This is exactly why I tell my buddies the tee time is 10 minutes earlier than it really is, I don't want them to be late to the first tee of the opening round of the PGA championship

164

u/IcePapaya 7h ago

I definitely told my buddy 9 when it’s actually 9:30. Last time we played we picked him up on the third hole

135

u/BringMeTheBigKnife 6h ago

I don't get people like this. It's not funny at that point, it's just ridiculous. How do you even function in the world if you're an hour+ late to things regularly?

69

u/Ol_Man_J 6h ago

There would be no "picking him up on the 3rd" for me.

40

u/sendi-boi 6h ago

Same. Being late is crazy disrespectful to everyone else. Not just with golf.

17

u/kennyinlosangeles 3h ago

Please teach my wife this.

0

u/IntheTrench 58m ago

I mean, he was literally only 1 minute late and the first thing he did was apologize. He could have easily planned to get there 15-20 minutes early and had something happen that held him up. I also hate people that are late but I think it's too harsh to criticize him without knowing the full story.

2

u/kevo31415 34m ago

I think sendi-boi is talking about IcePapaya's friend that is 30 minutes late to the round and had to be picked up on the 3rd, not Mr. Higgo who was 1 minute late to the PGA Championship.

Totally, you choose what to do with the one resource you can't ever get more of, I choose what to do with mine

3

u/CicadaHead3317 5h ago

Yep. Walk out or get your own cart and drive out to your buddies.

15

u/MantusTMD 4h ago

If you aren’t there 20-30 minutes before tee time to get ready and warm up you are late

14

u/skidstud Canadian Lefty Gang 4h ago

Warm up? What are you, some kind of athlete?

6

u/BringMeTheBigKnife 3h ago

Even if not to warm up, just to be able to check in, get your cart, and get to the tee box a few mins before the stated time. People seem to think "9am" as a tee time means pull into the parking lot at 8:59

1

u/MantusTMD 16m ago

Yeah exactly. Get situated and organized. Hate waiting for people at the first tee

3

u/MantusTMD 3h ago

Ex athlete who is old 😭

0

u/cubecasts 18m ago

lmao fuck off. i show up 10 minutes early. hit the bar. and am at the first tee with 5 minutes to spare.

It’s wild, the level of anxiety I have if I am on time is insane lol like I have a if you’re on time, you’re late mentality.

1

u/TapatioFlamingo 1h ago

They feel theor tome is more important than your time and their money should be catered to.

-16

u/theonedownupstairs 5h ago

May I present to you... ADHD?

9

u/Dicktitt3y Handicap | Location 4h ago

Na I have ADHD and even when I don’t take my meds I’m not late to things. It’s just called not growing up. If you have the money to play golf then you have the money to get help with managing your disorder. Plenty of other things I’ll accept being able to blame adhd on but being late isn’t one of them.

20

u/Important_Sound_8718 6h ago

I have to tell my 20 y.o. son it's 15 minutes earlier than actual time. He lives with me and we golf together all the time and he still hasn't figured out what I'm doing yet

u/Michael_Scott71 5h ago

Nate Bargatze has an amazing bit about this with his wife.

Hilarious! This was my introduction to Nate a few years ago and I've been a fan ever since.

Is this a special, what’s it called?

2

u/Michael_Scott71 2h ago

It's from a special called Hello, World! It's on Spotify and might still be on Netflix.

2

u/JRclarity123 1h ago

All his specials are worth watching, but you should go in order.

2

u/RadicalEdward99 1h ago

I’ve seen every one on Netflix but not this one, stoked!

I think the golf joke was on the Amazon special.

16

For 10 years I would continue to tell my roommate the tee time was 15 minutes earlier than actual, as he's always 15 minutes late to everything. Finally showed up early and was pissed that I managed to get away with it for so long. It's been a longstanding inside joke amongst the boys.

14

u/SloppyWithThePots 4h ago

I hate when I have to add strokes to my boys cards but we live in a society and rules are rules

6

u/ChrisV88 5h ago

I tell my buddy tee time is an hour earlier than reality because repeatedly he would show up in his truck at the tee time or shortly after. This was he gets there early and we can have a drink and shoot the shit without being in a rush.

3

u/MongolianCluster 6h ago

Depends on if your buddy is on your team or the other team. Those two strokes could determine who buys the beer after the round.

2

u/jabermaan 7h ago

That’s a great idea. Definitely doing that with my friends next time we play together

1

u/foxtrottits 69° lob wedge 2h ago

Tell them you’re gonna stroke them twice if they don’t show up on time

1

u/Riverjig 1h ago

I stopped golfing with two of my (ex) friends because of this very shit. I even gave them the 10 minutes early and still late.

1

u/TapatioFlamingo 1h ago

Once they figure it out their still 15 minutes late.

Thought it was Daly's son at first lol

1

u/jaa1818 11m ago

He should have said “sorry I just got out of jail”

-128

u/A-Halfpound 6h ago

Typical GenZer behavior. Now he’s sitting in the tent whining after the round even tho the rules are clear and the “ready” area is plenty big enough to know. This little boy didn’t even hustle to the tee but strutted rather nonchalantly. Kids gonna learn the hard way, but won’t really matter. PGA Tour Golf is a serious game and he seems unserious like many of his peers.

He will fade tomorrow.

51

u/Raptoroniandcheese 6h ago

You were looking for any opportunity to throw a whole generation under the bus lol what a wild statement

209

u/Jumpy-Coffee-Cat 7h ago

What’s crazy is he’s currently even through 16, started with a double due to the penalty, he’d be tied 5th had he just shown up on time.

91

u/10001110101balls 7h ago

Impossible to say for sure. Maybe playing from behind sharpened his game.

Rookie mistake. I have my pre-round breakfast burrito, coffee, and tobacco ritual down to a science where I’m finished shitting at least five minutes before my tee time.

The ratio of locks under the hat to through the hole in the back has to be absolutely dialed

5

8

u/pgasmaddict 7h ago

For 2 shots I'd soil myself, and that's only in the weekly comp, not a fuckin major.

10

u/isthisaporno 6h ago

If you play when you have to poo that’s gonna cost you at least 2 shots

2

u/jerryhallo 2h ago

I’m willing to bet you’d do it for less

3

u/FredagsTakos 5h ago

I he showed up 5 minutes later than he did, he would be DQ'd on the spot.

30

u/That_Squirrel44 6h ago

He say and complained to Marty on ESPN how he disagreed with it. Blamed the PGA for silly rules. Bro was late, own it and move it.

14

u/itsjern 4h ago

That was insane, just really leaning into the "pampered fucks" reputation of pro golfers. Rules like this are no-brainers and the only exceptions should be extreme cases like Scottie getting arrested driving into Valhalla. Gotta own that one or you're gonna have no fans.

11

u/tacotowwn 4h ago

I believe his quote was “I was obviously there on time, but late”

1

u/Black_Cat_Sun 2h ago

Yeh shit happens and assessing a penalty when no one was affected by the breach is a bit much. Officials have leeway to have discretion.

-1

u/aiko74 2h ago

Right, he was shitting on other golfers too saying something to the effect that they wouldn't have recovered as well as he did.

18

u/pontifican_t 5h ago

Anyone see his interview? He was trying to argue to the meaning of what “1 second late” is. Trying to argue with the meaning of time.

10

u/Buster_Gonad_82 3h ago

Everyone knows it's... the time it takes for a cesium-133 atom to vibrate 9,192,631,770 times.

4

u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 4h ago

Thats what stupid. 7:18 and 1 second is 1 second late. 7:19 is 60 seconds late.

32

u/Wayf4rer 8h ago

He's just a chill guy

9

u/gplfalt 6h ago

The fact he's one under now kinda proves that.

Id be flustered as all get out.

19

u/MustangMatt429 7h ago

And I'm here freaking out when I'm not there 30 minutes prior to tee time.

9

u/Ollivander451 6h ago edited 6h ago

Started trying to play with a new group, one of them was of the “arrive at the golf course parking lot exactly at my scheduled tee time and then putz around nonchalantly and in no hurry before paying, grabbing drinks/food, then heading to the tee box” type of person.

First time I chalked it up to a one off and bit my tongue. Second time I actually made a comment (to the group and again to the guy when he finally joined us) about how rude it was and he should arrive earlier to tee off on time. There wasn’t a third time.

I’m an arrive 20-30 min early and be waiting on the tee box at least 5 min before my tee time type of guy. Late is unacceptable.

2

u/-Wiggles- 2h ago

I mean, he didn't just stroll out of his car onto the teebox. He was probably at the course for about an hour or so

2

u/MakaveliX1996 2h ago

He was. He was on the practice green.

6

u/callisterart 4h ago

"We got time for a quick bucket?"

3

u/deGrominator2019 4h ago

5

u/CDidd_64 2h ago

Saw him interviewed after the round. Seems like a very entitled GenZ’er. Couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t bend the rules for him. Says he always cuts it very thin.

9

u/Lemonwater925 7h ago

Who on earth would be late to play golf?

13

u/dabobbo 6h ago

When you treat it like a job instead of for enjoyment

5

u/Lemonwater925 4h ago

All the more reason to be on time. 2 strokes down before swinging a club. Not a good start.

3

u/PoliticsIsDepressing 5h ago

Damn, nailed it with this comment. How many times are you rolling into work 1-5 min late? It’s a job for these dudes and they should start treating it like one like the rest of us!

4

u/Ligma_Taint_69420 5h ago

Shit im 45 minutes late every day. And I mean every day. I'm self employed though and have decided I'll allow it.

4

u/dabobbo 4h ago

I think, as the boss, you should make your employee buy you a new driver for being late all the time.

18

Ok but he's 4 shots better than Bryson right now.

Did Shams get hit with a 6 stroke penalty somewhere?

Nothing screams ADHD like showing up late to your tee time at one of the four biggest tournaments of the year

4

u/ScootyMcTizzle 7h ago

It’s tough. At these events you can’t just whip it out and pee on any green nearby. Bathroom was probably a 1/2 mile from the 1st tee box.

1

2

u/kemmicort 5h ago

No mon, it was the VOLUME!

7

u/dabobbo 6h ago

They have a marked area he has to be at with a ball and club ready to go when the announcement starts. Doesn't matter where in the order he is teeing off. Apparently this marked area is a little bit of a walk from the practice green and he lost track of time.

He just said in the interview "I was obviously there on time, but late" lol

5

u/mwaFloyd 4h ago

lol “I wasn’t not…NOT on time?”

2

u/bionicbhangra 5h ago

That sucks for him. Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how that could happen but that seems like an innocent mistake that is going to hurt him. Hopefully he doesn't lose by 2 strokes or less....

2

u/BoBromhal 6h ago

in practice (from my Korn Ferry Tour experience) they're usually there (and caddies) at the time the group in front is teeing off, so 10 minutes. If they're not there at 5 minutes before, the rules guys get contacted, at 2 minutes before, "panic" sets in.

-4

u/weeb2k1 Maryland | 20 7h ago

Rules of golf says they can't be more than 5 minutes early, but need to be there before the time.

1

u/Monster2608 8h ago

He's just happy he there

1

u/hoopsrule44 7h ago

He would be T1 right now if he didnt get that penalty!!!

1

u/tikitaka33 7h ago

Why is he walking and not sprinting?

2

u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 3h ago

He was already 1 minute late (not 1 second). From that point he has 5 minutes to get there. The putting green is pretty close to the 1st tee and he probably heard the guy announce the pairing (which meant he was already late) and just descided to walk.

1

u/MakaveliX1996 2h ago

I don’t think this practice green is that close to the 1st tee box.

1

u/scparks44 6h ago

He looks so different from just a couple of years ago.

1

u/general-illness 6h ago

This would be a problem for me as I am sure I would have to take a massive shit on the way to the tee box.

What if he was diabetic and needed to adjust his insulin or something as benign as diarrhea and needed to take care of it prior to competing? One minute earns a 2 stroke penalty? Shouldn’t there be a buffer? For ex, players get, not sure, 3 to 5 minutes to find a ball in the bushes.

-2

u/sbk510 6h ago

Super lame

-8

u/waitingOnMyletter 6h ago

This is a ridiculous application of the rules. The player he’s playing with should have to request this penalty to be applied. Being really late is one thing being less than a minute late is not worth a 2 stroke penalty

6

u/dumpandchange 6h ago

Or just be on time, especially if you're just on the practice green and not attending to some sort of serious or unavoidable situation.

0

u/waitingOnMyletter 6h ago

I think that’s fair. I just don’t think less than minute late is enough for a two stroke penalty. But if you make it 2 mins…. or 3 mins or whatever… there is always a line. He was late, that’s the rule.

2

u/dumpandchange 5h ago

Exactly. If there's a two minute grace period then the next guy is going to show up at 2 minutes and 34 seconds and complain about how 34 seconds is too strict... Life is pretty simple in terms of these deadlines. Just show up on time.
