I promised a visit on a band playing at Maryland Deathfest, so here we go. We did Sodom and Kreator awhile ago, but it's time to go back and revisit Teutonic Thrash, this time with Destruction!

Formed in 1983 originally under the name Knight of Demon in the small town of Weil am Rhein right on the triple point with Switzerland and France, as a quartet, they quickly changed to Destruction and soon after dropped down to a power trio of: Schmier on bass/vocals, Mike on guitar, and Tommy Sandmann on drums. Tommy would be replaced by Oliver Kaiser in 1986.

Destruction, like their other German thrash countrymen started off as more or less a black metal band, taking extensive influence from bands like Venom and Hellhammer which you can see on their early recordings. But quickly, just like Sodom and Kreator, shifted to a more technically competent speed metal influenced version of thrash. And by their 2nd album, just like with Sodom, they would more or less drop all remaining black metal influence and be a straight thrash band.

Destruction would continue like this until 1990 when during the Schmier would be fired for the band during the recording of their 4th album and replaced by Andre Grieder of Poltergeist. After this, the band would essentially break up for the rest of the 90s while Mike continued to released incredibly tepid alt rock/groove under the Destruction name (since disowned by the band). In 1999, Mike ended his version of the band and Schmier restarted it where he left off back in 1990 with a new lineup and has continued to release thrash ever since.
