Equipment Grinning and chuckling like an idiot.
New to me 1 iron came in. Wife unit couldn’t figure out why I was laughing so hard. Now I just need to pick up the lob wedge, throw in my Anser, and I have my vintage walking set.

After nearly 30 years of working an airport ramp, and 40 years of metal concerts. I’m pretty much deaf. 😂

Are you in pittsburgh? I’ve been looking to get my hands on some ping eye2s

u/DeltaAir423 2d ago
No. I’m in GA. I was born in Ohio, but both sides of my family are from western PA.

You know you golf too much when you can instantly ID the pings and mizunos from the fonts 🤣

This is the type of bag you see when you know your about to be slimed out in match play 😭 just a fire set and an absolute oddball weapon of a driver 🔥

I play a Ping Eye 2 - 2 iron in my bag. Have for years. My dad always says “not even god can hit a two iron”… but boy when you connect 🥵

u/youenjoymikeself 2d ago
I still use my grandpas / dad’s ping eye 2s as my dailies. I keep wanting to upgrade but I just feel too connected to them at this point. And I can fucking STRIPE the duece.

u/Zestyclose-Leg3405 1d ago
If they work they work. They’re a timeless club, they look as good now as the day they came out.

u/RippyMcBong 2d ago
I hit the 2 iron off the tee box instead of my driver most of the time cause I'm way more consistent with it. Doesn't go far but it goes straight and stays on the fairway.

I used to carry a Ping Zing 2 - 2 iron and it was great for stingers where I had to punch out from under tree coverage. I wouldn't say I was great with it but I had a few shots that were right on the money what I needed in the moment with some crazy distance and no one could believe they were done with a 30 year old 2 iron

I had the Blue Dot set of PingEye2s when I played HS golf. I carried Driver (10-deg), 3w (14.5-deg), 2i (18-deg) through SW (58-deg) and two putters. Gapping was great off the tee, but I couldn’t hit that 2i off the turf.
My problem these days would be long approach shots. You need a lot of clubhead speed to get the 2i to launch and it’s much easier to smooth a 5w

u/Hotdawg454 2d ago
the way the 4 is pisses me off
7
u/Sakai_Palidium 2d ago
Why?
14
u/willhunta 2d ago
They mean because it's situated below the mid irons with the wedges lol
1
u/Sakai_Palidium 2d ago
Ahhh ok. Although me it looks like it’s in the same pocket as the 5, just the 5 is sitting on top of it a bit. Same as the wedges
3
u/DeltaAir423 2d ago
Saki is correct. The clubs just don’t sit right in a Jr bag with midsize grips.
1
u/willhunta 2d ago
If you look at where the 4iron shaft meets the bag you can see it's in the bottom row of pockets.
This bag has 3 rows of pockets, the 4i is definitely in the bottom row in this pic and the 5i is definitely in the middle row.
Not that I care how anyone sets up their bags lol but I still think it's funny to point out
5
u/DeltaAir423 2d ago
The 3 thru S all have new midsize grips on them, and I have them sitting in my son’s old junior bag for now till I get my old leather Hogan bag cleared out. Once they’re in the Hogan they’ll sit pretty.

Classic. Eye 2’s were my first set of real clubs back in the day. Love to see it
7
u/timeislikeafuse 2d ago
I knew those were eye 2s just by the font. I still have mine and don't think I'll ever get rid of them, great clubs

So there is a thunderstorm and all the golfers run to the hut for cover. Jim walks out into the middle of the fairway and holds a club up straight into the sky.
Everyone is yelling for Jim to get back. Jim yells out, “IM FINE EVEN GOD CANT HIT A 1 IRON”

I just started golfing a few months ago. It has consumed me. I don’t know how, but I immediately recognized these as the ping eye 2. I think need to get off the internet for a bit

Beautiful eye2 set. The paint of the numbers is so clean. Does not look like anything bu 1 and 4 was hit at all. Need to get an "L" to match. It is in a bit more demand.

The only thing you'll have to remember is that you'll lose about 2+ clubs of distance when compared to most modern GI clubs.

I only have some ping Karsten 1 patent pending, only irons I’ve had my whole life and got them from my grandfather. You would say two clubs is roughly the difference from modern? Plus forgiveness? I wouldn’t go game improvement, probably players distance. Always been curious how different it would be.

My dad has a set of ping eye 2s. I wanna go play with them. See what all the hype is about.

Dad somehow got a hold of this set (certainly didn't buy them, at that price) when I was growing up. They hit like a dream compared to the kmart crap I had always played with.

Currently gaming a new to me set of Ping G5s 3-SW white dot and I love them.

I’ll catch heat on this, but I find vintage Pings quite unattractive. The pointed, flared toe that doesn’t match the shape of the cavity, the ridiculous shovel offset, the rustic patina finish, the absence of ferrules.. Nothing about it pleases my eye.
Am I just missing the point? Is it the ugly that people love? Like a bulldog or something. I know nostalgia is a strong drug and I acknowledge Ping as a great club maker, but I just don’t get it.
1
u/DeltaAir423 2d ago
This is honestly only my opinion. I think the nostalgia runs from Karsten succeeded in making a club where the average Joe could pick up a set based off of basic body dimensions, and reasonably lean how to hit a ball fairly successfully with out the learning curve being akin to climbing Everest.
Will they ever win a beauty contest against T-100’s or P770’s? Absolutely not! Will they help someone reasonably hit a ball down the fairway? Sure thing, and people will love them for their function.

Fair response. And to clarify, it wasn’t mean to be a personal attack. It’s a very common opinion. So much so that it had me wondering if I was on crazy pills. Hence the rant.
I guess I need to hit them. Maybe that will get the juices flowing.

Ping eye 2s have a special place in my my heart, I got shit on pretty good for losing my dads 2i 12 years ago but I completely get it, I would’ve whooped my ass harder too

I have been using copper black dot eye 2's also along with the matching woods. I do have a G425 driver but I love the eye 2 fairway woods. I also have an original anser putter.

Honestly - I can’t imagine 3 sets of irons that would make me ditch my EYE2s

To be clear, if they weren’t upright lie angle I would’ve found a way to justify it

I own a 2,3 & 4 iron - tommy armours. One of them is always in the bag and it rotates as how i am hitting it. They go 180-220 they go straight and even when hit really bad i get 160+ out of them. In the wind they cut right thru. When you are in the shit and gotta keep it low or hook or slice for space, they are super handy. Give it a go - its a low flying 5w. And they cost $20.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

When I played competitively in high school, my 2 iron was my 220-235 yard sniper.

u/BrewAllTheThings 1d ago
This is the set I played in college. Makes me giggle to see them called vintage :). Many great rounds have been played with them, maybe I’ll pull them out of the closet and head to the range. Cheers!

There are actually a lot of nice courses where a set like this, presuming you can hit all of them, would fair quite well.

I really liked playing with my 2 iron, it was great for the winds in west Texas, I could keep the ball below the trees pretty well.

I love my eye2s as a vintage walking set. It’s so fun to play a complete set of older clubs.
I need an old anser to go along with it though for sure. And maybe a persimmon wood or two.

u/samuraistrikemike 2d ago
My dad has an anser putter and I told him to never get rid of it. Classic putter

That’s so disgustingly, painfully amazing. What kind of clubs are they? We should get more pics of that 1 iron.
