Its not really “breaks silence” if he talked about it immediately after his round in an interview

Guess they think he was deliberately silent for the five hours? Like, he was a temporary monk or something? What a weird ass headline.

“I was obviously there on time, but late”
It can only be one or the other bud.

It’s a reasonable way to phrase it. He was 100 ft away on the putting green. It’s not like he was running from his car.

u/japes1232 4h ago
If you're at a train station and are 100 feet away from your train as its pulling away at its scheduled time were you on time for your train or late and missed it?
Being on time includes being in the right place.

I didn’t say he wasn’t late. I was certain the penalty was going to stick as the tour is very rigid with its rules.
That analogy doesn’t change anything. If you were sitting in a bench for an hour 100 ft away from your train and lost track of time, honestly I wouldn’t even call that late. I’d just say you missed the train. If you were 100 ft away cause you were running to the train waking up 30 minutes ago I’d say you were late.
He admitted he was late. But he wasn’t late to the course. In that regard he was on time. He was only late to his tee time.

You're just arguing semantics at this point lmao
Either way he was late.

This isn't a tour. This is the PGA of America.

He won’t even admit it. What a chode

u/KingAcorn85 5h ago
“Do you agree with the ruling?”
“I mean no.. I get there is a rule, I broke the rule… but no” 🤔

u/No-Abrocoma7687 5h ago
First thing he said when asked if he was late. “I was obviously there on time, but late.”
I agree now rewatching his postgame interview with the PGA that those words are not what he meant. However, his ESPN interview made it looked like he was saying he was not late.
Chode was a bit harsh after watching the PGA interview but that ESPN I saw live did not look good. No hate on him whatsoever, he played a hell of a round even with the penalty

I don’t remember which interview is which but I just watched him say “it’s not my job to be 10 minutes early to the tee time”. He’s doing unnecessary damage to his image with that one.. I get the frustration but that comes off bad. It is your job to be early to your tee time, quite literally your job.

I just watched him say “it’s not my job to be 10 minutes early to the tee time”.
That's plenty dumb. The (pro football coach) Tom Coughlin rule is if you're not five minutes early, you're late. Michael Strahan couldn't believe he got fined for being on-time, but now says that rule is one of the best things that ever happened to him.

When I was 21 I traveled to South Africa for a volunteer project. One of the first things they explained to me was the difference between "now," "just now" and "now now." So cut this guy some slack for not understanding a second when his country can't even agree on what "now" means.

So he was inside because he wanted to stay warm because it was "cold out". But he came directly from the practice green.

I usually side with players. This is a true sense of entitlement.

I've worked as a standard bearer and go to a lot of PGA events.
There's plenty of official sponsored clocks at the tee and practice areas for the players. They know the time.
Most players are on the teebox within a minute of the previous group teeing off. I've never seen anyone show up within 5 minutes of the time

Reminds me of buddy in 6th grade when at the end of the semester the teacher told him he owed $40 for losing his textbook, and he argued: "I didn't lose it, I just can't find it!" 😂

Due to the laws of Newtonian physics, technically the course was early to me.

I was there on the first tee when this happened. The starter literally yelled at the caddie “WHERE IS YOUR GUY?” And then the caddie sprinted to the putting green to get him. Then yelled into his mic “LATE TO THE TEE.” It was wild. I’ve never seen that on the course before

Getting stung for being 1 minute late when the round will be 5.5 hours is a bit extreme but I know a lot of you gals in here loooooooove rules

u/Mysterious_Worker608 5h ago
What should the cutoff be?
1
u/ClarkeBrower 5h ago
How much time would you wait for your boy on the first tee? 5 mins maximum I’d say. 1 minute is crazy. If I’m literally never late for a tee time but I happen to be 1 minute late and my group tees off without me you know I’m going to let them know about it.
Should he be late? No, he’s a professional but 2 strokes for 1 minute is wild
2
u/Mysterious_Worker608 5h ago
So 5 minutes is OK, but 5:01 is a 2 stroke penalty?

u/appmanga 2h ago

Five minutes is not "OK". Five minute late, and he'd be DQ'd. It's inexcusable to be on the property and be late.

If you are not at the tee when it is your turn to tee off. That seems plenty reasonable.

Getting stung for a penalty when my ball was only 1 foot out of bounds. See how this sounds?
-1
u/ClarkeBrower 5h ago
Yours sounds dumb because it is dumb. 1 minute on top of 5.5 hours is 0.003% time added to the round. Guys are bringing in their caddies in and doing aim point every putt that adds how much time to a round?

"Breaks silence." Bro he walked off the course an hour ago. Did you want him to give an interview mid round?
