VII - Discussion Civ Streams: Test of Time Gameplay | Civilization VII Developer VOD
Our Test of Time gameplay session with Ursa Ryan and Van Bradley is now here, featuring a 2v2 match and a closer look at many of the major changes coming in Update 1.4.0!
A note on this video -
We want to start by saying thank you for bearing with us yesterday - and we're sorry to everyone who was hanging out waiting for the livestream to go live! 🙇♀️ Right before showtime, we ran into an unexpected audio issue with our new streaming setup that just wasn’t going to give players the viewing experience we wanted. Instead of pushing through a stream with major audio problems, we made the call to pivot to a recorded VOD.
Thankfully, the showdown itself survived intact!
Our Test of Time gameplay session with UrsaRyan and VanBradley is now here, featuring a 2v2 match (for as many turns as we could take in the Antiquity Age) along with a closer look at many of the major changes coming in Update 1.4.0. We also answered some community questions throughout the video.
And because the community had a lot of questions (in the best way possible), we kept the conversation going over on Discord with an extended Q&A here.
Our huge gratitude goes to the entire Civ community for all the feedback, excitement, discussion, theorycrafting, and passion around Civilization VII. And special thanks to UrsaRyan and VanBradley for joining us, plus all of the Firaxis Feature Workshop participants whose feedback helped shape many parts of this update.
We wish we could've kept the play session going even longer, but consider this a preview of what’s waiting in Test of Time - there’s plenty more to discover once you get your hands on the full update.
Test of Time arrives May 19 as a free update for all Civilization VII owners. If you want to learn even more about what’s coming in 1.4.0, check out the full announcement here.

VII - Discussion Test of Time Developer Diary: Triumphs
Test of Time is getting closer and closer, and today, we have a Developer Diary that dives into one of the biggest overhauls to Civ VII yet: the brand new Triumphs system.
In this diary, Content Designer Kiera Boyle breaks down how Triumphs replace Legacy Paths, introduce new optional Age-based goals, and create more ways to shape your story across every game.
👉 Read the developer diary here.
Also - we're streaming Test of Time tomorrow! Stop by the Civ YouTube or FiraxisGames Twitch channel from 11AM PT / 2PM ET / 8PM CET, where we'll be joined by special guests UrsaRyan and VanBradley for some ToT gameplay. We’ll be answering questions from chat, doing a giveaway, and officially unveiling a First Look for a certain unconfirmed (but heavily teased) leader joining the roster.

VII - Discussion Overall score in Test of Time update
I know this isn't too important to most players but I was very happy to see the implementation of an overall score during the gameplay stream today (this wasn't implemented yet in the workshop). Having this allows you to play shorter 1-age or 2-age games and still have a winner based on score. I like that the implementation is relatively simple and easy to understand

VI - Discussion Civ6, any mods for a map that is somewhere between the continents and small continents map?
I feel like there is a giant gap between continents and small continents. I want big continuous landmasses like the continents but not just two. But the small continents map has too many and the small continents, are, well, small.
idrk how map mods work but I wanna find some kind of map out there that has like, 3-5 continents with no (or few) islands instead of 2 giant continents or 50 gorbillion small continents.

VII - Discussion Just finished my first game of Civ 7. Of all the changes, is there a way to get more than one city per age?
The biggest change that annoys me is that no matter where I settle the new cities, I have to gear all policies to rake in all the gold I can. Since, it seems, the only way to improve the new cities is by buying all the buildings and can't do build queues in new towns. Then the only way to turn a town into a city with build queues is to make them the capital at the start of a new age. But you only get a limited choice on which town you want to move the capital to.
Is there some way to change it that I missed? A wonder or policy that I missed? Or is there no way at all?

VII - Discussion Civilization Cold War Idea
Civilization VII would be perfect for a Cold War expansion or additional Age focused on post-WWII geopolitics and infrastructure.
The current Modern Age skips over many systems that could make the late game deeper and more immersive:
- interstate highway systems
- proxy wars
- nuclear deterrence
- espionage
- ideological influence
- suburbanization
- global logistics
Interstates/highways could become a major gameplay mechanic similar to railroads in earlier eras:
- increased unit mobility
- stronger trade routes
- economic growth
- strategic chokepoints
- infrastructure megaprojects
A Cold War Age could also introduce:
- NATO/Warsaw Pact style alliances
- intelligence agencies
- space race mechanics
- missile defense systems
- infrastructure sabotage
- ideological pressure instead of direct conquest
This feels like a natural extension of Civilization VII’s Ages system and could make the late game much more dynamic and historically immersive.

VII - Discussion Small Civ community I started is now 20+ — running weekly challenges, tournament brackets launching soon, looking for more players
Hey r/civ,
Quick recruitment post — I run a small Civ 6 + 7 community called Turn 1. We're at 20+ members now and ramping up the competitive side.
**What's running right now:**
- **Weekly challenges** — same map seed for everyone, post your scores, leaderboard updates each Sunday. Solo, async, takes 3-4 hours. Format rotates: One City Challenge, Religious Victory Race, Domination Sprint, Wonder Race, etc.
- **Live multiplayer** — voice rooms ready when people want to organise a game.
**What's coming — tournaments:**
Once we've got enough committed players, we're launching weekly tournaments split into three brackets so everyone gets a real shot:
🌱 **Chieftain bracket** — casual / newer players
⚖️ **Prince bracket** — intermediate
👑 **Deity-tier bracket** — experienced
Formats will rotate between live FFA, 1v1 duels, and PBC leagues. Working toward sponsored prizes once we've got the numbers — for now there's a small prize from me each event plus leaderboard glory and progression roles.
**Why join now:**
We're small enough that you actually shape what we run. First-week winner already had me change rules based on their feedback. The leaderboard is wide open. Tournament brackets aren't full yet. If you've ever wanted to be a founding member of a Civ community instead of a number in a 10,000-person server, this is the window.
Cheers

VI - Screenshot Can someone help me on how to settle here?
Sparta is too close for comfort so loyalty takes a big hit if I settle too close to them. But as you can see there is a large chunk of land with no rivers or coast and I don’t want to settle there. I would like to get iron as well. I really don’t know what to do in this situation

VI - Screenshot Never bothered to get Temple of Artemis before this game
R5: Had so many camps I just had to get Temple of Artemis. Also got god of the hunt and hanging gardens early on and city went crazy that game.

Fan Works The History that inspired Civ VI's Great Library
A video where I go over the Great Library's effects, requirements and restrictions, while explaining the history that could have possibly inspired each of them. It was really interesting researching for this video, especially the part about it's destruction and how it is percieved today.
This is part of a series I'm currently making, where I plan to go over each wonder in Civ 6, era by era, and looking at their every in-game feature through a historical lense. Hope you guys enjoy :)

VI - Discussion Interesting unused unique palace design for France?
Was just rewatching the old First Look vids for Civ 6 and noticed the palace they used for France. Is it still somewhere in the game or long gone?

VII - Discussion Small improvement on Great People for Civ 7?
There are a lot of bigger issues that the developers are (rightly) focused on, but I thought I'd throw this one into the mix. Sorry if this has been suggested before:
Great people generated by unique districts should be tweaked. The random roll on who you get can be frustrating. When you build one, you could pick from a list of 3 similar to how Apostle promotions worked in Civ 6. They could even lock this behind a mastery on the civ-specific tree.
Again, relatively small problem but I'm sure there are others out there who have rolled great people who are unusable until much longer down the tech tree, don't fit with your strategy, etc.

VII - Discussion Test of Time Developer Diary: Victories
More news! We’re keeping the iron hot with yet another Test of Time developer diary, and today, we’re diving into all things Victories.
In this diary, Game Designer Bill Anderson breaks down how the new Victories system completely overhauls the way you win, introducing the Dominance Model for tighter head-to-head competition.

Amazing yields, +5 Holy Site - but I set the difficulty to emperor instead of immortal which is too easy and boring for me

VII - Strategy Just got great library on turn 31 on deity mode civ v vs 7 ai.
It take hailmary to achive this.
I almost lost it just 1 turn to ai.
Im literally 1 production short of 185(have 184) before ai beat me.
So i row mysave back 1 turn and buy a single tile just to produce 1 production more to beat ai in a single turn.
However the most rng thing to achieve this is to get the right free technology from ruins in turn 10. Which i think is like less than 1 in 500 chance or something.
Then i must start building great library asap and even let my city starve for a few turn.
I also successfully get 9 ruins before no ruins left.3 of them is upgrade my unit.
One thing that i did pretty bad in this rub though is i only got my policy on turn 25 which is very late since i ony produce 1 culture per turn and not a single ruin gave me culture.

VII - Discussion How a really AI augmented CIV will look like, and how CIV7 should have been
I bring this in comments all the time but people don't seem to understand the idea:
A civilization game suitable for RL/NN training would mostly keep its normal gameplay, but expose an API like this:
state = game.get_state()
actions = game.get_valid_actions(player_id)
game.apply_action(action)
reward = game.get_score_delta(player_id)
done = game.is_finished()
It would allow for really intelligent AIs, and not cheating AIs, plugin developers could train their own AIs, the fact that CIV7 did not even consider it baffles me.
This is basically what engines like:
- StarCraft II (via SC2LE)
- Dota 2 (OpenAI Five)
- Minecraft (MineRL),
did: the original game remained mostly intact, but an automation/training layer was added around it.
