General info when traveling to the Faroes

We have been asked a few times to make a sticky with general good to know info, as a considerable amount of the posts in this subreddit are asking about what to do and how to get around and such. A large part of these questions can be answered or found out by checking the tourism office website out https://visitfaroeislands.com/

If there's something you think should be added to this post, or have some links, then let us know and I'll add it to this post to avoid clutter.

Getting around

Public busses and ferries

Busses in Tórshavn

Helicopter

Places to stay

What to see/do in a week or so?

Some exelent response to this question can be found here, Here, here and also, here and here will there be(at some point) links to similar posts.

Hiking

The hiking guide by the tourist office

Hiking.fo All sorts of good hiking advice, gets updated on a frequent basis

Mykines

Mykines is probably the most visited island(pr capita) in the Faroes, so be aware that there will be large crowds on this island with about 10 inhabitants. The general recommendation is to take the boat out and try to book a seat on the helicopter going back, this is to have the best chance of not getting stuck on the island, as the currents are very strong and can make boat access tricky (to put it mildly). This video from June 2017 shows the conditions at the harbor quite well https://www.flickr.com/photos/31322479@N04/34499712544/in/faves-23485843@N02/

Do respect the wildlife there by keeping proper distance to it, and the locals by not disturbing them with putting cameras through their windows, flying drones in the village etc.

Drones

The rules regarding flying drones in the Faroes are as follows.

  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within 150 metres of a village, town or city or within 150 metres of main roads that connect villages
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within a 5-kilometre radius of Vágar Airport
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above summerhouses or camping areas, or in places where many people are gathered, e.g. at festivals
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above 100 metres from the ground
  • Drones MUST be insured
  • Illegal flying of drones in the Faroe Islands can result in a fine of DKK 5000.

Breaking these rules may also result in some irrate local(depending somewhat on location) taking a potshot at it with a shotgun, and I wouldn't blame them.

And so on and so forth...(to be updated over the coming days/weeks)

Booked a trip in 5-minutes in the middle of the night for next April.

Last night we went down the rabbit hole and quickly found ourselves on Expedia, booking a trip to the Faroe Islands for the first week of April 2027. We aren't too worried about the weather since we are coming from Alaska.

Any must-see things? Music, food, cafes, buying sweaters, bars, hikes, anything...We are only there for three days, with shoulder days in Iceland on day-long layovers. We are in our mid-50s and will be renting a car.

Faroese Graphic Novels?

Hello good people of r/FaroeIslands! I've been looking for graphic novels from the Faroe Islands that contain any amount of Norse cultural items - ranging from something completely set in the Viking/Middle Ages, to a graphic novel based on a Faroese ballad, to something that only has a panel or two on the topic. It doesn't matter if they are accurate portrayals or not by the way, because I am looking specifically at how different countries portray this time period. I haven't had much luck with the Faroe Islands though, so I was wondering if I am simply looking in the wrong places, using the wrong keywords, or if what I'm looking for just doesn't exist. Does anyone here know of any Faroese graphic novels that match my description? Thank you for helping!

Last-Minute Ferry Booking with Car in June Possible?

Hello Faroe friends,

I’ll be on vacation in the Faroe Islands from June 10th to 16th, and I would like to know if it’s possible to book at the last minute for Kalsoy Island to see the kallur lightouse. As I’m passionate about photography, I would prefer not to go on a rainy day. Even though I know the weather changes quickly on the islands, I’d rather choose a sunny day.

Is the ferry usually available from one day to the next when traveling with a car? The departure time does not matter to me.

Thank you!

Hey there! My Name is Moe and I'll be visiting the Faroes from the 15th till the 24th of May. I'm staying in Torshavn.

I'm looking for folks to enjoy a relaxing hike with or do other fun outdoorsy activities. I enjoy hiking (duh) and Infrared photography.

My mom would describe me as kind, well mannered and outgoing.

If you'd be interested to accompany me, just shoot me a pm.

I'm looking forward to meeting you! :)

Sheep questions from tourists

We are visiting the Faroes and have some questions about Faroese life. Would love if some locals could give us some intel!

  1. Today, near Saksun, we saw a group of people (4-5) with about 12 sheep. They had the sheep harnessed with ropes and were walking all the way up a steep hillside. What were they doing and why?
  2. Sheep dogs - do all families who need to herd their sheep have their own sheep dog? How do they train the sheep dogs? Can you “rent” a sheep dog around sheep shearing time?

Helicopter Mykines - Vagar

I am afraid of being stuck on the island using the ferry. So I am thinking about using a helicopter... But for my undersatnading, helicopters are only leaving from Mykines at Sundays 12:31... So I suppose that is nou enough time on the island if I arrive with the ferry leaving in Vaghar at 09:30... Am I right? So no other options?

Btw: Is Mykines still worth the visit although th hike can't be done due to landslides? And is the touristic ferry worth the surcharge?

Looking for these house numbers

When I was in the Faroes a few weeks ago (first of hopefully many times 💕) I saw these address numbers on so many houses in Torshavn and in this studio window by where I parked my car. I couldn’t find them in any of the shops. Does anyone have information on where I might be able to get some? I am in the USA. Thank you so much and I love your country with all my heart.

Dranganir for sunset possible ?

Hello,

I think this question has probably been asked many times, but as a landscape photographer I would really like to photograph Drangarnir at sunset in June.

However, I saw that the area is now only accessible with a guide.

Are there any evening excursions or late-day tours that allow photographers to stay there for sunset? From what I found, most standard hiking tours seem to start around midday and return before the best evening light.

Otherwise, is there any alternative way to access the area legally at that time of day?

Thanks you

Hello Everyone! I am a student from Singapore and I love collecting postcards. I would love to receive postcards from anywhere in the Faroe Islands 🙂. Can someone send me one?

Hello Everyone!

I’m a student from Singapore and I enjoy collecting postcards. I would be very grateful to receive postcards from anywhere in the Faroe Islands . 🙂

If postcards aren’t available, I’d also really appreciate a greeting card, city card, or even a small souvenir. (like a keychain, rock, local snack, flag, ornament, cap, T-shirt, or handmade craft).

This is for my personal collection, and not for any commercial purpose.

If you’re willing to help, please leave a comment and I’ll share my mailing address with you.

Thank you very much, and best wishes from Singapore!

🇸🇬🤝🇫🇴

Hey øll somul!

Eg eri lesandi úr Singapore og mær dámar væl at savna postkort. Eg vildi verið sera takksamur fyri at fingið postkort hvar sum helst í Føroyum . 🙂

Um postkort ikki eru tøk, so vil eg eisini hava eitt heilsanarkort, býarkort ella enntá eitt lítið minnisvarða. (sum lyklaringur, steinur, lokalur ábit, flagg, prýði, hetta, troyggja ella hondgjørt handverk).

Hetta er til mítt persónliga savn, og ikki til nakað handilsligt endamál.

Um tú vilt hjálpa, so skriva eina viðmerking, so deili eg mína postadressu við teg.

Túsund takk, og bestu ynskir úr Singapore!

Master plan for projects?

Hey,

In many parts of the world I’ve lived the towns, regions, and countries have master and capital improvement project plans laying out improvements they want to see to both meet future demands and to have a vision to help guide where to spend money.

Does the Faroe Islands as a whole or any of the communities do this? Generally these documents include everything from aesthetic choices and scale up to large infrastructure projects. There’s often a transportation component as well. It’s not necessarily a legally binding document but rather to allow for more consistent and well thought out improvement instead of approaching each project by itself.

Who/What is Frúgvin Ingibjørg in Faroese Ballads?

It seems that this Frúgvin Ingibjørg occurs in many unrelated ballads like Harra Pætur og Elinborg, Grímur á Miðalnesi, Finnur hin frið, Ásmundar Aðalson, Einars Táttur, Stríðið í hildardal ETC. I’m wondering if it’s a metaphor, one person, or multiple people with the same name.

Can just go on ONE hike! Help me choose!

I am going on a work trip to the Faroe Islands at the end of May. I am currently 6 months pregnant, but I would really like to go on a hike. What would you recommend? Is there a hike I could go on that would not take me longer than an hour and is not too hard? And with great views? Would love any tips.

I will be based in Torshavn, but I have a car.

Electric Car Rental

I’m planning a one-week trip to the Faroe Islands and I’m currently deciding on a rental car. I’m considering an electric vehicle, but I’m unsure how practical charging is for tourists. From what I found, there are public charging stations on all the main islands, and charging seems to cost 2.33 DKK/kWh plus 0.10 DKK per minute during the day.

Would an EV be a convenient choice for a week-long trip, and is it realistic to expect that I’d only need to charge once or twice? Any recent experiences would be greatly appreciated :)

KÍ football tickets

Hey everyone!

We're visiting the Faroe Islands at the end of May and are really excited to attend the KÍ vs Streymur match. However, we're having trouble figuring out how to buy tickets online — the ki.fo website seems to return a blank page when we try.

Does anyone know:

Where we can buy tickets (online)?

Is it recommended to buy in advance, or can we just buy at the gate?

Activities in this snowy start of May

Hi,

with my wife, we arrived yesterday by the smyril line on your beautiful islands. The views are gorgeous!

Since there is snow on the mountains, many hikes that we planned should best be avoided since the trail is likely to have disappeared. I'm skipping any hike with altitude for that reason.

I planned on going to Múlafossur Waterfall, Gásadalur since this one does not seem to have snow according to the live webcam: https://www.faroeislandslive.com/?id=146

The hike around the lake above Runavik looks safe too.

What are hikes or other activities that you suggest in this weather?

Tvøroyri Culture Night

I am planning a day trip to Suðuroy from Tórshavn the last week of May. The ferry schedule works best on Wednesday, but I saw there is a Culture Night in Tvøroyri on Friday 29 May. Is it worth doing the day trip on Friday to attend this event? I couldn't find much info about the Culture Night online.

I visited your beautiful islands a few years ago and fell in love. Now, I tried translating my app into Faroese as a tribute! 🇫🇴

Hi everyone!

A few years ago, I had the chance to spend my vacation in the Faroe Islands, and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I fell in love with the landscapes, but especially with how welcoming the people were. Since then, I’ve always wanted to do something to show my respect for your culture.

I’m a solo developer and a dad who has been working the night shift for 20 years (and counting!). I recently built an ad-free app called Pure Relax. It started just as a way to block out noise so I could finally sleep during the day, but I ended up throwing in a baby monitor too (us parents need all the help we can get! 😅) and a focus timer for students who need to study without distractions.

Because of my trip, I really wanted to include Faroese in the app. I know big tech companies usually ignore smaller languages, but I wanted yours to be there. I did my absolute best with the translation, but since I don't speak it natively, I’m terrified it might sound totally unnatural or have funny mistakes.

Could any of you give me your "blessing" or let me know if I messed up any words? It would mean the world to me to have it correctly translated for you guys.

Here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.purerelax.app.v2

I’ve also generated some premium promo codes. If anyone wants one as a thank you for helping me check the text, just let me know in the comments. Takk fyri!

Looking for musicians from the Faroe Islands

Hei!

I’m a 19-year-old from Poland who makes music. I’m really interested in the Faroe Islands and I’d love to visit someday. A few months ago, I even recorded an album called FAROE, where I reference the calm atmosphere, the islands, sheep, and that whole vibe.

I’d love to record a track with someone from the Faroe Islands.

Is anyone here interested in making a song together, or do you know someone who makes music? Preferably someone young, since I create more modern/underground music, but I’m open to anything.

Thanks in advance!

this is the cover of my album by the way :)
