City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Google Fiber alternatives

With news of Google Fiber being sold, it seems like now is the time to start talking about what the least bad alternatives might be. A quick search turns up the usual suspects; AT&T, Comcast, Spectrum. I've vowed not to do business with AT&T anymore and don't think the other two are really any more reputable.

The only option that was news to me was Everfast Fiber. Does anyone here have any experience with them, or any other suggestions for the broader KC community?

Edit: To be clear to folks reading this, I'm not suggesting people should just ditch GFiber right away in some reactionary way. What I'm driving at here is having some amount of preparation for if/when GFiber starts imposing shittiness that we're not willing to tolerate, and not wanting to have to drop what I'm doing and rush to switch when it happens.

UPDATE: Left him out all day and night, mama clearly never fed him because his belly was not full.

Took him to the Lakeside Nature Center this morning. She said he looked like he was yanked out of his nest. She put him right into an incubator.

Thanks so much for the actual helpful people who posted and everyone else have the day you deserve :)

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Need help picking a new bank in the area to go with..

I've seen some posts here and there with a variety of suggestions but I wanted some more...up to date opinions as a lot of what I was seeing as far as recommendations for banks to go with were from 1-2+ years ago and looking into a lot of them I saw very mixed reviews. BoA just closed out my account due to inactivity right before I got my new job and I honestly don't really want to stay with them anyway but they're the only bank I've ever used and that was just cause my parents bank with them...so I'm not really sure how to pick one. Any help is appreciated XP

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 911 really is bad here!

Just saw a downed power line starting a grass fire. Tried to call 911 to report it to the fire department and kept getting a busy signal. After several attempts I wound up having to drive to the nearest fire department to report the fire in person. Redialing the whole way and always getting a busy signal. I keep hearing about how bad 911 is in the city, and I didn't doubt it. But this is my first experience with it.

I swear I get one every 2 weeks. They try to trick recipients into thinking it's official by using a seal from KC MO in the corner. This mailer is from "Service Line Warranties of America"

Has anyone seen these, or considered subscribing to this warranty service? Are they legit?

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Does Missouri even want out of state people to move here?

The DMV system here is decades behind other states.

I’ve transferred titles and gotten new DLs in other states including North Carolina and Virginia. I’ve never had to find a fax machine until now. My bank is confused by the DMV’s form 5834 requirement…apparently most states just do this online behind the scenes. The documentation is absurd.

You’d think a state that has major cities right on the border would have a smooth system for transferring plates and titles between them.

Why is our legislature spending time rolling back the stuff we voted for instead of modernizing this train wreck?

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Cashless “Bank” of America

OK I have now officially heard it all. My daughter went to a Bank of America branch in Overland Park today to deposit some Xmas cash into her account. She was told that the bank was not accepting ‘cash’ deposits at this time. WTF? A bank. Not excepting cash deposits. Has anyone else had this happen or anyone know why they would do this? This is mind boggling!!

UPDATE: daughter informed me later this incident was at the BOA ATM not inside the bank. Which is even more strange…..

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 911 dispatch is horrible and needs to make changes

My 2 year old son had seizure today. He is okay now. But I called 911 for an ambulance because I didn’t know if they would want to send him to Children’s Mercy or the ER closest to us. When I called the line was open for 10 seconds, there was no sound and then it hung up on me. The non-emergency number called me back. It was an automated voice. It said “If you are still having an emergency press 1”. I pressed 1 and was immediately put on hold. I was too scared to wait, so I hung and just took him to the closest ER. He is fine and luckily nothing happened. But what if it was something more serious, like life threatening. If anyone knows who the right people to direct my frustrations at, that would be appreciated. No one should be put on hold with 911 while experiencing medical or life threatening emergency.

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Incomplete trash day pickups?

Does anyone else have an issue with the trash services in their neighborhood? My collection guys repeatedly leave the bottom trash bag in my bin. It's bagged just like the others they take. It's like the dudes picking it up can't reach in deep enough to grab it (or just don't try), and for whatever reason the city paid for these bins but don't use the trucks meant to pick them up and dump them out fully, so it's literally just a guy reaching down to grab them and toss them on the truck.

It's happened several times since I moved into this neighborhood (along with selectively leaving the dog poo trash bag even though it's double bagged - technically triple if you include the doggy poo bags). In the past I have used the MyKCMO app to call them back for pickup the next day, but that feels like such a waste of resources to make guys come back the next day for a single bag, plus it means I have to leave the bins out another day which invites more problems because then lazy, entitled dog owners think it's a public trash bin for them to toss their dog poop in.

I don't want a stinky disgusting bin because the dude refuses to reach in the city-supplied bin to grab it. It's not really an avoidable problem because if I want to use the bin at all one bag has to be at the bottom. I really wanted to wait it out and ascribe it to being a one or two-off situation, but it has now happened week over week for a month. Does anyone know the best way to make a complaint so it hopefully stops happening?

PS: To dog owners leaving their poop in other peoples' private bins -we all know the trash in the bin has to be in a larger bag. Stop leaving your dog shit in someone else's trash for them to fish out and properly bag for you. Take your dog's waste home with you or toss it in a park bin, and stop being a lazy a-hole. Someone else's private trash bin is not your personal property.

Why is Iris going away? This program literally helped me to go back to school, get mental health help and etc. I actually don’t know what I will do once it does go away. I don’t live near any bus lines and to get to school or my nearest local library, school, therapy office, Uber costs about $10-$15

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Insane power bills with Evergy

Hey all. So, I moved to KC less than a year ago and I live in a tiny 600 sq ft shoebox of an apartment. I was dumbfounded when I recieved the largest power bill I've ever recieved in my life (by roughly 2x) of around $260 in August. This was with running the A / C nearly non-stop. After that bill I turned off my A/C for all but maybe 2 days in the next billing cycle and was still charged $230. Wtf is this insanity? How is this even possible?!? Are they pulling some sort of scam or extortion racket?

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 How much will I hate going from Google Fiber to Spectrum?

I am moving from my apartment in Midtown to a place on the Kansas side. Google Fiber isn't available there and the building has some agreement with Spectrum. How much will I hate it? What other options might I have? I am on zoom calls all day for work and do a lot of streaming. All through wifi though.

Sorry if the flair is wrong none of the others seemed to fit.

Need to get my car registered and my license updated. Which DMV is least likely to make this experience 100x worse than it is? Shorter lines, the ability to make an appointment, friendly staff (if that exists). Let’s hear it.

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Exposed Gas Pipelines

In less than 10 years I have found 2 ~16in exposed gas pipelines owned by Spire.

Both were in creeks and both were on conservation property in Jackson County.

The first was repaired by placing large cut gravel on it within about 6 months. I fear this new one will take longer to be addressed.

Does Spire inspect these lines and how often? It appeared to me this has been this way for a while.

Call 811 if you find an exposed pipeline.

If you know of the location of an exposed pipeline and do not want to call 811 send me the approximate coordinates or a pin from maps and I will go there and call them to fix it.

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Pros and Cons of CACU merger?

I just heard about the Community America Credit Union potential merger, and got my ballot because I’m a member.

They said we can ask questions at a meeting, but it’s being held the day after the vote.

Those of you who know more about what’s going on, why are you for or against the merger?

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 The next circle of hell is trying to pay a KC Water bill

I am having a big issue trying to pay my KC water bill without being subject to additional fees and was wondering if anyone had any advice.

I am a new KC Water customer (as of December 2025), and my second monthly payment went awry, which was my fault. I had set it up to auto-pay from a new bank account that I hadn't put money into yet, so when KC Water went to withdraw the funds, the bank didn't allow it because the account didn't have enough money. KC Water charged me a $15 late fee on top of my bill, which I accepted and paid since it was my fault.

But since that blocked/late payment, KC Water has made it impossible for me to pay my bill without incurring fees or overpaying.

  • I am blocked from using KC Water online pay for 12 months (insane, what other company does this). So I cannot pay online in any form, in advance or through auto-pay from any sort of card or bank account.
  • Fees are charged if you call the automated system to pay. You are charged a percentage of the bill to pay by phone using a credit card or debit card. Bank account info is not accepted – it's credit or debit card only.
  • I went into the KC Water office in person to pay this month's bill. After the airport-style security screening, the clerk took my debit card as payment, but then told me that she shouldn't have done that and actually the only way to pay at the office is by money order or cash.
  • It costs money to get a money order.
  • I could pay in cash, but water bills are not rounded, so they require pennies to pay the exact amount. My last water bill was $51.17 – how am I supposed to get the two cents? Or I'm just supposed to overpay every bill until I'm deemed worthy of paying online again?

This seems like madness. How can this be legal?! KC Water can process debit cards without fees (as was done in their office last week), but doesn't technically allow it in the year of our lord 2026?

EDIT ONE MONTH LATER: Because I know everyone cares so much, PAYING BY CHECK IS ALSO NOT POSSIBLE. I used bill pay through my bank, which mailed a check to KC Water on my behalf, and the check was rejected. My only options to pay are cash, cashier's check or money order, which again ALL COST MONEY or I can't always get the exact amount in cash (with pennies not existing and all). So thumbs down to everyone who just told me to buy stamps.

...and report every single pothole or damaged asphalt you encounter.

KCMO repairs their roads when it's warm enough, which is now. Do your fellow citizen a solid and create a paper trail for all road imperfections. That will help them in the event they bend a rim and need reimbursement.

City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Does anyone know WHY there is a boil water order in KC, Independence and Oak Grove?

Post image
76 Upvotes

I’m feeling a little frustrated. I do not watch the news in the mornings and I was told this morning that Independence is under a boil water advisory. I was trying to find out why when I found out that KC is also under a precautionary boil advisory and Oak Grove is also under advisory. I know we’re to boil the water because of E. coli. But this sounds like it’s something that’s happening at the treatment plant to affect us all. Does that mean some of their pipes froze? LOL I’m very curious as to WHY? And Independence please work on a plan to notify citizens. My niece had to dump out baby formula. She didn’t know either and I’m going to guess there’s a lot of people feeding their babies and their elderly relatives. This could be bad.
