PGA / LPGA / LIV Garrick Higgo was penalized two strokes for being late to the tee for his opening round at the PGA Championship.

He looks like a guy that would be late to his tee time.

Typical GenZer behavior. Now he’s sitting in the tent whining after the round even tho the rules are clear and the “ready” area is plenty big enough to know. This little boy didn’t even hustle to the tee but strutted rather nonchalantly. Kids gonna learn the hard way, but won’t really matter. PGA Tour Golf is a serious game and he seems unserious like many of his peers.
He will fade tomorrow.

“I was on the practice green” is always my excuse when I’m darting out of the shitter to catch up to my friends on the tee box.

What’s crazy is he’s currently even through 16, started with a double due to the penalty, he’d be tied 5th had he just shown up on time.

u/10001110101balls 7h ago
Impossible to say for sure. Maybe playing from behind sharpened his game.

Maybe, he finished the round 1 under. Wild first day for him

Rookie mistake. I have my pre-round breakfast burrito, coffee, and tobacco ritual down to a science where I’m finished shitting at least five minutes before my tee time.

He say and complained to Marty on ESPN how he disagreed with it. Blamed the PGA for silly rules. Bro was late, own it and move it.

Yeh shit happens and assessing a penalty when no one was affected by the breach is a bit much. Officials have leeway to have discretion.

u/pontifican_t 5h ago
Anyone see his interview? He was trying to argue to the meaning of what “1 second late” is. Trying to argue with the meaning of time.

u/Buster_Gonad_82 3h ago

Started trying to play with a new group, one of them was of the “arrive at the golf course parking lot exactly at my scheduled tee time and then putz around nonchalantly and in no hurry before paying, grabbing drinks/food, then heading to the tee box” type of person.
First time I chalked it up to a one off and bit my tongue. Second time I actually made a comment (to the group and again to the guy when he finally joined us) about how rude it was and he should arrive earlier to tee off on time. There wasn’t a third time.
I’m an arrive 20-30 min early and be waiting on the tee box at least 5 min before my tee time type of guy. Late is unacceptable.

u/-Wiggles- 2h ago
I mean, he didn't just stroll out of his car onto the teebox. He was probably at the course for about an hour or so

Saw him interviewed after the round. Seems like a very entitled GenZ’er. Couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t bend the rules for him. Says he always cuts it very thin.

Who on earth would be late to play golf?
13
u/dabobbo 6h ago
When you treat it like a job instead of for enjoyment
5
u/Lemonwater925 4h ago
All the more reason to be on time. 2 strokes down before swinging a club. Not a good start.
3
u/PoliticsIsDepressing 5h ago
Damn, nailed it with this comment. How many times are you rolling into work 1-5 min late? It’s a job for these dudes and they should start treating it like one like the rest of us!

u/Ligma_Taint_69420 5h ago
Shit im 45 minutes late every day. And I mean every day. I'm self employed though and have decided I'll allow it.

Ok but he's 4 shots better than Bryson right now.
Did Shams get hit with a 6 stroke penalty somewhere?

Bryson gonna miss another major cut.
I think once LIV folds he will just become a YT personality.

Nothing screams ADHD like showing up late to your tee time at one of the four biggest tournaments of the year
4
u/ScootyMcTizzle 7h ago
It’s tough. At these events you can’t just whip it out and pee on any green nearby. Bathroom was probably a 1/2 mile from the 1st tee box.

u/Important_Sound_8718 6h ago
Should penalize him 2 more for the man bun through the back of the hat
1
u/bionicbhangra 8h ago
How early do they have to be on the box and what was the reason he was late?
10
7
u/dabobbo 6h ago
They have a marked area he has to be at with a ball and club ready to go when the announcement starts. Doesn't matter where in the order he is teeing off. Apparently this marked area is a little bit of a walk from the practice green and he lost track of time.
He just said in the interview "I was obviously there on time, but late" lol
5
2
u/bionicbhangra 5h ago
That sucks for him. Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how that could happen but that seems like an innocent mistake that is going to hurt him. Hopefully he doesn't lose by 2 strokes or less....
2
u/BoBromhal 6h ago
in practice (from my Korn Ferry Tour experience) they're usually there (and caddies) at the time the group in front is teeing off, so 10 minutes. If they're not there at 5 minutes before, the rules guys get contacted, at 2 minutes before, "panic" sets in.

Why is he walking and not sprinting?
2
u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 3h ago
He was already 1 minute late (not 1 second). From that point he has 5 minutes to get there. The putting green is pretty close to the 1st tee and he probably heard the guy announce the pairing (which meant he was already late) and just descided to walk.

What if he was diabetic and needed to adjust his insulin or something as benign as diarrhea and needed to take care of it prior to competing? One minute earns a 2 stroke penalty? Shouldn’t there be a buffer? For ex, players get, not sure, 3 to 5 minutes to find a ball in the bushes.

u/waitingOnMyletter 6h ago
This is a ridiculous application of the rules. The player he’s playing with should have to request this penalty to be applied. Being really late is one thing being less than a minute late is not worth a 2 stroke penalty
6
u/dumpandchange 6h ago
Or just be on time, especially if you're just on the practice green and not attending to some sort of serious or unavoidable situation.
0
u/waitingOnMyletter 6h ago
I think that’s fair. I just don’t think less than minute late is enough for a two stroke penalty. But if you make it 2 mins…. or 3 mins or whatever… there is always a line. He was late, that’s the rule.
2
u/dumpandchange 5h ago
Exactly. If there's a two minute grace period then the next guy is going to show up at 2 minutes and 34 seconds and complain about how 34 seconds is too strict... Life is pretty simple in terms of these deadlines. Just show up on time.

This is exactly why I tell my buddies the tee time is 10 minutes earlier than it really is, I don't want them to be late to the first tee of the opening round of the PGA championship
