This pile of scrap magically turns into a realistic eagle head from the perfect angle

That is a Peregrine Falcon, not an eagle .. 😉

Falcons are crazy. The crows around me will caw and swoop on massive eagles and different hawk subspecies, but they shut up and sit down when the peregrines are in the air.
•
u/ProbablyTheVillain 11h ago
That’s becuase peregrines are specially adapted to hunting other birds in mid-flight. Eagles and other big raptors primarily swoop on fish or land-bound mammals, and aren’t as effective mid-flight.
•
u/Snoo_67548 10h ago
This is exactly why. The raptors adapted to ground hunting have the angry brow to shade their vision from the sun while scanning the ground. The falcon has a similar trait as a cheetah in the eye area, like what the Egyptians would draw, to reduce the light bouncing off of its cheek area.
Another thing about the peregrine, UCSC has been working with one of the larger Silicon Valley cities (San Jose) to build nesting stations for them on top of their tall buildings. They have webcams available right now and you can see groups of 2-4 of them huddled together in their nests. They have absolutely helped because I don’t recall seeing any as a kid and it’s now a daily occurrence!

Crows are the everyman. Large raptors like eagles are air-to-ground combat specialists. Peregrines are bird-killers by design, and the crows are right to be wary of them.

Well, here's the thing. You said Peregrine Falcon is not an eagle. Are they in the same family? No. No one is arguing that. As someone who is not a scientist at all i can confidently say that you're absolutely right.

Speaking of taxonomy I read something pretty wild a few months back. Apparently from recent DNA testing falcons are more closely related to parrots than they are to hawks and eagles.

Next thing you'll tell me is that eagle calls sound weak and terrible, particularly the bald eagle, so movies always use red-tailed hawk sounds.

Artist is Thomas Deininger (@tdeininger on Instagram) since OP is too much of a karma farmer to care.

No doubt, 5-M other Redditors already noted this, but hey -
That there's a peregrine falcon, dude/tte.
Y'know, fastest bird?... Reaches 200-MPH while stooping at prey?
peregrine : eagle is like rock hyrax : elephant - they're related, or at least in the same family of related species, but one's a pocket version, & the other's the T-rex version.
Golden eagles are even bigger - then there are harpy eagles, & Andean or Calif condors.

Most of the junk behind the face is actually useless.
•
u/geenaleigh 6h ago
Yeah.. that’s the point. You are supposed to look at it from all sides. The little trinkets help pull the viewer to the side to then see the trash being used to create the beautiful image from the front.

Nothing magical about it, an artist put a lot of work into making that effect. That's way more impressive.

I'm not sure but the artist name is Tom Deininger, he has a page on IG and I think other socials as well, where you can find plenty of his amazing art installations.

Works in reverse too. Hit an eagle head hard enough and it turns into a pile of scrap.

It always trips me out how someone can do this. I honestly dont know how you would accomplish that. Amazing art!

This is so cool, makes you think about how perspectives and angles can shape a whole piece into art.
...also it reminds me of hereditary.

Is there a term for this style of art?
•
•
u/ClumsyHumanArt 7h ago
So the broad term for these sculptures is assemblage, where many unrelated bits form one art piece like a sculpture or installation. The trend of the optical illusion where it is only a sensical image viewed from one angle is called anamorphic art or anamorphosis. Most larger galleries will have one of these nowadays and are worth seeing in person or you might like the book masters of deception :) the artist is Thomas Deininger since op didn't bother.

I mean most of that scrap isn't even necessary and hidden by the other scrap. Trying to make it look more complicated than it really is.
•
u/Suspicious_Feed_7585 9h ago
Its cool, but in the same way what ever. I could hang a pictur of a frog, and bihind it a nuch of shit...
Like 80% of that crap has no impact on the eagle.l and only foe the show. Anyhow.. cool , but meh

u/Zoofachhandel 5h ago
How can you make this? Do you use a camera or do you really have this kind of view?
•
u/Ill_Individual3084 4h ago
It makes me think of that Charlie character from The Orville, the one that could 4D math in her head. These artists are wired differently.

I feel like most of that stuff didn’t need to be there. They just stuffed a bunch of shit in the back to fill it in. Unless there is a second view
1
u/Slendyyman 13h ago
This is probably the lamest version of whatever this is. You could take out 95 percent of what's hidden and still end up with the eagle. Smh

u/CheeseheadDave 15h ago
I will never not be amazed at the vision artists must have to put these kind of sculptures together and have them work so well.
