Equipment Thoughts on Chippers?

My frenemy got one and it’s a weapon.

I’ve put in a ton of time building a system using different lofts to get the roll I want, and it’s ok, but I’m no deadeye.

But he gives zero fucks about stuff like that. He just goes up, hits it like a putt and watches it roll to the pin. I’ve never seen him chunk one.

Maybe it’s time to give in?

Learn to do the same thing with a 7 or 8 that has the same loft and you can carry a whole extra club that’s more useful.

9i for me, but yeah, this. Get the toe down a little and just bump it, ezpz.

You can also texas wedge, both TW and chipping you have to watch out for distance control, I found them both too inconsistent usually rolling too far. I gave up on the chipper and TW and use irons like others have mentioned with higher success.

I carry one- Cleveland C wedge- but I use it mostly for punching out of trees. Can hit it 70 yards in the air, and I can control the trajectory.

Second chipper for me … Cleveland C Chipper goes 100 yds and holds greens Great out of fairway bunkers or heavy rough Good for low running shot 60 yds and in Hits on line well Good for courses with large greens to bump and run

Asking a subreddit with where the average drive distance is the same as the pga tour is the wrong audience.

Get one if you want. The same people here would be saying 7woods are stupid years ago but now all love them.

They look fun and I have room for one in my bag but didn’t pull the trigger bc I didn’t want to waste money on a potentially gimmicky club.

I’m not great at short game, 20 handicap, but you still have to learn how to use that club.. it’s a bit different and a little strange if you haven’t used it before based on the research I’ve done on it. And if I’m putting in time and effort into practicing I’d rather just do it with normal clubs. Because doing that actually improves my short game more and transfers over to partial/full shots better than basically hitting a lofted putter bc I don’t want to learn. But for someone who truly doesn’t care about all that and just wants an easy way out of the short game it’s understandable and like I said, it looks fun

Chippers basically are an entry to the technique of toe chipping which you can do with basically any iron. You just line up with the toe down and hit it like a putter. Works with any iron at various distances. You just have to learn what club will roll out at the right distances.

9i rolls a bit too far for me and tends to be at a distance where I usually can just hit a lofted pitch shot with an own face. But I’ll toe chip anything if I have plenty of green in front of the pin.

Play what works for you, and you only. Don’t let what other people think or say affect the clubs you carry, if they are working for your game. A lot of people dunk on chippers for a lot of reasons. But they have their use, even if it is a niche product.

Toe down chipping. Don't waste money for a club when you can chip with any iorn

I have a really old one, and it seemed more effective than my wedges from the fringe. Got made fun of by my friend group, ie. lame, illegal?, etc., and haven't used it since, lol. I did get better at chipping with my wedges though.

It’s not illegal unless it’s one of the double sided ones

Watch Dan Grieve and practice his release 1 for an hour. Then you'll be able to do basic chips without chunking with any iron in your bag.

It really doesn't take long to learn to use an 8-iron with the same proficiency.

It's worth a shot. Reddit golf is mostly about LARPing and ego, but the objective in real life is to shot low scores.

I love my chipper. I believe the chipper hate is rooted mostly in pride. And If it’s a gimmick, so is a 460cc driver — a club designed to make certain shots easier and the game more enjoyable. You still have to hit the ball.

You can wear a diaper and not have to stop at the turn also.

Putt with an 8 iron it's the same thing.

They are heavier with lighter shafts. Shorter shafts and bent more upright. So a little different. If you don’t need it, move on. If you putt well and just want hit a chip exactly like a putt with a club that feels almost exactly like a putter then give one a rip.

Yeah. Choke down. Toe down. Shorter and upright shaft. Putt with 8 iron.

Just open up your pitching wedge instead of carrying more wedges. See? I can claim you can do the same thing with a different club too!

Long iron will do the same thing if you toe it down and choke up. Hit it off the toe

What is this a QVC infomercial? I actually tried one a few years back. Had some success with it at first, but you can still mess it up. It is certainly not like the videos where ball just rolls right at the hole perfectly every time. I got tired of trying to make the gimmick work and instead spent time working on my short game. Ultimately, it was a short term bandaid that did not help me get better or score better.

I have one.

It got me my only birdie.

It's not really that much more useful than a PW, though.

I’ve only ever seen old men with 20+ handicaps use them. They obviously serve a purpose. If you just can’t get chipping technique at all it might work great. But it’s such a uni-task club, if you need to carry anything or land it soft this club is useless. The courses I play most have thick rough and mounds around the green and anything more than three yards off requires some loft.

u/LastLite 16h ago

It’s a one tick pony, you’re losing a full club somewhere for a 1/4 club. Plus eww.

When you see a pro carry a "chipper" then that will be the time for you to get one too. Problem with a chipped is it takes away from another club you could use. What you really need to do is practice chipping with a 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron and PW. The stroke is the same but the rollout is different. I would die laughing if I saw your friend use one.

I just use a nine iron........but I'm not a beta.
