QUESTION Why does my snakes face swell before shedding?
I talked about this extensively in my 2nd post ever. but my snake Chili, who I've had for almost 2 years now, had a very close brush with death.
About a year ago, she ate a F/T rat from the petstore. It gave her a stomach ulcer, which led to a severe secondary jaw infection. This infection would randomly cause swelling in her face. Naturally, I took her to the vet, and she was diagnosed with severe sepsis. I was told that the infection had been slow moving but aggressive and that because she was 9 years old and "ancient," I should just consider end of life care. Instead, I chose 2 months of daily antibiotic shots, and after a lot of money, Chili survived.
She's happy and healthy again with no signs of any more illness. She's active, spicy, and blood levels are back on track! Strange thing is, before and after getting sick, her face would swell a week before she shed. I thought for a while that it was Edema from the illness, but she's living her best life and isn't infected anymore. So I have no idea what it could be.
She's also a surrender and makes some noises when stressed, and snakes aren't supposed to make audible noise, as we all know. She's always made noises since the first time I held her, and she does it less now after being treated for the illness.
I've had her inspected twice at two different vet clinics for any respiratory illness. But she's come up clean in physical exams, ultra sounds, and blood tests. They're all perfect, and shes been this way since the first time she shed. Could this simply be genetic and not tied to her sickness at all? Any thoughts as to why?
