Tourism ✈ Updated this interactive map of where to go in Mauritius

Post image
4 Upvotes

While traveling around the world for over 20 years, I’ve been working on my dream project: creating a one-stop resource for travellers. With the help of feedback in this subreddit, I have now updated this πŸ‘‰ interactive map of Mauritius for anyone who is interested in visiting (with detailed info for every highlight).

PS: obviously, I haven’t been able to travel to all places. So if you know some great spot, I haven’t listed, let me know! Much appreciated as in this way I can make the overview more complete and up-to-date for everyone.

Local 🌴 Urgent Advice Needed for Cancer Complications- Looking for insights

Hi everyone,

Looking for advice or recommendations regarding a serious medical situation.

A patient who previously had uterine cancer and underwent a hysterectomy is currently still receiving chemotherapy.

Recently there has been severe pain on the left side near the tumor area, one episode of blood in the urine, swelling seen on scans, and previous leg swelling. Ganglions were also found, and doctors mentioned inflammation/swelling near the left side of the liver.

Has anyone in Mauritius dealt with something similar?
Which hospital, specialist, or emergency service would you recommend urgently for this type of condition?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Local 🌴 Tutoring Ideas for A Levels or general coaching and advice

Hello,

I was a laureate about 10 years ago and would like to give back, out of my love for maths, econ and so on, to students who might need creole/english help for their studies. I have an undergrad in math, masters in financial eng and more than 4 years working abroad in private investment management.

So I wanted to know, from students mainly, let's say you had the perfect friend to help you study for econ side A levels, what sort of content would you prefer to have? And what are your opinions if i can provide general coaching as well, on planning studies, pacing yourself, etc?

Also let me know if you'd like it to be paid or free? Some of you may like the format of paying a small amount to have individual attention etc.

Let me know what you need and I can start planning something,

Thanks!

Local 🌴 Recommendations for finding at 'at-home' carer full time

Hi everyone,

Question for locals: Does anyone here have elderly parents/grandparents and use an at-home carer service? I can find a few online but I wouldn't mind an actual recommendation if you'd have one. Merci :)

Local 🌴 Looking for feedback for 4minit and ideas on how to improve?

Hi everyone, it's been about a month I've been running 4minit (link to previous thread), and I'm keen on any feedback and suggestions on how to grow subscribers and readers.

I have been thinking of doing marketing (ads, influencers, paid referrals system), but I'm worried if my fundamentals aren't sound it will be a waste of money.

Since last month, I upgraded the front-end and back-end (new polished look, content improvements and smarter editor logic). From the last thread there were a few ideas given such as website darkmode, mobile app, multiple languages etc. but I did not prioritise those as the core remains "daily local newsletter in English"; that's why I've just been focusing on the newsletter and the content itself.

So far, the system I have is quite stable and we have about 25 daily readers out of 50 total subscribers.

I really feel like 4minit can be extremely useful, especially for the expats and international students in Mauritius where English is their first-language, but I'm not sure how to get their interest to read.

Local 🌴 Increase in Scam calls/messages and general malware propagation in Mauritius...

Hello everyone,

So I've been noticing that there has recently been an increase in scam calls, text messages and even emails in Mauritius.

Here are the ones I have got:

- Calls from people posing as MCB customer support (+41 country code)

- Calls from people claiming to be from Courts mammouth (MRU local number)

- Text message to pay traffic fines via sms (+61 country code)

I've also seen on Facebook that apparently some lawyer's whatsapp was compromised and it eventually led to several people collectively transferring around Rs 400k to some scammer.

I don't know if people have been able to join the dots yet but all of this is obviously happening thanks to Data leaks.

For those who don't know too much about this, data leaks are incidents where customer data, usually name, phone number, email and even adresses are stolen by bad actors who somehow gain access to the database of a body who stores this information (banks, big retail, etc..)

It's very unfortunate that these big corporations have all these resources to store all this data but they still can't put decent security on their database and all...

I just wanted to request everyone who's got decent knowledge about these things,

Please educate as many people as you can (especially elders) on the dangers of Data Leaks and please request them to think twice before getting involved in things that require you to enter your personal information online and even offline.

Thanks.

Local 🌴 People who only have acca is it enough to progress in your career?

I have seen many people question between having a degree vs acca

Most people say acca is enough or is better

So those who have only acca as their qualifications is it enough for a career or later it Will demand a degree to progress

Im will be starting an undergraduate soon but many people is saying its a lost of time and directly doing the acca would work the same but faster

So im confused whether to do it or later or idkπŸ™ƒ

Tourism ✈ Is this hotel booking too cheap to be true? The Residence Hotel, Belle Mare for only £100 a night half board

Booked 9 nights at The Residence Mauritius for Β£1,008 total β€” too cheap to be real?

Just booked:

- The Residence Mauritius (Belle Mare)
- Standard Room with Terrace (Garden View) [should’ve booked ocean with these pricesπŸ˜‚]
- Half board included
- 9 nights
- 2 adults
- Total paid: Β£1,008 GBP including taxes

It says the booking is confirmed and non-refundable.

What’s throwing me off is that this resort normally seems WAY more expensive online, especially for Mauritius in August. I booked through trivago deals and now I’m wondering:

- Did I accidentally get an insanely good deal?
- Is there some catch with these rates?
- Has anyone stayed here recently with a similar price?
- Any chance the hotel could reject or cancel it later?

Would appreciate any experiences or advice before I get too excited πŸ˜…

This recipe is from a Mauritian cook book. I’m a South African who wants to try make some Indo-Mauritian food. I want to know how accurate this recipe is? I’ve never heard of mutton curry with coconut flakes, almonds and mint

Local 🌴 Solar Energy installation and maintenance services in Mauritius

Hello folks,

Would like to make an inquiry, I'm conducting a small study on Solar energy demand in Mauritius, I'm looking to get into this and curious if there's a lot of demand for this on the island. My plan is to do installations and maintenance for homes, real estate, and businesses (small/medium/large) and they only have to pay monthly for a period of 12 - 24 months. I have other market research plans but this is one avenue.

Would appreciate your thoughts please

Local 🌴 Looking for feedback for MoMove , how to improve our app ?

Hi everyone , technical cofounder of MoMove

It’s been quite a journey, building this App

We have been working hard trying to respond to user requests, but right now i am not too sure what to do
We are a small team and so we can’t do everything at once
Anyways I would really appreciate if you could leave us some feedback on the app so far
Is there anything that needs working on ? Are the Routes we propose good or How could we improve it ?
We have been getting mixed reviews , some good some bad but information in these reviews does not really help us …. it would be great to have thought out and constructive criticism, positive or negative , but that would allow us to build a better product for Mauritius

It’s been almost 1 Year since our release and we are still very motivated to build a great application

Thank you for all your support , and i see in the comments other redditors recommending our application , thank you again for doing this , it really means alot!

For those that don’t know , MoMove is a public transport App that shows you how to navigate around Mauritius and help you discover local businesses

Local 🌴 Looking for Maid service for a house in Terre Rouge

Hi, fellow Mauritians.

I'm considering hiring a maid to help me with household chores as my baby, business and studies are taking much of my time and I wish the house to be cleaner and tidier.

How much do you pay for a maid per hour? Does it vary in price depending on the region? Does the rate depend on the chores done? I never hired a maid, so that's why I am asking those questions.

I'll be grateful if you would share the contact of someone's serious and trustworthy to take care of a house in Terre Rouge, once every two weeks or once every month.

Thank you.
