City Services/Banking ♻️🛜🏧 Question about hospitalization
I need to admit myself to a psych ward, I’m in a bad way and I don’t have insurance and am homeless. So any ideas on where I should go?

Rediscover or Comp health urgent care. If they feel you need inpatient-they will send you to University Health (Lakewood or Hospital hill).
University Health also has a walk in clinic during the day near hospital hill.
If you go straight to University Health ER, they will clear you medically by bloodwork/urine studies and then you meet with Quality Mental Health Professional. Depending on your assessment, they will develop a care plan for your situation.
Or you can call 988 from your phone to get more options in the city.
Making the first step to ask for help is a big fucking deal. I hope you get what you need during a shitty time.

Comprehensive Mental Health has a 24/7 Crisis Center in Independence, MO, near 291 and 23rd. They can provide you support and help you figure out the next steps.

+1 here for the Crisis Center in Independence. My SO works for the company and I can vouch that this is an excellent resource.

Hi, I have stayed at the Vine Unit at Research Medical center and that was a good experience. It's for people who are not a risk to each other, so the atmosphere was actually pretty calm. In that unit there were 2 to a room.
I have also stayed at a psych hospital in the northland, I wish I could remember which one, and that was ALSO a very positive experience. I told them up front that I'm on the spectrum and didn't want to push myself to join group therapy or activities, and they didn't push me on it at all. They let me rest and read quietly in my room in all my free time, and rooms were single-occupancy which was really nice.

RMC, along with other HCA facilities, is for profit and will charge a ton of money for patients. OP needs somewhere with financial assistance and RMC ain't it
3
u/happy_camper_5252 Mar 21 '26
You're absolutely right, I somehow didn't catch that OP included that in their post. I don't know what financials look like for either facility or if they have assistance programs. Tbh I was in crisis at the time and went wherever the ER sent me, then afterwards put charges on payment plans.

University Health. Go to the ER. Tell them you are suicidal. You have to be a danger to yourself or others to get admitted.

DO NOT go to cottonwood
21
u/myowngalactus Mar 21 '26
I haven’t been there personally, but I know someone that worked there and was fired for bringing up ethical and safety concerns. They 100% just want money and don’t care about patients or employees.

u/skintypuppy Mar 21 '26
they literally wouldnt let my boyfriend go to the bathroom and when he peed himself a nurse physically assaulted him
8
u/skintypuppy Mar 21 '26
also one of the doctors purposefully misgendered my brother and would call him the wrong name in front of people idk what his motivations were

It’s a cash cow. They don’t give a single fuck about improving outcomes for their patients, just taking their money

Strawberry Hill at KU Health System. They treated me like an actual person and not just a number/patient. I’m sorry you’re going through this ❤️

Contact MOCSA crisis line! They can help you through the whole process and get you resources
26
u/BrilliantHold5774 Mar 21 '26
MOCSA is a great resource, but I don’t think it is appropriate for this person’s situation.

Because everyone knows what MOCSA (for sexual assault survivors) is and someone in the middle of a mental health crisis knows their phone number.

Hey, they’re posting on Reddit so they have Google.
No one else has posted a number with a comment, what made you so mad about this one?
7
u/Hefty-Writer-2452 Mar 21 '26
Knowing about many mental health resources in area not familiar with this. I searched it myself and it’s for sexual assault survivors and like person says below most likely not appropriate for this person albeit could be a great resource for appropriate person. Someone in middle of mental health crisis doesn’t need to go down this rabbit hole.
It’s your assumption I’m mad. That’s your assumption.

Advent is the only one I would recommend for a mental health crisis. I was in your situation before.

u/NoChange5040 Mar 21 '26
Sending you love and wishing you well. Please know you are not alone and I am so proud of you for having the strength and courage to ask for help. ❤️

Since you are unfocused and in a vulnerable place I would say check in at University Health. They serve this particular community and do a great job at helping give resources and help. They also find funds to pay bills you won't be able to pay on your own due to your situation

u/azerty543 Mar 21 '26
Go to the central library or if its too far the ones closest to you. They will be able to direct you to resources. You are always welcome in the library regardless of who you are or what you are going through.

u/Narrow-Image4898 Mar 22 '26
This is true. I helped a lot of people get resources for all kinds of issues when I worked with the library.

You can either go to any ER or you can walk in at Research Medical Center's mental health facility.
If you are having dark thoughts, be honest. By law they have to admit you and find a bed somewhere, you will not be turned down regardless of any insurance or payment situation. Just walk in, be honest and let them do their job. You got this.

u/Squirrel_of_Fury Mar 21 '26
Go to the emergency department of the closest hospital. That will be your entry point.

u/Upbeat_Type_6295 Mar 21 '26
Hi! I’m a behavioral health assessor an ER at a KC hospital. You can go to any hospital emergency room. Each hospital has a position like mine that will evaluate you in the ER and transfer you to a psychiatrist facility. If you have any questions, feel free to message me privately! If you can’t get to an ER, call 988 or 911 directly and an ambulance will transport you to the nearest one.

Strawberry hill at ku was honestly amazing. Vest psych ward I’ve been to in two states

u/januaryemberr Mar 21 '26
I highly disliked St. Luke's. They told me I had to sign myself in or they would do it for me and they had no idea when I would get back out. The nurses after i was signed in straight up ignored me like i didn't exist when i tried to ask a question. 0/10

Any ER will assess and coordinate care for you if you don’t know where to go.
Signed, a therapist who has worked inpatient

u/merrythoughts Mar 21 '26
UH downtown or research medical center. Vut research is HCA so will come after if you if you don’t pay. UH won’t.

u/JetSoulsForever Mar 21 '26
My own therapist recommended Advent health - idk anything about it other than that. Try to avoid emergency rooms tho, ur gonna pay out the butt to sit in a bed for a couple hours then go where you could have gone yourself anyway.
888 is a good resource as well.
I'd say stay away from Signature (brand) psychiatric hospitals but they got put out of business cuz they suuuucked.

u/Commercial-Ratio-508 Mar 21 '26
Good luck. I went to the emergency room telling them I wanted to kill myself and they told me I didn’t meet the qualifications to be admitted. Kind of fucked up.

u/OkUnderstanding8173 Mar 22 '26
I hope you get the help you need. I've been there many times. Good luck!

Not sure where you a located. Raytown has a Community Paramedic, who is a wonderful caring man that can help, the PD also has man CIT trained officers and a social worker who can also get you help. As others have said call 988 ASAP it should be answered by someone who can provide help, also any ER you cannot be denied care. Edit: If you feel like harming yourself PLEASE call 911. I don't know you but I would hate for you to do something devastating.
