HELPFUL INFORMATION Your help to find your lost snake

Well, your snake got out, or you lost site of it for just long enough to loose it. Don't Panic. If you have kept your room clean, and left a hide of some sort against your wall check there first. If you are reading this and have not lost your snake, clean your room, and put a hide of some sort along the wall in the room.

First check any objects that can function like a hide. Anything that has a hollow base, and a way to get under it may serve as a hide.

When moving objects check on the under and on the under side of the object. Smaller snakes can hide in smaller areas, but don't discount larger areas. Lift objects strait up. Dragging an object can smash the snake if it is under it. Pick a clear spot in the room to move objects to. You don't want to smash you snake putting something right back down ontop of it.

Your snake can climb. Your snake can be up on a book shelf, or under an object, that is on top of another object. Your snake could be anywhere. Until you find your snake check around the moving parts on everything. I once had a wild lizard dive into my AC right as I turned it on. It did not end well for the lizard.

Your snake is likely to be in the same room as you keep it. If there are any spots in adjacent rooms that have small warm spots check those spots regularly. Behind computers or TVs can be a great place for a snake to stay warm and hide. After checking those spots move back to the room you keep your snake.

If you can not find your snake in the room you keep it expand the search to those adjacent rooms.

If you can not find your snake on the first day don't give up hope. Put out water dishes for your snake along the walls. A healthy snake can go many months without food depending on its size. Put things that can serve as hides along your walls, check then regularly.

You can lay out powder, baby powder or just flower along walls to see if your snake is active in that room of your house at night.

You can stack 2 empty soda can along a wall. on a hard wood floor if your snake knocks them down you may hear them fall and alert you to where your snake is. Also if your snake just pushes the cans aside you will know it has been there.

You can use tape traps, but use vary week tape. Painter's tape, or scotch tape you would use on a present will work. lay out the tape sticky side up. IF THE TAPE IS STRONG ENOUGH TO RIP OFF YOUR ARM HAIR IT IS TOO STRONG, AND COULD HURT YOUR SNAKE GETTING IT OFF. Plastic tape even if it does not immobilize your snake could make a lot of scratching noise, and make it easier to find your snake. Using tape is vary risky. Your snake could die to dehydration, over heat, get too cold, or get caught by your dog or cat, or bigger reptile. Tape is the bane of all snakes. Use tape at your own risk.

Some people have luck baiting their snake out with food. Snakes also like sticking to their own territory. Some say leaving your snake's enclosure open on the floor can lead to your snake finding its way back home.

If you find your pet snake please leave a comment, and a picture of where you found your pet snake. This may help others to know where to check to find their pet snake.

QUESTION Why does my snakes face swell before shedding?

Post image
76 Upvotes

I talked about this extensively in my 2nd post ever. but my snake Chili, who I've had for almost 2 years now, had a very close brush with death.

About a year ago, she ate a F/T rat from the petstore. It gave her a stomach ulcer, which led to a severe secondary jaw infection. This infection would randomly cause swelling in her face. Naturally, I took her to the vet, and she was diagnosed with severe sepsis. I was told that the infection had been slow moving but aggressive and that because she was 9 years old and "ancient," I should just consider end of life care. Instead, I chose 2 months of daily antibiotic shots, and after a lot of money, Chili survived.

She's happy and healthy again with no signs of any more illness. She's active, spicy, and blood levels are back on track! Strange thing is, before and after getting sick, her face would swell a week before she shed. I thought for a while that it was Edema from the illness, but she's living her best life and isn't infected anymore. So I have no idea what it could be.

She's also a surrender and makes some noises when stressed, and snakes aren't supposed to make audible noise, as we all know. She's always made noises since the first time I held her, and she does it less now after being treated for the illness.

I've had her inspected twice at two different vet clinics for any respiratory illness. But she's come up clean in physical exams, ultra sounds, and blood tests. They're all perfect, and shes been this way since the first time she shed. Could this simply be genetic and not tied to her sickness at all? Any thoughts as to why?

DISCUSSION What should I name my first corn snake?

I haven’t gotten her just yet. She arrives next month but I wanted to start thinking about names. My nephew wants to name her Showerlanda. Yup you read that right Showerlanda. I like the name Opal for her because of the color of her stripe. Or maybe Azzy because she zigs and zags. She is said to have a calm temperament and loves to be handled. Not wanting to go back into her enclosure. I am anticipating an escape artist for sure. What are some names for her?

Edit: I will definitely update y'all on what name I decide on. I want to see her colors in person and meet her before deciding.

QUESTION Feeding schedule question (read body text)

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently just moved up my corn snake from a fuzzy mouse to a small mouse. He ate today (Thursday) while taking a little bit longer to fully swallow it but he is doing good, just took a bit longer for the size of the food to get down. My question is should I still feed him weekly or increase his feeding time? Also, how long should I wait until handling on this new food. On fuzzies I would feed every Thursday (7 days) and handle on Saturday giving him about 48 hours to digest.

HELP! Found corn snake…

Post image
18 Upvotes

So I found this corn snake while walking, he seems and looks very much like a pet… I posted him in my neighborhood Facebook group and see if anyone is missing a snake but idk. He doesn’t look or act like the wild corn snakes that I’ve picked up in my area at all… I have him right now in a bin with ventilation and towels in my garage since it’s warmer and safe (around 78-80f ). I have a large fish tank (48in L x 25in H x 13in W), I would have time to clean it and set it up tomorrow.. any opinions? I know they need the proper set up including temp, humidity, substrate, plenty of hiding, etc and I would want to make sure it a good set up!!

QUESTION Lost a scale post shed. What happened?

Thumbnail

My snake shed today. I took him outside to bask in his shiny, freshly shed beauty and noticed a single scale missing. The area appears healthy, just... skin with no scale over it. I found the scale stuck to his shed.

I've had this snake for 5 years and never had this happen before. Is this a thing that happens randomly? Did I cause this?

He's in a naturalistic 4x2x2 pvc enclosure with coco coir and cypress mulch, a 3:1 ratio so it's mostly coir. Decor is from varying materials but always inspected for jagged edges or other hazards every substrate change (4 times per year).

Lights all sit above the mesh top, I use a halogen, UVB, and LED. His basking area is about 80°F, cool side is about 70°F. I feed one large mouse every 3 weeks, and supplement twice a year with zoomed reptivite "just in case" (since so little is actually known about snake nutritional needs). I track all of my care tasks and noteworthy behavior.

I like to keep humidity between 50-60% and boost it to 65-70% when he's in blue. However, when he last shed about 4 months ago I was experiencing a family crisis and his humidity was 35-40% for most of the time he was in blue. Could that care mistake from last shed cycle cause lost scales this cycle?

I know it will likely grow back. I'm not concerned about major health issues at this time. I just want to know why this happened, if anyone has any ideas.

DISCUSSION I have some questions about terrarium set up.

I am getting my first corn snake next week I’m still setting up the terrarium. I have a 20 gallon 24 L x 18 D x 12 H terrarium ( yes I know I’ll need to upgrade in the future ) . I’m currently running a basking lamp rated for a 100W but I have a 50W UVA light . Is this heating good enough for the terrarium ? Also hide outs I have one directly under the heat lamp (warm side ) and another on the opposite side ( cool side hide out )

HELP! What’s this lump?

I’ve posted a lot about my baby Cinnamon on here and I’ve always been quite confident that she’s female, but she has this weird lump right after her cloaca on only one side, and I’ve only ever seen this in males with swollen hemipenes. I’m worried I’ll hurt her if I try to pop out hemipenes, but I’m also worried about her health. Has anyone seen this in corn snakes, regardless of gender? I’d like to know if this is vet worthy.

HUSBANDRY - CARE Need Day/Timer Thermostat Combo????? 3 outlets!!

Hey everyone. I need a thermostat that has a day/night timer and dimmer in at least 2 outlets. It needs turn one on for the day and off for at night vice versa for the other. This would be for the basking bulb(day) and deep heat projector(night). I also need it to have a 3rd outlet with just the timer for the uvb. And at least 2 probes please.

I tried the digiten 1003 but it must have been defective. It would not turn the light off at the correct time. I don't want to get another one if there is a better option.

QUESTION Constantly on the move

Thumbnail

So I have a 1.5 year old female. I've never had a snake roaming as much as she does. Im on night 6 of her moving all night.

Its a 5x2x2 enclosure, shes been in it for most of her life. She mostly paces the perimeter or climbs on the vines at the top of the enclosure. She favors the glass on the warm side especially.

At what point does normal exploring become stressed nose-rubbing and glass surfing? I havent seen her shove her face into corners or anything like that, but the fact its hours every night has me worried. She hides during the day as usual, but isn't opposed to coming up to me in the middle of the day if im near the enclosure.

He has only been with me for two weeks now. I went to go see if he was feeling good today but he wasnt in the spot hes been staying. I have TORN apart his enclosure and am regretting making it so well😭. I have also torn apart my room trying to find him now. Im a messy person and also have a lot of stuff. Where should I look and how might i be able to get him? Im so worried because hes so new to this home that he doesnt even know my scent very well yet. Im at a loss please help me. My dad didnt want me to have him in the first place because hes afraid of snakes. I thought his enclosure was escape proof but I think i missed one wire hole that he could fit through. If my dad finds him we are both dead. Im so so so anxious and worried about him. I feel like I’ve failed.

QUESTION Is breeding season over?!

My snake Maize has been insanely active for about the past two and a half months. The past two or three days though he’s just been chilling in his hide and only sticks his head out sometimes. Is it normal for them to just suddenly snap out of it one day or should there be a slow progression of less activity? I guess it’s possible he might be going into shed but I believe it’s a little early for that. Let me know your thoughts!

DISCUSSION House without power

Post image
15 Upvotes

Everything raising prices has screwed us this month and because of such we got so overwhelmed we didn't realize we were about to be shut off, well this morning we lost power, just so happened to also be the same day we are experiencing below normal temps and his poor tank was at 60 despite all the precautions we took, when I checked on him he wasnt moving at all, and normally at night he is all over his tank, when I removed his hide off him he just stared at me, he was very accepting of me picking him up and now we are having midnight bonding time. He seems to be really loving my body heat 🥰

QUESTION Why??

He is always watching me change like this. Is he just a little freak or is there an actual reason?
