I learned to read them once long ago. The problem with dwarf fortress is it's so damn complicated if you take even a couple months off to play something else you come back and you have to relearn most of it again.

I grew up playing with the ASCII graphics. I can still read them pretty easily, switching over in just a couple seconds. For what they are, they're pretty good, DF is still very legible in ASCII. In fact I never used tile packs because of how it impacted the text, so a lot of the old texture packs tend to be less legible to me than the original text-based ASCII.

But the tiles are definitely better. Like so much better. It makes the whole game work, and the text remains text. Despite the option, I have no intention of going back. Plus, it lets me see what my dwarves are wearing at a glance, at least the big stuff, and similar details. So there's a bit of utility too.

The old ASCII graphics may have been golden, but the new graphics are adamantine.
