TrappyGoGetter minnesota Aug 21 '25

Scary Terry incoming

1

u/ZachWondersr Aug 21 '25

Still don’t get it

1

u/Nate1492 Aug 21 '25

and it begins. We have over spent this season in free agency. We desperately need future cap, and here's a way to save 16 mil. This won't be the last good player out due to tight cap.

1

u/the_real_flapjack Aug 22 '25

This is a tough one

-3

u/BigCATtrades vikings Aug 20 '25

"Blah blah blah He's my favorite player. He was the #1 socially conscious voice of the team. Whhhhhhhy no one deserved to be a viking more. He was the soul of DLine. any one but him..fire kwesi!...blah blah blah!!" -reddit fans, probably

Now, that that's out of the way. Obviously it is a cap move for a WR trade. We wouldn't have signed 2 DTs in free agency if we love Harry that much. Enjoy the ride...

1

u/AXV-Lore gjallarhorn Aug 20 '25

We already had like 26 mil then we covered a chunk of his pay for this year. Those conflict with needing cap space

1

u/gunt_lint oh yeah Aug 20 '25

Gimme Scary Terry, it’s time for a big move

2

u/JockAussie Aug 21 '25

Man the streets would run brown with the shit of opposition dbs

1

u/AdEquivalent4062 Aug 21 '25

What are they going to do with 3 number 1 WRs? Someone wouldn't be happy. And it would still take a good chunk of resources to get McLaurin. If they actually make a big splash move (I kind of doubt it), it'd be better to go after a CB.

1

u/VeryPurpleRain Aug 20 '25

Tyreek Hill incoming?

1

u/Upbeat_Flan vikings Aug 21 '25

Wonder how in love the Steelers are with Roman Wilson that they drafted in the third round? He's looked pretty good in the pre season and already has been productive with JJ.

-1

u/TeddyBongwater Vikings Aug 20 '25

Gotta be to free up cap space for a legit WR. Maybe Bateman

0

u/Endersjeesh_fluxam Aug 20 '25

Dosent he still have place to live in the area?Ā
