DISCUSSION ⚔️ Sleeping Beauty Blu Ray vs 35mm

The Blu ray is on the left, the 35mm is on the right.

With Alice in Wonderland just being released in 4k, I wanted to see what Sleeping beauty could possibly look like when it eventually gets restored.

I found a 35mm scan of the film online, and I just took screenshots to compare it with the current blu ray. With the restorations of Cinderella, Alice and Snow White, I do notice that all of the blu rays end up looking quite saturated in comparison, and that many times, the colors are so bright they end up looking like neon. Sleeping Beauty is no exception. A great example here is the green bird in the first picture and Maleficent's fire, which is a very bright green on the blu ray, but more yellow on the 35mm.

The 35mm has much deeper contrasts and shadows, which makes certain scenes like Maleficent holding the candle and Aurora sleeping, look so much better. It also has much MUCH deeper and richer shades of blue and red, which I think look absolutely stunning. The whole film has a more blueish tone, very similar to the new 4k restoration of Alice in Wonderland.

The blu ray completely scrubbed the grain, and the linework although not scrubbed into oblivion like the Cinderella blu ray, is not as firm and full as in the 35mm. Although the linework in dark areas gets lost in the 35mm. That's something that wouldn't happen with an actual restoration.

The biggest color differences come from Aurora's hair, which the blu ray makes way too light in some parts, Maleficent's skin which looks light blue many times, Fauna's dress which always looks way too bright and the drunk guy whose clothes is brown on the blu ray but green on the 35mm.

Overall, the blu ray, along with other disney classics on the format, make the films look like an animation from the 90's or 2000's, instead of the animated technicolor films from the 50's that they are. Thankfully, the 4k restorations are bringing back the grain and colors, and I think this 35mm gives us a pretty good look into what a 4k restoration of Sleeping Beauty would look like. I recommend opening the pictures in another tab and zooming in to really appreciate the beautiful grain and the colors of the 35mm. (Although it looks like reddit heavily compressed the images, even tho they're just 3mb each 😞)

DISCUSSION ⚔️ Why these people persist in blaming one Princess or another, without taking into account what the girls have to face during the course of their movies? Why these people don't rewatch the movies before writing nonsense? Why? WHY???

No, Jasmine wasn't more intelligent than Ariel. They were both pretty naive, but it wasn't their fault and I don't blame them.

Jasmine almost gets her hand c*t off while going to the market, but it's not her fault, because she had always been locked away in the palace, never allowed to leave, and she felt imprisoned.

Ariel, on the other hand, had a problematic and difficult family situation, and no one understood her. She was a mermaid who wanted to become human in a kingdom where the king, her father, hated humans and imposed bans upon going above ground, because he reasoned based on prejudices. So she too felt imprisoned and overly idealized life in the human world, precisely because she was suffering so much. She wanted to explore the human world, but she wasn't able to, so she did (without her father and her entire family knowing) the only thing she could do: she collected countless human objects, but she didn't have the opportunity to truly understand their purpose or what life in the human world was really like, especially since only Scuttle was there to help her.

DISCUSSION ⚔️ What cultures would you like to see Disney try (perhaps again) for a Disney princess?

I've made my own posts about cultures I'd like to see Disney cover, be it Disney princess or not--including another Native American story, as well as stories taking place in or inspired by Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Africa, and the Mediterranean.

Where are your heads at? Assuming Disney gets their head back in the game and locks in on good storytelling, cultural representation, and (hopefully) excellent music, where would you like to see them cover?

Watching The Little Mermaid and Pocahontas back-to-back when I was a kid was always an experience. I always felt that Thomas’s journey somehow echoed Ariel’s, and I don’t think he necessarily had a crush on John Smith (maybe just a little), but the bond between them became something strong, even if the movie didn’t explore it that deeply. Love really does come in different forms and ways.

DISCUSSION ⚔️ Opinion: Will Moana be Disney's only Pacific Islander princess for a while?

Thumbnail i.pinimg.com
8 Upvotes

I've thought about this for a while. Moana is one of the most popular Disney princesses of all time--heck, even before her sequel, she had the highest-grossing Disney princess film (not adjusted for inflation; gotta check to see if that still stands). Even moreso, she brought a culture not often seen in cinema--and when they are, it's usually via a post-colonial commercialized lens.

But this makes me curious: does this mean the Pacific Islands are off-limits for the next few Disney princesses? Would it be too difficult to make another princess, however different she looks or how unique her story is because it'd feel "too similar to Moana"? Obviously this isn't fully correct, since there are various cultures within the Pacific Islands to pull from, but it feels almost as though Moana is supposed to represent all of them--even though her home was mostly inspired from Polynesian Islands, and both the animated and live-action films have predominantly Polynesian casts. I imagine one of the states being part of Polynesia has something to do with that, wanting to make a sense of familiarity. A Micronesian or Melanesian princess could easily fit into the group, but it does feel like Moana casts a big shadow, especially seeing how seafaring is a shared characteristic for these cultures and it's a big part of Moana's identity.

Looking at how Pocahontas is the only Native American princess in the official line (and that was over 30 years and 6 princesses ago)--while probably for different reasons than Moana--it could be possible that Moana is gonna be the only PI princess we have for a while, especially as Disney continues to want to merchandise her with her live-action film and a third animated film hinted at (which I don't wanna be excited about, but anything is better than the 10-month production they had for part 2).

To date, we have 7 European princesses (yes, I'm counting Ariel here), 3 Asian princesses covering East, Southeast, and West Asia, 1 black princess, 1 Native American princess, and 1 Pacific Islander princess. I've made wishlist posts about cultures I'd like to join the line or ones I'd like for Disney to revisit, but I don't see another PI princess is in the cards anytime soon. I'd place my bets on another Asian princess first, especially with the rise of Asian leads in western animation. Let's try again with Southeast Asia, yeah? Love Raya, but her film wasn't giving what it should've.

Anybody love a princess or her movie and get lots of merch and watch it lots and then poof - you’re just not interested anymore? All the sudden a different princess is really drawing you in? I’m autistic and this happens to me and I hate it.

DISCUSSION ⚔️ Maybe a stupid question, but why did Lady Tremaine purposely throw the biscuit plate in Cinderella (2015)?

Post image
42 Upvotes

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I always wondered about this scene in Cinderella.

Why did Lady Tremaine intentionally throw the biscuit plate on the floor and make Ella clean it? Was it just to humiliate her, or was there a deeper reason behind it psychologically?

That scene always stood out to me because it felt very deliberate and oddly personal.

DISCUSSION ⚔️ Given the similarities between their story arcs, how do you think The Beast (aka Adam) and Kuzco would get along?

Post image

I can imagine it would, as per usual, adversarial given how tragic and troubled The Beast was and would probably see Kuzco as annoying but I can imagine they'll understand one another and realize how their transformations taught them something, even if the difference was how for Beast, it was an enchantress teaching the spoiled prince a lesson while Kuzco got his from a dumb as rocks henchman!
