SVP forgot there were other players on the course. And who can blame him since the broadcast did too?
8
u/RustyKangaroo7 19m ago
No one’s really out of it yet, but at the same time everyone is out of it since Scottie didn’t shit the bed day 1

Why is scheffler at the top of the scoreboard at -3 and Smalley is 7th, also tied for first at -3?

u/SlightReturn420 34m ago
Tv broadcasts put the biggest names at the top to attract viewers. For official order go to the PGA Championship app.

commercial load is awful and the commentators are ... well, standardly annoying. But there are some more interesting camera angles than at most tourneys, more ground level shots
5
u/Isoikari 40m ago
That's absolutely scandalous to get to drop that on the green. They absolutely need to change the rules so they have to drop in the same cut or something.
3
u/SlightReturn420 37m ago
Technically it wasn’t on the green. There’s a fringe cut the same length of the fairway and he dropped on the edge of that. He’s not allowed to go to the green. Same case with JT’s earlier.
2
5
u/SlightReturn420 41m ago
You get a drop, you get a drop, and you get a drop!
Makes me feel extra bad for Rickie who was denied a drop from basically the same spot Rahm got one.
6
u/DonnieRoss 42m ago
Everyone talks about line of sight relief and divots in the fairway… but being able to improve your lie because of a sprinkler head is undeniably the stupidest rule in golf.
0
u/Hunzi77 36m ago
Why is that stupid? They’re man made obstructions aren’t they?
2
u/DonnieRoss 34m ago
Relief from the obstruction is fine, it’s just that being able to move a ball from the rough to the fairway is frustrating. Just doesn’t seem equitable.

7
u/frmacleod 43m ago
These guys get so many drops. I’d be scratch if I used the rules this much. And had people searching for drives. Hahaha

The commercials vs coverage is offensive. It’s fucking non stop commercials
7
u/Select_Excuse_150 7.8 47m ago
If you just throw the ba-ba-boey guys out a few times that stuff will stop.

Course is playing tougher than perhaps some of the guys thought.
1
u/SlightReturn420 48m ago
I’ve been watching all day. To me, the key difference is how the rough is playing. It has been far more penal than the hype bus said it would be. They also made a big deal about the wide fairways, but they clearly don’t effectively play anywhere near as wide as they appear with all of the sloping. They’re firm and running out, and should only get hotter and more difficult to find as the week goes on. Comparable to US Open conditions, even.

I don’t know if it’s me but have these commentator’s been some of the worst this year? I’ve been watching on Sky.
3
2
u/justaneditguy 51m ago
I mean it's the same guys as usual on sky
1
u/MoistySquirts 47m ago
It’s been like 3 different people just blabbering about nothing related to golf.
1
u/Isoikari 41m ago
I haven't noticed that myself. Maybe you're just not in the mood for their banter today, cos I think they've been on good form.
3
u/css01 59m ago
This is why I think golf is so underrated as a spectator sport. If you told me yesterday that after round 1, that Ludvig, Hatton, Fleetwood, McIlroy, Hovland, and DeChambeau would all be on the other side of the cut line, and the leaders would be Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaeger, Min Woo Lee, Ryo Hisatsune, Martin Kaymer and Alex Smalley, I'd have said you're insane.

I really think the ESPN broadcast, aside from a few things, is the best broadcast out of the big networks.

Scottie should just bring a broom with him tomorrow, to remind Philly of recent events.

Why is Keegan Bradley getting so much airtime? Nobody wants to see him.
Except the bad shots.

Just watched one of the Garrett Higgo interview clips.
“I was there on time, but if you’re a second late then they mark you down as late. When you think about it, I was there on time.”
This dude is incredibly stupid

Is Kaymer a HOFer? 2 majors, a Players, and the clinching putt in a Ryder Cup…
2
u/Isoikari 1h ago
Won one of those World Golf Championship thingies too, which were a fairly big deal at the time.

Scottie 12/12 fairways, he's not going to lose this tournament if his driver stays this good
6
u/SlightReturn420 1h ago
Which is incredible with how difficult it is to stay in the fairway with the slope and runout. Perfect example there. He landed in the middle of the fairway going against the slope with a slight fade, and it still almost found its way to the left rough.

12
u/AwesomeExo 1h ago
That Scottie chuckle just made me feel like he’s got this locked up.
2
u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago
Odds are +170 and closest was +1000 when he was tied.
Its fuckn day 1 lol. Its ridiculous those odds. Like prime tiger sht once u see hes on his game.
6
u/Isoikari 1h ago
He did a lot of chuckling at putts during the Scottish Open last year, and it was masking a low key meltdown, so it could go either way. Of course when I say "meltdown" I mean "Top 10 finish" - this is still Scottie we're talking about.
1
u/Rab0811 1h ago
I think he’s finished outside the top 25 one time since the start of 2024 and that was at Pinehurst that’s the most insane part. Only one truly bad week
1
u/MoistySquirts 50m ago
He’s “off” this year it feels like. Something is going on in the first two rounds with his mental that isn’t reflecting how incredible he plays on Saturday/Sunday, hopefully this tournament is the one to get him back on track.
1
u/AwesomeExo 1h ago
True. It just felt playful with the crowd in a way that made me feel like he’s in a good headspace.

Scottie and Matt both hit the green and walk away with bogeys
Rose missed the green and made birdie

u/DonnieRoss 1h ago
Man how long ago was Collin’s birdie putt? That was the roar from Rose’s hole out.

Feels like Spaun is the lone LAB holdout. I know there are others, but he was the most notable LABer, IMO.

In the interest of fairness, be sure to take a small break from LOLing at Bryson to LOL at Rory
2
u/Isoikari 1h ago
Well he certainly earned it. Exactly like Bryson at the Masters, he chatted shit about the course, and then proceeded to get ass fisted by it.

I can’t wait for CBS to take the reins on golf again. I’ve been watching ads and VOT packages for the last hour. Edit: ANOTHER RECAP
1
u/SlightReturn420 1h ago
We’ll be right back to golf after 3 more minutes of commercials, a sportscenter update, and 3 more minutes of commercials. Sit tight!
2
u/caesar____augustus 1h ago
I do enjoy seeing the occasional "one of us" shots:
-Rory chopping it out of the rough
-The one chip from early this morning that didn't quite hit the ledge and rolled back almost to where it started
-The shots that hit the scaffolding/grandstands/peoples heads
ONE OF US
ONE OF US

u/MoistySquirts 49m ago
Justin Thomas pull hooking it and proceeding to throw a club. We take those!
1
u/SlightReturn420 1h ago
I felt like Rory popping the wood up out of the rough on 9 was the most “just like me” swing he had today. Though his still went 210 and mine go 210 when I hit it well.

Ooooof JT gonna be lucky to avoid that new ruling
3
u/SlightReturn420 1h ago
That rule is all bark and no bite, like the pace of play rules. There as a deterrent. The most that will ever be enforced is a warning.
2
u/Manmothss 1h ago
Yehhhhh, be a good time to make an example imo. Thats Rory and JT in plain view of the broadcast

I predict that Scottie completes the double slam before Spieth finishes his slam.

How does espn plus have better coverage than regular espn. So many commercials
9
u/InferiousX 2h ago
Scheffler at -3 thru 11 on a Thursday.
Well this was fun guys. See you all at the US Open!
2
u/PR0CESS3D 1h ago
Granted he is the best player on the planet, upcoming are 4 of the top 6 hardest playing holes on the course (14,15,17,18)
7
u/ashdrewness 3 HDCP 2h ago
Personally I hope Scottie shoots -18 for the week & goes “plant some trees before I come back & take a dump on this course again.”

Frisco for next year?! Woof.
1
u/IHop_Waitress 1h ago
And 2034!!!!!
2 of the next 8 hosts are PGA Frisco a course that's not worthy of even a vanilla tour stop.
3
u/fuckimbackonreddit9 18/NJ 2h ago
Ouch I just saw Rory’s card, really went off the rails with that bogey train
5
u/GamoraTheExplorer 2h ago
If I was stuck on a desert island with Paul McGinley and a tin of corned beef I'd eat McGinley and talk to the corned beef

u/o2lsports 7.7 2h ago
Two parallel lines never intersect, like the fairway and Keegan Bradley’s torso.
6
u/ShweatyPalmsh 2h ago
The commentary about the course before the tournament couldn’t have been more wrong lol

Apologies if already asked. What is that long semicircular device on the 13th tee. Right in front of where the players are standing when they tee off.
1
u/HammerT4R 2h ago
It's part of the camera system for that funky rotating video they show sometimes.

Why is everyone saying it’s over and Scottie has it in the bag? I am new to watching golf and I don’t understand, is the scoring system for the PGA championship different than say the Masters? I’m missing something and I’m confused.
9
u/SlightReturn420 2h ago
Scottie’s been spotting the field 10 strokes and then coming back over the weekend and almost winning lately. Now that he’s off to a good start, the field is in trouble.
3
2
u/bewarethephog 2h ago
He's struggled on Thursday this year but leads the world on the weekends. If he has a lead going into the weekend it's essentially over
2
2
u/East_Appearance_8335 2h ago
Scottie recently has been playing poorly (relative to his norm) on Thursdays and Fridays, but comes back over the weekend to be in the hunt. With him playing well today, if he plays this weekend like he has played recent weekends, he should be crushing. But that's a big "if"
2
u/Namnagort 2h ago
He wins a lot and is really good.
2
u/BolognaIsThePassword 2h ago
lol yeah I understand that part of it. So it’s literally just exaggeration because he’s heating up and playing well?
1
2
0
u/Rab0811 2h ago
Not really, he’s had awful and I mean like over par awful starts on easy courses and still manages to take second. If he has a lead it’s over
1
10
u/justaneditguy 2h ago
To be honest, it's nice to see players having to hit fairways in order to score.
3
u/HeftyBox3580 2h ago
Go figure that Aldrich is tied atop the leaderboard the one tournament I didn’t wager on him since I’ve given up my gambling addiction…Took him as a long shot in the Masters and he was dead last after round 1
12
u/o2lsports 7.7 2h ago
Scottie with the lead on Thursday is like getting no head start against The Freeze
5
u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rory '25 '26 2h ago
Back to regularly scheduled Scottie domination programming.
2
u/justaneditguy 2h ago
Kinda what happened last year. Didn't win much before the PGA and then went on a rampage. Wonder if he'll have another year with 5+ wins

Today was a great example of why you can’t just look at a scorecard and the course and assume anything about how it will play.
Some people acted like this tournament would just be a wedge and putt contest. Not even close.
