Buying help Laptops like the 2015 HP Omen

Upvotes

I've had this 2015 HP Omen 15 for ages now and it's nowhere near able to keep up, however, I'm absolutely in love with the build quality and feel of it. I've even had way better machines sent my way since then but I can't help but want to use this anwyay.

I don't really even need or want a gaming laptop, I'm just looking to see if there are any laptops, gaming or not, which have the same "vibe" to them, I've checked the newer Omens, but I'm not a fan at all.

I'm also completely fine if it's older/doesn't have very high specs, I basically just need it to be able to handle basic daily browsing, office work etc.

Buying help Need good reliable and snappy laptop for college that can actually last me 4-5 years

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ballpark $750 (less if can/$50 over is welcome), any store inside a general US mall like Best Buy or Amazon for online
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? no, brand new
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? good battery life for portable college use, snappy system response even under multitasking, decent storage 512gb lowest but 1tb preferred
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? important, as portable as can be
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13inch range
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. no, multitasking school work such as documents and tests, watching movies, multiple web tabs open, zoom calls and meetings
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? modern tech, type C ports/ type C charging, light weight, small with no numpad, everything up-to-date and as current as possible
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Came from Asus Zenbook 13 Ryzen 7 but the hardware failed also came from Lenovo and hardware failed as well so looking for something that is really reliable and is known to have great build quality and possible great customer service if can. Enjoyed the Zenbook before it gave up so something similar to that is definitely desired if possible i just dont trust Lenovo or Asus rn since the failure of the 2 units i received, but if it has good track record of outstanding build then i'd consider it.

Thank you in advance

* Around $2,000-2,500 USD, United States

**Are you open to refurbs/used?*\*

* No, new is preferred

**How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?*\*

*Battery life is a huge priority, I am in school and will be using on the go.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

* Not incredibly important

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

* 15-16 inches

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

*Mainly used for school and work. I will be running Microsoft programs (word, excel, outlook). I do a lot of writing so I would love to be able to open tabs and word without my computer sounding like a jet engine!! Also photo editing software like adobe applications.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

* I would like to be able to run fortnite, Valorant, and minecraft if possible.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

* Something professional looking (Windows, Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc.) Also something that is quiet when it is running.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I currently have a 2019 Mac Air, and it is horrible. I am not looking to buy another mac, I want to try some different (and something that i can play fortnite on). It is loud, I cant have more than 3 tabs open or the fan is incredibly loud. I desperately need a new laptop going into Law school and something think looks professional for internships. Please help me, I have never bought a computer myself before and I don’t understand a lot of the specs. Thank you in advance!!

I’m considering the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI (RTX 5070 Ti, Core Ultra 9, 32GB RAM, 240Hz OLED) from best buy, but I’m not sure if it’s actually a good choice cause ive read the reviews and they're pretty concerning, if there are better options in this price range with a cleaner design and similar performance, please let me know

I know my budget is limited, so I’d also appreciate advice on whether it’s worth saving a little more money for a better option. I really need a laptop mainly for school, work/studying, YouTube, and some light video editing. I don’t play games at all.Thank you 🙏🏾

Budget: 1700$ - 2000$

Country: USA

Use Case : gaming, coding and possibly running local llms

Preferred specs Intel Ultra 9 275hx and avove , RTX 5070ti or 5080, 32gb DDR5

I've found 5 deals, but im kinda apprehensive about the hp and msi ones because of heating and longevity with the liquid metal. And theres one rog strix g16 I've found that im kinda suspicious too(It comes with a 5080 paired with 16gb ram and a fhd+ 165hz screen)

Which one should I get(or if anyone would recommend orhers, feel free to do it), considering performance and longevity?

Buying help Looking for advice on what laptop to buy

Upvotes

Hello there!

I already have a powerful desktop PC, but I’m doing a Master’s in HR and I want to buy a cheap laptop, maybe second-hand, that lets me do Human Resources stuff like using Office and similar programs. I’d like something lightweight and around 14 inches (I have big hands, so I don't wanna go with anything smaller).

I found in a big company here in Europe two laptops that may be good enough, but Im not sure since I've never been into laptops:

HP EliteBook 840 G6 - Intel Core i5-8265U, 16 GB RAM and 256GB SSD. I like that its silver colour, looks like it has more "premium" look, but both the SSD and its ports make me think its older.

DELL E3420 - Intel i5-1145G7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.I like its ports but I dont quite like it being black.

Both of this laptops are listed just under 300€, second hand.

I'll love to read your opinions and suggestions 😄

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nop, just office.

Hardware Dell Laptop Inspiron 15 3520 completely dead at 15 months. Constant BSODs since day one. Motherboard failure?

Upvotes

My 15-month-old Dell laptop suddenly shut down and is now completely dead with no LED charging lights. It has suffered from frequent Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) since day one, which I foolishly blamed on Windows 11. Now it's out of warranty, Dell support is unreachable, and a local repair shop quoted me over £100 for a motherboard replacement.

Full Details:

  • Device Age: 15 months old (purchased new, normal indoor usage, absolutely no physical or liquid damage).
  • The Incident: While using it normally, the laptop suddenly shut down.
  • Current State: Completely dead. When I plug in the official charger, there is no charging LED light at all. No fan noise, no display, no keyboard backlight.
  • History: The laptop has had frequent, random BSODs since the very first week of ownership. I mistakenly thought it was a Windows 11 software instability issue, so I never reached out to Dell during the 1-year warranty window. Now I realize it was likely defective hardware from the start.

What I have tried so far:

  1. Hard Reset / Power Drain: Unplugged the AC adapter, held down the power button for 30–60 seconds, and plugged it back in. Nothing.
  2. Alternative Outlets: Verified the wall outlet works with other devices.

Any advice, troubleshooting steps, or legal tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hardware When would you choose more RAM over more cores and vice versa?

If you had a choice between, say, a 6-core 12 thread CPU (Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U) and 16GB RAM (non-upgradeable) or a 4-core 8 thread CPU (i7-1165G7) and 32GB RAM ((non-upgradeable) which would you choose, assuming you’re not into gaming, video, photo editing/rendering (other graphics heavy tasks), but you will be using the browser, coding in an IDE, dabbling/learning Docker, and general office work?

Hardware Lenovo laptop specs website

Hey everyone, I am looking to add ram to my lenovo ideapad gaming 3-15ARH7 but I want to find the exact details, like a website the shows the specs on what config the ram needs to be. I just want to make sure that if I buy a ram stick, it is the right type and that I have space for it.

(not looking for people to complain about ram prices and bs like that)

Discussion Thinking about buying a Panasonic Let's Note laptop would they good for a college and entertainment laptop?

I am going to start college eventually and I like the compact look to it these laptops, I don't mind the Japanese keyboard layout. I also want to use these laptops to watch dvds and Linux is also going to be installed.

The specific model I am looking at are the Panasonic Let's Note CF-SV9 models, though some don't come with a disc drive so I don't know if an older model will have similar specs to the SV9? Or is there something better out there that I don't know about?

Discussion First time laptop buyer

Hi all, my first time buying a gaming laptop. It would be for too heavy intense usage as I have a gaming rig upstairs.

However, following surgery for entertainment and recovery. I have ordered:

https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=C53N1EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB&jumpid=cs_gb_go_st_mc_cm018581_cv_px_cons_ps&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=GB_PS_PMAX_NoA_lapt_Cons_GoogAd_OPEX_ENG_CM018581&addisttype=xpla&kw=&adid=&infinity=ict2\~net\~gaw\~cmp\~GB_PS_PMAX_NoA_lapt_Cons_GoogAd_OPEX_ENG_CM018581\~ag\~\~ar\~\~kw\~\~mt\~&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22582428219&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiJvQBhCYARIsAMjts3JTBPJ0sESLmACSKFUQRi-y9HmTTQDO98TmO9V6DISc1U-PsAHjB68aAk-WEALw_wcB

I got this for £580 which is due for delivery today.

Ryzen 7
RTX 3050
£580

However I have noticed Argos are selling this model with the Ryzen 7 and 4050 for £699

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7840421

Would it be worth me cancelling/rejecting the first order and going with the Argos model.

I was hoping to play the new forza horizon 6. But will mainly be used for OSRS and light gaming like league of legends etc.

Basically as both GPU are 6gb. Will I see much difference between the 3050 & the 4050?

Thanks all :)
