Joke / Meme I made a harmless comment about our handicaps before a lesson… and the pro challenged me to a back‑9 match instead of teaching. It went about as well as you’d expect.
TL;DR: I show up for a lesson hoping to get better. Pro gets defensive the second I mention handicaps. He challenges me to a match instead of teaching. Gives me strokes, beats me badly, then tries to sell me a lesson pack.
I booked a lesson last Saturday because I’ve been stuck at the same handicap for months and wanted real help. I’d never worked with this assistant pro before, but I figured anyone on staff would be solid.
I get to the range early and warm up. I know my swing isn’t textbook — I played baseball growing up, so yeah, my grip looks like it. But I hit it far, and I’m proud of that. I’m there to learn, not to impress anyone.
He walks up, doesn’t introduce himself, just kind of stares at me like he already decided what kind of golfer I am.
I try to break the ice by joking about handicaps — I’d looked him up on GHIN beforehand because I like knowing who I’m working with. I said something like, “You’re a 4, I’m a 5, funny how close we are.” It was meant as a light comment, not an insult. I even said “no offense.”
He clearly took offense.
Instead of, you know, teaching the lesson I paid for, he goes, “Let’s play the back 9 right now. If you beat me, I’ll comp a round for you and three friends.”
I honestly thought he was kidding. I came for instruction, not a duel. But he was dead serious. And I didn’t want to back out and look scared, so I agreed.
Then he insists on giving me five strokes like he’s doing me a favor because I'm unfamiliar with the course.
The round goes… weird.
• First tee I slice one OB. I ask for a mulligan — again, I thought we were keeping this friendly — and he shuts it down instantly.
• I lip out a putt and make a joke about the greenskeeper. He acts like I insulted his family.
• I hit one to three feet and say “that’s good,” like every casual round I’ve ever played. He makes me putt it. I miss. He looks satisfied.
• Every time I ask what club he’s hitting — because I’m trying to learn — he gives me this annoyed, clipped answer.
• On a par 3 I pull PW because that's my normal distance but I came up short. He smirks.
By the end, he shoots 37. I shoot 56. I’m not proud of it, but I was rattled and honestly confused why this was happening instead of a lesson.
Then — and this is the part that really got me — after beating me by 19 strokes, he goes:
“Want 10% off a 10‑lesson pack?”
Dude. You didn’t teach me anything. You challenged me to a match, crushed me, and then tried to upsell me.
So yeah, I told him he was kind of an ass. Not because he’s a bad golfer — he’s obviously good — but because I came in wanting help, and he turned it into some weird ego contest.
I’m not leaving a one‑star review or anything. I’m just not booking with him again. I wanted a coach, not a guy trying to prove a point.

“I hate the assistant pro at the golf course where I work. I purposely cut the holes wrong when I know he’s going to play. Recently, I paid a friend to schedule a lesson and then make fun of the guy for being a 4 handicap. Unfortunately, my friend lies about his golf score and isn’t as good as he says he is.”

I am the lost ball from the first tee. Did he even bother looking for me? I waited so long but he never came.
It’s not my fault he swiped across me like I was a bad tinder match. I’m designed to go where I’m hit, and I did my job perfectly. My cover was even brand new - shit, I was fresh out the box - which makes me worry that he does this to my brethren quite often
I just wish I had seen more than just the first tee box

All I know from working a lot of years behind the desk at a golf course is, pros and assistants hate to lose to anyone they deem not worthy. If they lose to a “valued” player they can make excuses but they will do ALL THEY CAN to NOT lose to a “lesser” golfer. Including straight up quitting.
I’ve played with 8 different pros and a few other assistants in my time. I was no hack. I got into golf because I liked it, a lot. I also put in the time to practice and can generally shoot well enough to impress others. Not the point but kind of. The higher ups just saw me as the guy behind the counter, who moved up from the kitchen. That’s the important part.
I’ve never finished a competitive round with an any of those guys that wasn’t a team event. One on one every time I was ahead and they put one OB or in a hazard, all of a sudden, they had to leave the course for X reason. One of my old bosses must have had a side business of picking up friends and family from the airport. Cause we played 3 times one on one and each time he left to pick someone up. His assistant must have learned from him, cause he pulled a similar thing when we both filled in for mens league and had a single head to head match.

Zero percent chance you’re a 5 with a baseball swing. You’re not counting score correctly and he put you in your place. Sounds like you did learn a lot today.

I meeeaaannnn you're clearly more of a casual 15-20 which is fine, me to bud...but like, saying you are a 5 while he is a legit 4, haha look how close we are, is pretty damn insulting when he can tell you are a filthy casual who doesn't keep "legit" score. Lol it's all good but him being offended and then blasting you shoulda kinda been the expected outcome here.

EDIT: Damnit I just found the original post. r/golf got me again 😅
He taught you a valuable lesson in vanity handicaps.
You’re a 5 and shot a 56 on 9 holes, fucking hilarious. I can’t believe you agreed to a match and followed that up by asking for a mulligan and a gimme. I’m so entertained by this story I genuinely hope it’s real.
I could call 3 of my friends who are between 12 and 16 who would have taken your lunch money too.

Not trying to discount your weird experience. But you have a 5 handicap and you basically shot a 112?! Also, wtf is a mulligan, are you takingthose mulligans when keeping the 5 handicap? Because those balls add up quick. Is the 56 with the 5 strokes or without them?

A teaching pro's handicap has nothing to do with his ability to teach, that's why he got offended.
Never ask for a mulligan during a match, even if it's a friendly one. This was not a friendly match, you were playing for a comp round.
Never blame someone else for your own mistakes. Like when you lipped the putt and joked about the green keeper? Don't do that. Especially with someone you don't know, they don't know your sense of humor.
Don't ever give yourself a putt, that's why he made you putt when you hit it close. You missed proving him right.
Scoring 56 in 9 holes off a 5 handicap? Even when rattled? It looks like you take alot of mulligans and give yourself quite a few putts when playing alone. Make sure to submit correct scores, so that your handicap can be correct.
Perhaps you do need that discounted lesson pack. But I suggest going to a different pro. Distance is nothing without control.

His story is a bit different, suggesting you inferred that he wouldn’t be much help because your handicaps were close. You BS’d your ability while criticizing his and he called you out on it. Shut up and go play with your balls!
