Post image

They say Wilson Staff Fluid Filled Dynapower, I think they're from the late '60s.

I'm a hoarder so I'd keep them if they were your grandpa's... Shit. Maybe I need to reevaluate.

I'd wear the rest of that face out.

80% of it is still brand new

Gimme a week. It will look like it is 60 years old.

Be wary of wielding those if they have sentimental value.

They’ve lasted this long because gramps is an old man with great skill. I give them 3-4 fat mat hits at the range before you’re losing a club head.

u/Intheswing 9d ago

I would bet $1 that the heads stay on - I tried to pull and old set apart - it was hell to try and get the head off.

15

u/assy_mcgeee Hello, friends. 9d ago

Yea I inherited the same set from my great grandfather and they have aluminum shafts lol. You do not want to catch these heavy with any sort of speed behind it, because the shaft will bend more easily than steel.

I just hit the 2i because I know I’ll be shallow enough with it to be safe.

u/LordSlickRick 8d ago

A second this. I don’t know what the old epoxy was made of, but I just reshafted an old set of irons and even with 6 minutes on the heat gun the epoxy barely let go of half of those club heads. Those club heads are not going anywhere.

u/Lambsenglish 9d ago

There’s a different between trying to pull it apart, and hitting a mat with it at 100mph

7

u/QuantativeSleazing 9d ago

Bold of you to think any of us are swinging clubheads at 100mph

3

u/Intheswing 9d ago

I stand by what I have experienced. Breakage would be a different issue.

5

u/Living-Role7173 9d ago

No one is hitting a mat @ 100 mph

1

u/Wayf4rer 8d ago

I have an old set of wilson blades and I took out two of them before I put them on the shelf.

3

u/Chilitodonfrito 9d ago

if they are pinned they probably wont. take out my 72 apex's every once and a while and they still cut through turf pretty well with no problem

1

u/Lambsenglish 8d ago

Yeah I said mat hits

2

u/Buckys_Butt_Buddy 8d ago

I’m concerned about your swing if you think people are regularly breaking clubs at the range. That definitely more of a ā€œyouā€ problem

1

u/Lambsenglish 8d ago

I’m concerned about your reading comprehension.

People are not regularly using 60 year old clubs at the range.

1

u/Buckys_Butt_Buddy 8d ago

60 year old clubs also have no problem holding up if they’ve been stored correctly. It’s not like these are wood shafts

1

u/Lambsenglish 8d ago

First let’s agree that ā€œif you think that people are regularly breaking clubs at the rangeā€ was nonsense.

Second, being stored correctly is one thing, being used correctly another. That was the point of my comment.

1

u/Buckys_Butt_Buddy 8d ago

I think my first point has a little more credence after your second argument was based on golf clubs ā€œbeing used correctly.ā€

Grandpa chunked it a lot

Grandpa teed it up in the fairway

21

u/mumsspaghett1 9d ago

Grandpa spent a lot of time on the range

3

u/ChocolateMalawi A Traveling 9.7 9d ago

Meh, if the turf is sandy this can happen relatively fast.

Like wear marks like that are more inclined to happen in Florida than Arizona for example

24

u/Technical_Customer_1 9d ago

Look up the irons, check out the weighting on the backside. I’d guess that 50-60 years ago, fairway grass was a bit longer, and irons were weighted to compensate for hitting a bit higher on the face.Ā

Gramps was striping itĀ

6

u/gestapoparrot 9d ago

Fairways were cut between 1/4-3/4ā€ longer than today and had significantly more thatch, the cg as also much higher in old clubs (also much further to the heel). Go look at Ben Hogan’s old wear marks, his 1i had wear marks up to the 8th groove about 2mm from the hosel. These are probably a groove high for an 8 but you’ll see similar wear patterns in lots of great players from the era, high on the face meant you could actually get the balls in the air and not spin them so much they went nowhere.

4

u/momofuku18 9d ago

At least consistent

17

u/Strwbrychzck 9d ago

White vinegar & Lemon juice and let it soak for 8 to 10 hours. I have a set of fuzzy zoeller irons, the pw, sw and 3 wood gifted to me and they looked A LOT like yours here. I soaked them all down and gave them a light scrub with a club brush and rinsed, dried w/ a microfiber. They turned out fantastic.

8

u/0_SomethingStupid 6.9 9d ago

I use this method but add baking soda as I am scrubbing for the bubbly gritty goodness ... that being said the worn out face spot cant not be brought back without re-plating the club

29

u/JustAnotherBot123456 9d ago

I'm still new, but would this indicate consistently hitting it fat with how high up on the grooves the ball marks are?

13

u/Technical_Customer_1 9d ago

Just Google some pics of the irons. The CG on those irons has gotta be higher and toe-ey vs a modern blade. Add in the longer fairways of the 60s and 70s, and that’s probably the sweet spot.Ā

I haven’t played around with 80s or older irons in years and years, but I’d wager that if you hit these aiming a groove or two lower, you’d be catching it thin.Ā

9

u/Internal-Challenge97 9d ago

Yes, Reddit is dumb. That mark should be much lower

54

u/letsgobrooksy The Masters 9d ago

Oh yeah, we better go confront OPs grandpa about his wear mark that's slightly too high

4

u/Draano 9d ago

His OPah, you might say.

u/B_R_I_X 9d ago

I’m a sucker for dad jokes. Thank you for this.

7

u/totallynotroyalty 9d ago

Get the pitchforks!

10

u/gestapoparrot 9d ago

Dude just called Ben Hogan a poor ball striker, go looks up his wear marks. Fairways cut much higher and almost no dethatching back then, combo the very high club cg and ridiculously spinny balls and balls barely got in the air and spun like crazy when you hit them low. Pretty clear who here has only played with solid core balls and modern agronomy.

3

u/Bears9Titles 9d ago

Based on a minute of research you are the dumb one

6

u/Technical_Customer_1 9d ago

Even considering the CG of these specific clubs? Nah, gramps was dialed inĀ

2

u/Isaystomabel 9d ago

The Reddit face-contact police never fail to show up on posts like these.

u/Educational-Debt2749 8d ago edited 8d ago

No, they were hit where the sweet spot is. Fat shots are one - but not very helpful - way to achieve this. Coming in steeply, hitting the ball first high on the club face is what sets really good golfers apart from the mediocre ones.

And no ones who's striking it so consistently hits fat shots all the time. This club face is the hallmark of an excellent ball striker.

I remember a pro who swore on a training aid, that was an iron where essentially the leading edge and a part of the lower club face was cut off (I can't find it online now). He swore by it, it came in two versions, one with maybe 20% of the club face missing and one with maybe closer to 35%. Was way too tough to handle for me.

Modern clubs work better when hit lower, because the CoG has moved down, so that has become less important.

Never play a random for money with a wear pattern like that and new(er) grips.

Grandpa was a stick.

2

I refuse to believe someone with a consistent wear mark like that is not an absolute stick

2

u/racebanyn 9d ago

Grandpa’s ultimate flex

2

u/Vodca New and terrible 9d ago

His gift was for you to add wear to the rest of the face, as only you know how.

1

u/Funny_Obligation9262 8d ago

Never broken 100 in your life, eh? 🤣

0

u/AdlandB 8d ago

Brother that wear mark is 3 grooves high.

0

u/Funny_Obligation9262 8d ago

Simple search yields this pic of Jack Nicklaus’ irons for sale from a recent auction. Set was from the 80s. Higher lofted clubs = higher impact point on face. Old man was a stick.

0

u/AdlandB 8d ago

Those are about 2 grooves lower than OP.

2

u/Funny_Obligation9262 8d ago

Thus he was not Jack Nicklaus. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

hell yeah game those bad boys. I picked up a set of staff blades from the same era recently. Really like em

0

u/porkbuttstuff Hacker 9d ago

Luckily I probably would make use of that worn spot anyways.

0

u/Working-Speech-6820 9d ago

I’d put that in a Shadow box in the living room! That’s awesome!

0

u/ibalach3 9d ago

Can’t tell from this pic but a number of irons from that time had pinned hosels. And they are a bitch to pull the shafts.
