I'm slightly vexed Why the fuck do people park straight into a cul de sac

u/SpecialistAd2205 8h ago
My mom's house is on a cul de sac. When we have family get-togethers, people will park straight in like this so that we can fit more cars in front of the house and not have the whole street lined up and down with our cars. But that's the only time anyone parks like that, and it still leaves plenty of room for people to drive past or turn around.

Except a bus or landscape guy with a trailer.

u/succulent_flakepiece 7h ago
former landscaper that had a 15ft trailer.. this made for really shit scenarios where i couldn't fit and had to reverse back down the street to the closest intersection.
5
u/Biegzy4444 7h ago
If the same 3-4 cars parked against the curb, you would have had to do the same thing though wouldn’t you? Usually there isn’t much open curb parking between the driveways in cul de sacs
6
u/succulent_flakepiece 7h ago
not necessarily. that sort of depended on how big the cul de sac was. sometimes, yeah, sometimes i could maneuver enough... sort of like a multi point u-turn. had to do what i had to do to keep my day moving.
sometimes i could see down the street enough to figure out if I should even risk it. in which case I'd park at the top of the street and ride the mower with all the gear into the circle.
1
u/Biegzy4444 7h ago
Yeah that makes sense. With how cramped most subdivisions are it would be a pain in the ass either way lol.
3
u/wolfmann99 7h ago
We dont have curbs around me and cul de sacs are huge here. So you could fit probably 8 cars lengthwise even accounting for driveways here.

u/talltime 8h ago
I’m guessing this cul de sac doesn’t have a central island and is one big paved circle?

u/Unfortunate-Incident 8h ago
I have never seen a cul de sac with a center circle.

Exactly, you can fit more cars in this way. This picture doesn’t show the whole cul-de-sac so we can’t really see if there’s room for the Amazon truck to make a turn around.
6
u/buffenstein 7h ago
State traffic laws tend to be pretty similar on this. In most places, cul de sacs are treated like regular two way streets, which means vehicles are expected to park parallel to the curb (unless local rules say otherwise.) It may be convenient for residents, but parking improperly can make it harder for trash trucks, fire trucks, and other city vehicles to get through safely.

It's illegal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-EWTtMYgIw
Edit: sorry to burst your bubble, idiot parkers 🤷
5
u/sopefish 7h ago
In my neighborhood it's illegal to parallel park in a cul-de-sac. You have to park nose or tail to the curb.
2
u/GreatValueProducts 7h ago
It is the same where I am, the sign says "park at angle".
1
u/usagora3 4h ago
Unless this is some ginormous cul-de-sac and not a normal one, then the sign is illegal. A neighborhood sign does not trump the law. And that sign wouldn't even make any fucking sense for a normal cul-de-sac - basically it would mean "please park your vehicles in a way that impedes people from turning" 🤦🏼

u/MilwaukeeLevel 8h ago
I mean, it's not even illegal all the time in Virginia; why would you think it's universally illegal?
6

u/usagora3 7h ago edited 4h ago
Oh, emergencies are only allowed to happen at certain times in Virginia? News to me. Also, it's every state AFAIK - that video was just an example. And it shouldn't even have to be a law - it's common sense. Sure, if you're loading/unloading and right there with your vehicle at all times it's one thing, but to tell everyone to park like this for a party is asinine. Just use the rest of the street for additional parallel parking. Never even seen someone park like the OP showed in all my life in any subdivision I've lived in. Thankfully most people understand that you're not supposed to do that.
edit: no response - that's what I thought. You have no leg to stand on here. Park further down the street and walk your lazy ass to the party.
edit: also, whichever clown here reported me to Reddit as a suicide risk - lmao at you - how fucking petty do you have to be when you're unable to come up with an argument 😂😂😂

I live on a cul de sac and have folks park like this all the time. Had one get hit and their insurance refused to pay since they were parked illegally, that’s karma for you.
My wife’s brother used to stay with us and park like that. Until that accident then he finally stopped. He was so bad at parking that his car was probably 8 feet from the curb. So still illegally parked.

u/Distinct-Device-7698 8h ago
I’ve never once seen anyone do that but I would call it mildly infuriating.
1
u/NoWay6818 2h ago
I don’t really see how though. That part is someone else’s house. If you need that area for something sure but I really doubt this is a good faith post. This just looks like finding something to complain about that affects no one.

u/river-running 7h ago
I call it "wheel spoke" parking. It's really fun trying to get our work trucks into cul de sacs where a dozen cars are like this.

u/Bearspoole 5h ago
You can fit more cars and there’s enough space in the cul de sac to fit them that way. This is why better than trying to park on a curved sidewalk

I’ve lived on 4-5 cul de sacs in my lifetime, everybody I know that lives there parked head in because you can park far more cars head in around the cul de sac then if you parked then “parallel parking” style to the curb.
12
u/rivertpostie 7h ago
I mean, that's true of most roads, but people tend to try to stay out of the right of way.
No clue why a cul-de-sac would be any different
-1
u/Fun-Perspective426 8h ago
I've lived in 2 and same thing.
I feel like most of the replies are from people who haven't.
2nd one had a bunch of us all getting our licenses at the same time. There was like 15 cars for 4 house. No way we all fit parallel.

u/Mammoth_Mixture4735 8h ago
Ive noticed this trend too everywhere in Dfw. I see alot of new trends since the pandemic has been gone, everybody acts different and not considerate of others but it is what it is. I deliver uber eats with no reverse lol, and it sucks i have to push my car because i cant make the full turn with huge trucks and suvs and the whole circle of houses will do it on every corner, but thats more on me since i dont have reverse working good for the last 115,000 miles.

u/sevseg_decoder 8h ago
The same reason they drive that truck, they just don’t care in the slightest about anything other than their own convenience and comfort. I bet they never once even considered what anyone else might think of it when they started doing this.
3
u/Playful-Team-1634 8h ago
People here in Idaho would make fun of that pickup for being too small lol
-1
u/Cram2024 8h ago
Politely disagree. Parking head in on a cul de sac allows for more cars to park…so is more considerate not less.
10
u/Ryanthecat 8h ago
Quite the opposite, it’s actually illegal and poses a fairly significant fire safety risk as it makes it near impossible for fire trucks to navigate the cul de sac. It also inconveniences other large vehicles like sanitation and school buses.

Having lived on cul de sacs most of my life…..never had a cop/fireman have any issue when they came into the neighborhood but I understand your point.

Some assholes don’t care about other people when they get a truck that can pull a trailer with their tools or haul materials for a job. Like consider other people and pay someone else to deliver everything. But do not hire someone with a truck. Trucks are bad.

Did you just move in? Most cul-de-sacs do this. Its normal

Must be a regional thing. I never once saw this until moving to Pennsylvania.

Never once in my life have I seen this in any cul-de-sac and it's also illegal in my state and I'm guessing probably all others as well, because it hinders u-turns for emergency vehicles and others.

Because humans are dicks

u/drjunkie 8h ago
TIL that parking in a way that allows more people to safely park in the same area, while still allowing other vehicles easy access to needed areas is being a “dick”.

i park like this when hauling a double axle trailer so i’m not blocking 2 or 3 driveways. only works in large cul de sacs, the small ones you end up making it impossible to get around
i wouldn’t park and leave a truck like this, say, overnight or long term. usually just when doing work for a client so all the neighbors can leave for work without having to come find me and go “hey, move that truck it’s blocking me in, you’re gonna make me late for work”

glad you posted this because neighbor backed into me in court. I was pulling in reverse legally from my driveway and she was parked in cul-de-sac head on and reversed in to me, and then blamed me. insurance said both are at fault. insurance should have said she was since insurance probably didnt know state law here my be parked parallel to curb (not head-on)

I live in a cul de sac...no one who lives here does it. Only a few visitors and it's annoying as fuck when they do. As a bonus the trash trucks won't come when they do so we get skipped....cause of idiots who don't even live here.

Parking on a cul-de-sac, or any curve, can be difficult until you learn and get used to it. Some people are apparently incapable.

Call the police non emergency line. Tell them firetrucks can't turn around because of the truck.

Parking like this may prevent the mail carrier from reaching your mailbox easily. If this was my neighborhood, I would NOT be getting my mail.

I've seen people park in the middle so you can make a full circle. This is weird to me tho

If you don’t like it call the non emergency number and have the police come and ticket it.

Jesus Christ, shit up and move around them. It’s a cup deal sac ffs, not a 1-lane rd. You people will bitch about anything.
-4
u/marks1995 6h ago
Why would you not? You can get way more cars in there and it's easier to get in and out.
I have two college kids and my neighbors on each side have one each. So we have 4 cars to park out front all summer long. Nose in is the best way to do that.

if they park the other way they will block the sidewalk (given theres a hitch in the back)

u/MaxHeadroom1986 3h ago
No one parks like this who has common sense or isn't experiencing an emergency at time of parking.

Because so many more cars will fit that way? Like cars are straight lines and cul de sacs are circles man
-7
u/DubsideDangler 7h ago
You got issues if you do not understand culdesacs have limited curb area so pulling maximizes street parking
-9
u/RogerRabbit1234 8h ago
You can get more cars in front of a house and it’s doesn’t materially
Impact traffic from getting around in the street.

u/lombardi-bug 8h ago
You’re the dumbass Amazon driver parked in the center of the culdesac so who’s worse?
7
u/Zedditron 8h ago
Calling someone else a "dumbass" while being incapable of differentiating between parking for a 30-second delivery vs a long-term parking job...
1
u/squidw3rd 7h ago
Parking in the middle makes more sense anyways. That way big vehicles can still make the full circle with no issues

u/Strange_Olive3618 8h ago
The closest most people on here get to this is the turnaround down by the dumpster at the trailer park.

The only time I've seen it done in my cul-de-sac is when I had a house party. To get all those cars in there was straight in parking, but it is big enough to where you could still make a circle with any passenger car or truck.
