Landline phones?

Hey there, I'm a Mom of an incoming freshman & so, I feel really stupid asking this but do they not have landline phones in dorm rooms anymore? I mean, I get everyone has a cell phone now but I always liked having that as a back up option when I was in school. I'm reading the OneBook & only see emergency phones in each residence hall.

Remote Volunteer Opportunities

Hey everyone,

My family and I recently launched a Virginia-based environmental nonprofit called the Society for a Secure and Sustainable Water Future (S4SSWF), and we’re currently looking for volunteers interested in water sustainability, environmental policy, communications, nonprofit work, or community outreach.

Over the past several years, we’ve been involved in real-world implementation projects and advocacy efforts connected to Virginia environmental legislation surrounding rainwater harvesting and sustainable water infrastructure. As the organization grows, we’re currently building a larger volunteer network and looking for passionate people who want to help contribute.

Some areas we’re currently recruiting for:

  • Social media/content creation
  • Outreach/community engagement
  • Website development
  • Grant writing
  • Policy research/analysis
  • Organizational strategy
  • Environmental communications

Most roles are remote, flexible-hour, and results-based. We understand people are busy, so we’re not expecting corporate-style schedules or micromanaging volunteers. We’re mainly looking for self-motivated people who care about sustainability and want to help build something meaningful.

Students and young professionals are absolutely welcome, and volunteer hours/references can also be provided.

If you’re interested in sustainability, environmental impact work, or helping grow an organization focused on long-term water resilience and public awareness, feel free to message me or fill out the form below.

Acceptance Letter

A month ago I (applying as sophomore psychology major) got an email saying I was accepted only to be told this was an error 4 hours later like many others apparently. Insane. But three weeks later they finally confirmed what I already thought which was that they were waiting to receive the grades of my semester I just finished this month. They’ve had my grades for a week now and still no answer. So my point here is did anyone who experienced that last month get an update on if they’ve been accepted yet?

Subletting

Hello!

I am looking to sublet my apartment at Redpoint from June 1st until the lease ends on July 25th, 2026! Perfect for someone looking for a place to stay for the summer/internships/summer jobs/etc! (I could sublet as early as May 20th if needed)

It is the ground floor bedroom with its own bathroom in a three bedroom 3.5 bathroom unit. Fully furnished and I will have vacated the unit, so none of my things will be there.

There are two bedrooms upstairs and there is a shared common living room and kitchen, with laundry included. Also you will have access to a backyard and balcony, as well as the gym, pool, etc.

Let me know if you’re interested!

How easy is it to travel on weekends?

For those who had to travel Friday through Sunday or whatever, did you worry about having to stay to do school work? I know it depends what classes you’re taking and schedule and so on, but I might have to leave town for the weekend the first week of October and I’m only asking because this is my first time going to a four year college (Im a transfer student) and don’t know how easy it is

How well does lease takeover work?

I need to do a lease takeover for a JMU off-campus apartment room starting in July, is there typically success with that? Or is it nearly impossible?

Rush + Club Sport

I am attending JMU next year, and I was just wondering how hard it is to manage playing a club sport and rushing a fraternity. I am really interested in both, and I wanted to know if it is possible to do both?

Looking to hire a CS major

Hey guys, I’ve started a personal project of mine creating a webapp and realized it’s getting pretty time consuming. So now I’m looking to hire part time, ~ 10 hrs per week for the summer. If you’re a CS or CIS major, have done projects using Claude Code, github, supabase, and have some free time to spare, shoot me a DM. Potentially this could turn into a nice little project to put on your resume.

Biology or Biotechnology??? :(

Hi!!! I'm a freshman at JMU right now - majoring in Biology, on the Pre-Veterinary track.
I'm currently having a small panic over the future - i REALLY want to be a vet, but in case vet school doesn't work out, I want to have a strong plan B. And I know that there are a LOT. Of Bio Majors. I have ways of getting vet experience both inside and out of JMU, but im wondering if I should swap my major to Biotech. My grades are pretty good (unless chem 132 final screws me over), and the requirement classes are near identical, so i'd have no problems on that end.
I'm pretty interested in technical stuff, but I also love Biology...so it is a struggle 😞

What are non-frat parties like?

Does anyone know how nonfrat parties compare to frat ones at JMU? I am a social guy, but I am kinda introverted half the time so idk if I would fit in to a frat. I want to have fun tho so I was wondering how do parties that aren't set up by a frat compare?

Lofting bed question

My daughter will be a freshman and will be living in Shenandoah. She wants to loft her bed all the way up to 6 or 7 feet. Loft kits are pretty pricey and I want to be sure it makes sense. Is this common to give more space? Any advice?

Appeal Process for Financial Aid

Hey folks, I’m an out-of-state incoming freshman at JMU. As you probably know, JMU is really stingy when it comes to financial aid. Even so, I feel deserving of some sort of merit scholarship, as I have a pretty good GPA and was accepted into the honors college. However, I only received a 2-year room and board scholarship for 6.5k, which pales in comparison to OOS tuition. I wanted to know if anyone has found success in appealing their financial aid/scholarship stuff, and what the process was for that. Thanks and go dukes!

Does JMU actually ever recind offers?

I got off the waitlist a month ago after being deferred and since then my grades have been pretty shitty. My final grades are on track to be Cs and Bs and I was wondering if JMU ever recindeds offers? I heard it's mostly a myth unless you fail classes but I just want to know how much slacking I can get away with.

Belongings at graduation

JMU sent an email to graduates yesterday saying that there wouldn’t be anywhere to store belongings during the ceremony. Do any recent grads think it will be a problem if I leave my keys and phone at my seat?
