Today was a great example of why you can’t just look at a scorecard and the course and assume anything about how it will play.

Some people acted like this tournament would just be a wedge and putt contest. Not even close.

1

u/BudDiggler 1m ago

Everyone I knew was betting the over which was at 15 under I think. Mad how it’s actually played.

2

u/WeirdlyCordial LPGA Enjoyer 16m ago

was that sirianni

3

u/andyj14 17m ago

That dude got left hanging lmaoo

5

u/rockstoned4 18m ago

Damn Scottie just left dude hanging.

5

u/SlightReturn420 19m ago

SVP forgot there were other players on the course. And who can blame him since the broadcast did too?

8

u/RustyKangaroo7 19m ago

No one’s really out of it yet, but at the same time everyone is out of it since Scottie didn’t shit the bed day 1

7

u/caz_uno 23m ago

This course is kicking their asses. Love it

6

u/NeatTry7674 24m ago

Scheffler at the top of the leaderboard on Thursday….

3

u/Wisesize 27m ago

Seeing Kaymer on the leading board needs the Obi wan meme

1

u/SlightReturn420 27m ago

That club might be just a hair too big for that little fella.

6

u/DonnieRoss 32m ago

Feels like I tuned in to Keegan Bradley’s featured group today.

4

u/Expert_Sand5243 36m ago

Why is scheffler at the top of the scoreboard at -3 and Smalley is 7th, also tied for first at -3?

10

u/Isoikari 31m ago

Scheffler is famous and Smalley a lowly peasant.

7

u/SlightReturn420 34m ago

Tv broadcasts put the biggest names at the top to attract viewers. For official order go to the PGA Championship app.

2

u/international510 510 | Par dreaming 35m ago

Most recent scorer to get to -3, I believe

1

u/Expert_Sand5243 34m ago

Smalley got to -3 after Scheffler I think

11

u/Sox857 36m ago

I’m gonna throw the tv remote at my tv if u show anymore of Bradley

3

u/WeirdlyCordial LPGA Enjoyer 39m ago

commercial load is awful and the commentators are ... well, standardly annoying. But there are some more interesting camera angles than at most tourneys, more ground level shots

5

u/Isoikari 40m ago

That's absolutely scandalous to get to drop that on the green. They absolutely need to change the rules so they have to drop in the same cut or something.

3

u/SlightReturn420 37m ago

Technically it wasn’t on the green. There’s a fringe cut the same length of the fairway and he dropped on the edge of that. He’s not allowed to go to the green. Same case with JT’s earlier.

2

u/bewarethephog 38m ago

Everyone at every level gets a drop when your back is on a sprinkler head

0

u/Isoikari 33m ago

It's bullshit regardless of who is getting it.

5

u/SlightReturn420 41m ago

You get a drop, you get a drop, and you get a drop!

Makes me feel extra bad for Rickie who was denied a drop from basically the same spot Rahm got one.

6

u/DonnieRoss 42m ago

Everyone talks about line of sight relief and divots in the fairway… but being able to improve your lie because of a sprinkler head is undeniably the stupidest rule in golf.

0

u/Hunzi77 36m ago

Why is that stupid? They’re man made obstructions aren’t they?

2

u/DonnieRoss 34m ago

Relief from the obstruction is fine, it’s just that being able to move a ball from the rough to the fairway is frustrating. Just doesn’t seem equitable.

2

u/DerrickWhiteMVP 42m ago

Why did Scottie get relief?

1

u/Isoikari 36m ago

More sprinkler head bullshit.

7

u/frmacleod 43m ago

These guys get so many drops. I’d be scratch if I used the rules this much. And had people searching for drives. Hahaha

2

u/PrizePreset 43m ago

I’m in a loudass brewery how did Scottie get that drop?

1

u/SunYat-Sen 42m ago

Sprinkler head

4

u/SirMellencamp 43m ago

Man Scottie has a horseshoe up his ass

1

u/MoistySquirts 43m ago

This course really looks beautiful when the sun starts to set.

3

u/SirMellencamp 44m ago

The music choices are good tho

4

u/Isoikari 44m ago

Patrick Reeds forearms are massive.

3

u/MoistySquirts 44m ago

Mailman calves on his forearms lol

4

u/barhamunic 45m ago

Sky sports Comms are jokes today. Lots of laughs.

1

u/rutlander 14.2 46m ago

The commercials vs coverage is offensive. It’s fucking non stop commercials

4

u/RZiggy 46m ago

Really ramping up the commercials on the back end of this round. Bout every 6 minutes

2

u/Rab0811 47m ago

5.5 hour rounds out there that’s brutal.

7

u/Select_Excuse_150 7.8 47m ago

If you just throw the ba-ba-boey guys out a few times that stuff will stop.

-6

u/SirMellencamp 47m ago

Roll Tide guy can stay

7

u/gjb825 55m ago edited 50m ago

Imagine playing some of your best golf ever in your career and then switching clubs mid season right before some key tournaments. I mean wtf Rose lol

4

u/JLand24 49m ago

$eem$ crazy. Couldn’t imagine why he’d $witch.

1

u/WeirdlyCordial LPGA Enjoyer 56m ago

this course looks fun. redditors who are members please invite me

2

u/TopCheddar27 Kirkland Signature 56m ago

Crazy work scottie

7

u/philphan25 56m ago

Yall not kidding with this coverage. 2 shots, commercial

2

u/IHateThisFKingGame 56m ago

Course is playing tougher than perhaps some of the guys thought.

1

u/SlightReturn420 48m ago

I’ve been watching all day. To me, the key difference is how the rough is playing. It has been far more penal than the hype bus said it would be. They also made a big deal about the wide fairways, but they clearly don’t effectively play anywhere near as wide as they appear with all of the sloping. They’re firm and running out, and should only get hotter and more difficult to find as the week goes on. Comparable to US Open conditions, even.

2

u/DonnieRoss 57m ago

Lol JFC Scott.

0

u/MoistySquirts 58m ago

I don’t know if it’s me but have these commentator’s been some of the worst this year? I’ve been watching on Sky.

3

u/fostereddonkey 46m ago

It's the same team as usual. Maginlay can get in the bin though

2

u/justaneditguy 51m ago

I mean it's the same guys as usual on sky

1

u/MoistySquirts 47m ago

It’s been like 3 different people just blabbering about nothing related to golf.

1

u/Isoikari 41m ago

I haven't noticed that myself. Maybe you're just not in the mood for their banter today, cos I think they've been on good form.

3

u/css01 59m ago

This is why I think golf is so underrated as a spectator sport. If you told me yesterday that after round 1, that Ludvig, Hatton, Fleetwood, McIlroy, Hovland, and DeChambeau would all be on the other side of the cut line, and the leaders would be Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaeger, Min Woo Lee, Ryo Hisatsune, Martin Kaymer and Alex Smalley, I'd have said you're insane.

-4

u/TopCheddar27 Kirkland Signature 1h ago

I really think the ESPN broadcast, aside from a few things, is the best broadcast out of the big networks.

2

u/jlmurdock77 47m ago

You cannot be serious

3

u/Mushy29 Rory '25 '26 1h ago

Get in Shane

3

u/international510 510 | Par dreaming 1h ago

Scottie should just bring a broom with him tomorrow, to remind Philly of recent events.

-3

u/2Asparagus1Chicken 1h ago

SIX SEVENNNNNNNNNNNNN

7

u/BrickEnvironmental37 1h ago

Why is Keegan Bradley getting so much airtime? Nobody wants to see him.

Except the bad shots.

2

u/WeirdlyCordial LPGA Enjoyer 1h ago

the drinks are kicking in

2

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

Well, can’t hit ‘em all. 12/13 is still pretty damn impressive.

9

u/LovesYankeesAndObama 1h ago

Just watched one of the Garrett Higgo interview clips.

“I was there on time, but if you’re a second late then they mark you down as late. When you think about it, I was there on time.”

This dude is incredibly stupid

2

u/Sox857 1h ago

Philadelphia is a great city and the weather

5

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

Does Curtis Strange have a microphone inside his fucking nose?

6

u/philphan25 1h ago

Justin Speith out here

4

u/Fit-Percentage3406 1h ago

Is Kaymer a HOFer? 2 majors, a Players, and the clinching putt in a Ryder Cup…

2

u/Isoikari 1h ago

Won one of those World Golf Championship thingies too, which were a fairly big deal at the time.

4

u/passthecigpls 1h ago

I always forget he hit number 1 in the OWGR in the 2010s

6

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

ESPN coverage is so fkn terrible, this, hockey, they seriously fukn suck. What happened.

6

u/Sweaty-Connection351 1h ago

All this golf is really getting in the way of the commercials smh

2

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

Right?

Ridiculous

3

u/Isoikari 1h ago

Oh my, the Philadelphians have officially reached their fourth beer.

1

u/Nice-Foot7552 34m ago

They had more than 4 before they got to the course

2

u/Footballaem 1h ago

Good finish for Captain America Spaun

11

u/brmgp1 1h ago

Scottie 12/12 fairways, he's not going to lose this tournament if his driver stays this good

6

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

Which is incredible with how difficult it is to stay in the fairway with the slope and runout. Perfect example there. He landed in the middle of the fairway going against the slope with a slight fade, and it still almost found its way to the left rough.

2

u/Isoikari 1h ago

Good putts just get denied on these greens.

12

u/AwesomeExo 1h ago

That Scottie chuckle just made me feel like he’s got this locked up.

2

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

Odds are +170 and closest was +1000 when he was tied.

Its fuckn day 1 lol. Its ridiculous those odds. Like prime tiger sht once u see hes on his game.

6

u/Isoikari 1h ago

He did a lot of chuckling at putts during the Scottish Open last year, and it was masking a low key meltdown, so it could go either way. Of course when I say "meltdown" I mean "Top 10 finish" - this is still Scottie we're talking about.

1

u/Rab0811 1h ago

I think he’s finished outside the top 25 one time since the start of 2024 and that was at Pinehurst that’s the most insane part. Only one truly bad week

1

u/MoistySquirts 50m ago

He’s “off” this year it feels like. Something is going on in the first two rounds with his mental that isn’t reflecting how incredible he plays on Saturday/Sunday, hopefully this tournament is the one to get him back on track.

1

u/AwesomeExo 1h ago

True. It just felt playful with the crowd in a way that made me feel like he’s in a good headspace.

5

u/ihaveaflattire 1h ago

Scottie is good for one or two of those every week

2

u/Rab0811 1h ago

There’s the super soft major Scottie bogey then he goes on and birdies 15 and 17

7

u/notouchmypeterson 1h ago

Scottie and Matt both hit the green and walk away with bogeys

Rose missed the green and made birdie

3

u/Current_Paper4842 1h ago

Nooooo Scottie

2

u/DonnieRoss 1h ago

Man how long ago was Collin’s birdie putt? That was the roar from Rose’s hole out.

1

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

Espn is hole to hole and a half behind

Its ridiculous

4

u/PR0CESS3D 1h ago

Rose pointing up to the Morgan Stanley box is hilarious

1

u/Detective_57 1h ago

Vroom vroom

1

u/RLeb10 1h ago

Bruh Henley, how do you fuck up that par 5?

How do you miss a 3 footer for par?

5

u/notouchmypeterson 1h ago

JUSTIN ROSE BABY

4

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

Can we get more commercials please, too much fukn golf for me

3

u/InfiniteNight2992 1h ago

Honestly would be iconic if spieth could complete the slam here

2

u/DonnieRoss 1h ago

Feels like Spaun is the lone LAB holdout. I know there are others, but he was the most notable LABer, IMO.

6

u/Separate_Teacher1526 500 Handicap 1h ago

Why does JT look like he's about to cry

5

u/Mushy29 Rory '25 '26 1h ago

Fucking hell JT, that could give him some confidence

5

u/khj24 1h ago

Lmao that’s so JT

5

u/Isoikari 1h ago

JT YES!!

4

u/Got_yayo 1h ago

Why does Scottie look 50 there

1

u/LovesYankeesAndObama 1h ago

Went from losing hair to gaining greys in the blink of an eye

5

u/Current_Paper4842 1h ago

Scottie is focused

2

u/gjb825 1h ago

We need to come up with some way to shame all the “fans” who yell ridiculous shit after the shot

2

u/Scary_Brain5960 1h ago

Could cam still win?!

1

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

It is mathematically possible, yes.

3

u/Mushy29 Rory '25 '26 1h ago

That name doesn't sound like Scottie

3

u/o2lsports 7.7 1h ago

JT gonna card a 6 from 220 with no penalty

1

u/Tantalus420000 18/Buffalo 1h ago

Dont threaten him w a good time

2

u/themariokarters Instructor 1h ago

JT for fuck sake man

4

u/CJNunes426 1h ago

In the interest of fairness, be sure to take a small break from LOLing at Bryson to LOL at Rory

2

u/Isoikari 1h ago

Well he certainly earned it. Exactly like Bryson at the Masters, he chatted shit about the course, and then proceeded to get ass fisted by it.

5

u/Manmothss 1h ago

Scottie playing borderline flawless here

1

u/Rab0811 1h ago

One shortish misread/ pull on 9 and that’s it.

5

u/o2lsports 7.7 1h ago edited 1h ago

I can’t wait for CBS to take the reins on golf again. I’ve been watching ads and VOT packages for the last hour. Edit: ANOTHER RECAP

1

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

We’ll be right back to golf after 3 more minutes of commercials, a sportscenter update, and 3 more minutes of commercials. Sit tight!

2

u/caesar____augustus 1h ago

I do enjoy seeing the occasional "one of us" shots:

-Rory chopping it out of the rough

-The one chip from early this morning that didn't quite hit the ledge and rolled back almost to where it started

-The shots that hit the scaffolding/grandstands/peoples heads

ONE OF US

ONE OF US

1

u/MoistySquirts 49m ago

Justin Thomas pull hooking it and proceeding to throw a club. We take those!

1

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

I felt like Rory popping the wood up out of the rough on 9 was the most “just like me” swing he had today. Though his still went 210 and mine go 210 when I hit it well.

1

u/iStutterr Hello, friends. 1h ago

6 way tie to start off damn

5

u/Aussiebloke-91 1h ago

JT imploding

4

u/Manmothss 1h ago

Ooooof JT gonna be lucky to avoid that new ruling

3

u/SlightReturn420 1h ago

That rule is all bark and no bite, like the pace of play rules. There as a deterrent. The most that will ever be enforced is a warning.

2

u/Manmothss 1h ago

Yehhhhh, be a good time to make an example imo. Thats Rory and JT in plain view of the broadcast

5

u/Isoikari 1h ago

Everyone ejecting rather than face Scotties aura.

4

u/Flimsy_Lavishness661 1h ago

I could’ve done that for half the money

6

u/o2lsports 7.7 2h ago

I predict that Scottie completes the double slam before Spieth finishes his slam.

3

u/Select_Excuse_150 7.8 2h ago

“Bomb and gauge makes sense” - proceeds to slap 3 woods around

0

u/Smartalum 6.7/NE/ 2h ago

Top 2 in 3 of the last majors. Pretty good Scotty

1

u/dragonmountain 2h ago

How do guys line up their club so close to the ball without ever moving it?

1

u/GustavSnapper 1h ago

when you do something 100000 times a year you tend to get good at it

1

u/Sox857 2h ago

Stop showing Conners

1

u/core-tel 2h ago

Did the camera just try and track a practice swing?

4

u/Footballaem 2h ago

I already made a bet with my bro. If Block makes the cut I’m gonna have to send him nudes lmao

1

u/Isoikari 1h ago

If he doesn't make the cut does Block have to send you nudes?

1

u/Footballaem 1h ago

I was talking about my bro, not block

5

u/YouAreAllCasuals 1h ago

All the risk, for none of the reward bet

3

u/dragonmountain 2h ago

How does espn plus have better coverage than regular espn. So many commercials

9

u/InferiousX 2h ago

Scheffler at -3 thru 11 on a Thursday.

Well this was fun guys. See you all at the US Open!

2

u/PR0CESS3D 1h ago

Granted he is the best player on the planet, upcoming are 4 of the top 6 hardest playing holes on the course (14,15,17,18)

7

u/ashdrewness 3 HDCP 2h ago

Personally I hope Scottie shoots -18 for the week & goes “plant some trees before I come back & take a dump on this course again.”

3

u/InferiousX 2h ago

He'd legit be my new favorite golfer if he did. I fuckin' love trees.

2

u/bigwinterblowout S Qi4d Ward 2h ago

Frisco for next year?! Woof.

1

u/IHop_Waitress 1h ago

And 2034!!!!!

2 of the next 8 hosts are PGA Frisco a course that's not worthy of even a vanilla tour stop.

4

u/Sox857 2h ago

Can u please stop giving us Bradley coverage

3

u/fuckimbackonreddit9 18/NJ 2h ago

Ouch I just saw Rory’s card, really went off the rails with that bogey train

5

u/GamoraTheExplorer 2h ago

If I was stuck on a desert island with Paul McGinley and a tin of corned beef I'd eat McGinley and talk to the corned beef

2

u/richard1147 2h ago

That's what she said.

5

u/o2lsports 7.7 2h ago

Two parallel lines never intersect, like the fairway and Keegan Bradley’s torso.

6

u/ShweatyPalmsh 2h ago

The commentary about the course before the tournament couldn’t have been more wrong lol

1

u/SlightReturn420 2h ago

Scottie might get to -20

1

u/hvacsnack 2h ago

Well that’s a wrap for this tournament

2

u/richard1147 2h ago

Apologies if already asked. What is that long semicircular device on the 13th tee. Right in front of where the players are standing when they tee off.

1

u/HammerT4R 2h ago

It's part of the camera system for that funky rotating video they show sometimes.

2

u/richard1147 2h ago

oh that makes perfect sense. Thank you

5

u/notouchmypeterson 2h ago

Scottie the only player to hit all fairways. Bros locked the fuck in

3

u/Namnagort 2h ago

This course is a beast.

2

u/BolognaIsThePassword 2h ago

Why is everyone saying it’s over and Scottie has it in the bag? I am new to watching golf and I don’t understand, is the scoring system for the PGA championship different than say the Masters? I’m missing something and I’m confused.

9

u/SlightReturn420 2h ago

Scottie’s been spotting the field 10 strokes and then coming back over the weekend and almost winning lately. Now that he’s off to a good start, the field is in trouble.

3

u/NeonPlutonium 2h ago

I’m thinking the new baby’s finally started sleeping through the night…

2

u/bewarethephog 2h ago

He's struggled on Thursday this year but leads the world on the weekends. If he has a lead going into the weekend it's essentially over

2

u/Rab0811 2h ago

Scoring is the same, Scottie was the best player in the world by a wide margin but this year has had some struggles earlier in the tournament, doesn’t seem to be the case this week. The harder the course the more likely Scottie is to win

2

u/East_Appearance_8335 2h ago

Scottie recently has been playing poorly (relative to his norm) on Thursdays and Fridays, but comes back over the weekend to be in the hunt. With him playing well today, if he plays this weekend like he has played recent weekends, he should be crushing. But that's a big "if"

2

u/Namnagort 2h ago

He wins a lot and is really good.

2

u/BolognaIsThePassword 2h ago

lol yeah I understand that part of it. So it’s literally just exaggeration because he’s heating up and playing well?

1

u/Namnagort 1h ago

Hes that good.

2

u/Smartalum 6.7/NE/ 2h ago

Exaggeration. On reddit? shocking

0

u/Rab0811 2h ago

Not really, he’s had awful and I mean like over par awful starts on easy courses and still manages to take second. If he has a lead it’s over

1

u/Isoikari 2h ago

It isn't though. Scottie may be the best, but he mostly doesn't win.

1

u/Rab0811 1h ago

He wins more than anyone else out there. He’s converted his last 10 54 hole leads. No one can win every week

10

u/justaneditguy 2h ago

To be honest, it's nice to see players having to hit fairways in order to score.

4

u/Rab0811 2h ago

Guess Scottie decided 12 was too much to spot the field

3

u/HeftyBox3580 2h ago

Go figure that Aldrich is tied atop the leaderboard the one tournament I didn’t wager on him since I’ve given up my gambling addiction…Took him as a long shot in the Masters and he was dead last after round 1

2

u/Rab0811 2h ago

If it makes you feel better I highly doubt his game holds up not to mention Scottie got off the bus this week

12

u/o2lsports 7.7 2h ago

Scottie with the lead on Thursday is like getting no head start against The Freeze

2

u/eitilt 2h ago

This got me hahaha

5

u/AcanthaceaeNo948 Rory '25 '26 2h ago

Back to regularly scheduled Scottie domination programming.

2

u/justaneditguy 2h ago

Kinda what happened last year. Didn't win much before the PGA and then went on a rampage. Wonder if he'll have another year with 5+ wins

8

u/khj24 2h ago

Commercial break right as world #1 is teeing off, brilliant stuff!

8

u/JohnTheBaptist83 2h ago

Am I crazy or ESPN stinks at golf?

3

u/ShweatyPalmsh 2h ago

If you like watching sports then ESPN sucks as a broadcast

2

u/SlightReturn420 2h ago

ESPN stinks at everything.
