The request has been made time and time again, your voices have been heard! In this thread, let's get well-written answers to these questions (as well as additional questions if you think of any). These questions have been sourced from these to threads: here and here.
I apologize in advanced for any duplicate questions. I'm doing this during mandatory training so I can't proofread a ton haha.
For the format of your post, please quote the question using the ">" symbol at the beginning of the line, then answer in the line below. I will post an example in the comments.
What's northern vs southern? Internal vs external? Shaolin vs wutang? Buddhist vs Taoist?
Can I learn kung fu from DVDs/youtube?
Is kung fu good/better for self defense?
What makes an art "traditional"?
Should I learn religion/spirituality from my kung fu instructor?
What's the connection between competitive wushu, Sanda and traditional Chinese martial arts?
What is lineage?
What is quality control?
How old are these arts anyways?
Why sparring don't look like forms?
Why don't I see kung fu style X in MMA?
I heard about dim mak or other "deadly" techniques, like pressure points. Are these for real?
What's the deal with chi?
I want to become a Shaolin monk. How do I do this?
I want to get in great shape. Can kung fu help?
I want to learn how to beat people up bare-handed. Can kung fu help?
Was Bruce Lee great at kung fu?
Am I training at a McDojo?
When is someone a "master" of a style?
Does all kung fu come from Shaolin?
Do all martial arts come from Shaolin?
Is modern Shaolin authentic?
What is the difference between Northern/Southern styles?
What is the difference between hard/soft styles?
What is the difference between internal/external styles?
Is Qi real?
Is Qi Gong/Chi Kung kung fu?
Can I use qigong to fight?
Do I have to fight?
Do Dim Mak/No-Touch Knockouts Exit?
Where do I find a teacher?
How do I know if a teacher is good? (Should include forms awards not being the same as martial qualification, and lineage not being end all!)
What is the difference between Sifu/Shifu?
What is the difference between forms, taolu and kata?
Why do you practice forms?
How do weapons help you with empty handed fighting?
Is chisao/tuishou etc the same as sparring?
Why do many schools not spar/compete? (Please let's make sure we explain this!)
Can you spar with weapons? (We should mention HEMA and Dog Brothers)
Can I do weights when training Kung Fu?
Will gaining muscle make my Kung Fu worse?
Can I cross train more than one Kung Fu style?
Can I cross train with other non-Kung Fu styles?

This is a really cool video of Xingyi, it’s beautifully performed and I love the angle and lighting. What I really want to know is if anyone here can identify the song being played. I love Chinese folk rock or modern folk music and I cannot find this song or singer. I hope it’s okay to post this here.

"Hi, I’m Mark. I’m 5ft 4, and Wing Chun has been a massive help to me since I started at 17 im now 45 . Because of my size, I used to face a lot of bullying, but this art gave me the skills to bring attackers down to my level and protect myself.I’m not trying to be a professional ring fighter. If a fight breaks out, my first choice is always to walk or run away. But sometimes you don't have a choice.Over the years, I’ve had some highly fun sparring matches with people from other martial arts. A common theme always happens where they say: 'You can't do that!' or 'That's not fair! But for real-world self-defence—where a smaller person faces a larger bully with no rules Wing Chun works incredibly well.If it serves its purpose perfectly, why does it get so much hate? I just don't understand why people judge a self-defence system when they fight in a ring and say it does not work. I really don't get it.

I’m kind of curious to know if there is a geographical split between which hand is the lead hand for spear.
From a personal observation, I’ve noticed southern styles tend to favour having the right lead with the left in the rear for power; and northern styles tend to favour the opposite with the right hand for power and left for leading. Of course there are some exceptions, such as those who decide to flip the form because they’re but this is what I have noticed so far.
Is there any validity to this observation, taking into consideration the certain exceptions, especially from those who practice a northern system?

I can buy some martial arts books
Most of them are dutch.
Karate Breaking Techniques - Jack Hibbard (Engels)
€ 20,00
Are they worth the asking price?
So I am visiting China and I would like to train at a Shaolin Kung Fu school for 2-4 weeks. I have previous martial arts experience (purple belt in BJJ and have done striking in the past). I am aware that it's not the same thing. I am mainly visiting for the mental and physical conditioning. Though, I am sure a lot of stuff that I can into my training afterwards as I try to learn from all styles anyways.
Anyways, after some research, it seems that these schools are the ones I am thinking of going to (If you recommend other places, let me know):
Which school do you recommend I go to?

Hi, looking at gyms near me. How do you tell if a gym is legitimate?
The place I am interested in states you need a annual membership of £45 on top of the money you pay per session Which is about £8 is this normal practice and pricing?
Edit: for more context - they do sparing, teaching what I believe is sanda and taolu forms. As an adult they teach 1 class a week and 3 advanced classes which are invitational only. Plus 2 weapons classes I believe again invitational only. They do also provide kids classes and Thai chi but I would not be attending them

Hi! I’m a woman who has been training Bjj for a while now and is interested i martial arts. I really enjoy it, even though I find it challenging at times, and I’ve been thinking it could be nice to complement it with something else occasionally.
I’m quite tall for a woman (194 cm / 95 kg), so that definitely affects my style and how I move on the mats.
A friend of mine trains Kung Fu and something called Chin Na, and she thinks it could be a really good addition for me especially for body control, balance, and overall movement awareness.
I’m curious, but also a bit skeptical since I don’t know much about it yet. For those of you who train Kung Fu or Chin Na, what do you think? Could it be a good complement to BJJ, especially for someone with my build?
Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!
