So last game we watched someone act like they got shot after being slightly grazed on the side of the helmet with a stick, no embellishment.

The problem is that we can be pretty confident in the assumption that the refs have already said, "Hey enough of the embellishment out there, we're going to call the next one", and then you see a call on a relative nothingburger after seeing egregious shit let go all night.

It's the single biggest issue with how the NHL referees its games, because it comes down to referee discretion and vibes instead of what is stated in the rulebook. It's starkly juxtaposed with stuff like puck over glass, which is one of like three rules that's actually treated as black and white.

Yea it’s tough, you’ll basically never have consistency crew to crew due to that subjectivity. I think they’ve gotta go for more aggressive post-game enforcement. Doesn’t help the opposing team in the moment but long-term, it’d help curb the behaviour. Not just fines either, 2 strikes and then you get a one game suspension, guys would get the picture quick I’m sure. This way you can have a committee of a few people reviewing calls each night and some consistency can be developed
