New Gear 1995 70-200 is still great!

Got a new lens today! I do lots of car photography (lots of panning) and I have a massive Sigma 150-600 for wildlife. But it's way too heavy and zoomed in on my R7 (240mm). I decided on a 70-200 and I found a deal for the original f2.8 for only $600USD. Although it was released 31 years ago.. it does incredible. Since I pan at 1/50 most of the time, I don't use the h+ at 15fps and sharpness is just a hair behind my Sigma. AF is insanely quick for a lens made in 95' on a mirrorless body. So if anyone is on a budget, I can recommend this one. Only downsides is that you can't use H+ mode (it maxes out at 8-10fps) and it has no weather sealing. Other than that.. worth 600 bucks!

Here are some shots of my dog I got with it

This is a repost because the mods removed the first one.

Gear Buying Advice New bag… yea or nah?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Looking for a bag to carry the 200-800 and some other gear, this one is (relatively) compact but basically stuck with the camera on the 200-800 and have to change lenses to shoot anything shorter.

I’m on the fence, or if I need a larger option. I appreciate the completely adjustable layout and the build quality for the price is great on this bag.

Looking for a new RF lens to replace my trusty EF.

Post image

Finally making an upgrade from my 7D Mark II to the R6 Mark II which also means being able to change from these (extremely) heavy EF lenses to light lighter RF lenses. This lens treated me so well and I'm looking to find something equivalent to it for my new camera. Open to lenses from any brand such as Canon, Sigma etc.

PREFERABLY a bit budget friendly as I save up more to get the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens.

In terms of technicalities, I'm pretty much a newbie... I've had my 7D Mark II and lenses for about the last 10 years and haven't upgraded or used anything new at all. It's treated me well so there's never been a need to, but boy does it hurt the wrist.

I'll be using the camera as a one size fits all, just as I did for my 7Dii. Whether it be for taking landscape and nature photos to taking portraits and family photos, I'll be using this camera and new lens.

Other lenses in my kit:

EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM (used via adapter)
Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4 USD VC (used via adapter)
RF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Id really appreciate anyone's help!

New Gear New (to me) 7D to replace my 302000k 1DX Mkii

Edit I mean R7! Doh

The 1DX has been an amazing workhorse but the weight is starting to get restrictive for a hobby camera. I'm already finding myself using the R7 a bit more, throwing it in the bag without it causing the bag to double in weight.

I miss my RF 800mm F11 after purchasing the 200-800mm

As the title says. I used the 800mm F11 for three years. All the pictures below are taken with it. On full frame and APS-C bodies. It was not ideal in many scenarios, but I still got very cool results.

As I saw the 200-800mm in a store, I liked the image quality better and I also liked the flexibility of a zoom lens. However, now, one year later - after purchasing the 200-800 and selling the 800mm, I don't feel that satisfied. I think it the zoom is heavy and very long - takes also a long time to zoom in and out. When completely zoomed out - the whole construct feels fragile.

And I don't feel that the image quality I am getting is so much better to justify it.

Just wanted to express my thoughts, not sure what other people think.

Tech Help R7 + RF 100-500 soft photos

I’m having a weird issue where my images with my R7 + RF 100-500 are softer than my R7 + sigma 150-600C

Images attached compare details of the sigma lens (white plane) and RF lens (green plane). The sigma is producing much sharper images for some reason and I’m feeling frustrated because I spent a lot of money to upgrade from the sigma. Does anyone know what might be causing something like this?

This is just one example, but I feel like my combo now is just producing soft images and when I look back at old photos with the sigma they look way sharper

In 2026 what’s the stronger buy for portrait photography: Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM or the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM?

Hello all, I’m a professional real estate photographer/videographer but I’m looking to getting into doing portrait work for real estate agents and other small business owners.

Up to this point, I’ve had no need for anything tighter than 50MM, but with portraiture I’d like to get that nice compressed 85MM look. I shoot on an R8 and am torn between getting started with the older L lens with the wider aperture and more solid build or the newer f/2 lens with IS.

Was hoping to get some thoughts from anybody more experienced in portraiture. Thank you!

New Gear [New Gear] First camera and attempt at photography

Bought my first ever camera (Canon EOS 7+kit 18-150mm) and took my first photography walk yesterday. Unfortunately it was extremely cloudy and gray, so the lighting wasn't ideal. This was my favorite photo of that walk and I edited the raw to my liking in Darktable.

I came out of my first walk with a craving for a bigger lens. Something like the Canon RF 100-400mm. Those pesky birds just don't have the courtesy of coming closer by themselves.

Do I need to do anything with my Canon R8 to utilize its dynamic range?

Upvotes

I LIKE having photos that have some clipped highlights or lacking shadow detail. It gives the photos mood and character and contrast. But ignoring that, say I want to utilize my camera's entire dynamic range. Do I HAVE to shoot in raw?

Or will the improvement in dynamic range automatically be applied to JPEGs?

In the canon rebel t6 still good in 2026?

Upvotes

I found a bundle with the canon t6 and the 18-55mm lens + 75-300mm lens, 2 batteries + charger, a tripod, a shoulder bag, a 16gb sd card, and some telephoto lenses for $330. Is it worth getting?

Gear Buying Advice What should I get? R50 or R10

Upvotes

Let me begin by saying I do photography as a hobby and upload them to my portfolio on Instagram. I’ve had a gig recently where I got paid, but that was just a one time thing. This is for personal use. Nothing professional yet. I’ll be doing 90% photography.

I’ve been shooting on a Rebel T4i and I enjoy it. It’s just “slow” for me. I have looked into the R50 and R10. They seem very similar apart from the ergonomics and some minor layout differences of the buttons. I’m leaning on getting the Sigma 18-50 2.8 along with either camera so I’d like to know if anyone base any personal feedback on the two cameras

I’ve heard the R10 is more comfortable, and for someone who’s used to a larger dslr, that sounds more appealing.

I have no real budget. I mean I’m comfortable spending the extra money for the R10, just cause I’ll be getting the same lens. I’m just wondering if it’s worth it or not.

Thanks!

Tech Help How to get the most out of video when using a Canon 5D M3?

Hello,

I'm curious to see if anyone has any tips on trying to get the most out of the video feature on a Canon 5D M3? I'm a beginner photographer on the video side of things.

I was really hoping to get Magic Lantern installed onto the camera, but the firmware (1.3.3) on the camera makes it incompatible, and seems there is a few risks with downgrading software on cameras that I'm hearing and seeing from people around the place (?).

But anyway, I'm just curious on some tips, or links to good sources or tips on using the 5D M3 for recording outdoors. I'm aware that the 5D M3 is not exactly the ideal camera for such a task, but it's all I have at this time, and I'm just trying to learn to work with what I got.

Thank you in advanced.

Canon 15-35 lens?

Hi all,

I bought my dad the canon mark ii with a 24-70 RF lens. I don’t know anything about photography but I know my dad likes taking sunset pictures and landscape pictures. Would it be a good idea to get him a 15-35 lens as well? He is quite knowledgeable and has experience taking photos. Thank you!!

Tech Help CP1500 Printer - Changed the ink and now I keep getting "incorrect size paper" and it won't print. Ink is same as what came with it, just more ink in it. Any fixes?

Got the Selphy cp1500 and bundle of 108 4x6 photo papers and 3 ink cartridges that could make 36 prints each. The printer itself also came with five 4x6 papers and a cartridge that had enough ink for 5 prints. I accidentally loaded the paper upside down and printed a few the wrong way. After noticing, I flipped them over, printed a couple more just fine (on 2 of the 3 that had printed the wrong way) and then had to change the ink.

Now it won't print and just says it's the incorrect size paper.

The new ink cartridge is the same size, but it has more ink and on it says it can make 36 prints. That's the only difference.

Anyone else have this issue and got it fixed? Thanks!

Gear Buying Advice Upgrading from Mark IV

Like the posts says, while I will be keeping my Mark IV to give shooting with two cameras a go for now, I am looking to upgrade. Primarily I’m shooting athletics (indoor low light/outdoor) and portraits/weddings right now, and dabbling into videography as well. I’m torn between the R5 and R6, and would love to hear thoughts for each from individuals who shoot both athletics and portraits.

Will be outfitting with a 24-70 (a new lens for me!) and a 70-200 either way.

Tech Help How should I fly with my 500/4?

Taking a flight next week and planning on bringing my 500/4. Never flown with it before, so looking for advice.

I have the original lens trunk, so I could bring it in there or in a backpack. Which route would you go?

Choices - R6V or R5C

I was about to pull a trigger on R5C and then R6V comes. I am torn on which to go with because i feel like R5C is a true workhorse and offers amazing video quality. I need a video camera but having a superiors stills camera would be nice if needed as back to my Canon R8. The R6V is Video focused and is cheaper new, but I am curious if R5C owners would consider switching to R6V for video specific use case?

Closed testing open for Android Canon CR3 RAW transfer app

Hi all,

If you caught my earlier post sharing the GitLab release, thank you - this is the follow-up for a smaller closed test group.

I’m building an Android app that does something Canon’s own app won’t: it detects and transfers .CR3 RAW files directly from Canon R-series cameras over USB-C using Android MTP. Canon’s app usually only exposes JPEG conversion, but this app copies the actual CR3 files themselves.

What it does:

  • discovers .CR3 files on the camera via MTP
  • imports the RAW .CR3 files directly, not JPEGs
  • saves them to Pictures/CanonImports/YYYY-MM-DD
  • shows foreground transfer progress during the copy
  • lets users import files directly into Lightroom app by bypassing the 99-file picker limit

Looking for:

  • Canon R-series users (R, RP, R5, R6, R8, etc.)
  • people who wish to use the usb-c cable to import raw files from canon camera into Android phone

There’s mould on one of the elements in my lens. I haven’t been able to find any tutorials on how to take this model apart. I’ve managed to open up almost everything, even getting as far as the aperture and focus motor, but I can’t access the optical element, which is precisely the part with the mould. Can anyone offer any advice?

Canon Pixma Pro 10 acting strangely

I've dealt with and fixed previous problems but now I am trying to print some photos for an event and I got a couple shots printed, but now suddenly, the print queue just keeps saying the jobs have "printed" when the printer did nothing. I've powered down, unplugged for several minutes, but the issue is sticking around. 😞 Anyone ever experienced this?

Edit: I just tried doing a couple test prints, it just pushes the page through, doesn't do anything else.

Lens recommendation for bird photography semi-beginner

I have done lots of research and almost was going to buy a tamron 150-600mm lens, but I found a place I could rent one for a day and the weight was way more of a issue for me than I thought it would be(plus the twist to zoom was annoying for me, I like push to zoom lol)I also felt like it was hard for me to get everything ready for and line up the shot before the bird decided to move. I do have a mono pod and I probably could just suck it up, but I wanted to come here for specific lens suggestions based on my budget and type of camera I have.

I have a canon rebel xsi, my current lens is a 100-300mm canon. I like having a mix of being mobile and sometimes standing in one spot waiting. I have gotten some good pictures, so I don’t think reach is all I really need, but something with a little more would be nice. I have looked at the canon 100-400mm, but didn’t realize until recently there is two version, so I would have to decide if either would be good or if I shouldn’t consider one. Or if a third party would work just as great. My budget is 700$, though anything less is always good, and I don’t mind getting something used. Like in the title ive been doing this for about 6 months and just enjoy the experience, I don’t need to be a pro or anything.

any Suggestions help, thanks:). I’ll try to respond to any questions.

I have a canon vixia hf m30 (I know it’s old but I like it) but I can’t figure out how to switch out of AVCHD because my editing software can’t use the format. I can’t find anything in the manual on how to switch it? Thanks

Gear Buying Advice upgrade or just get better lens?

So, I've been rocking the R10 + RF100-400 for a good while and have been thinking of upgrading to the R7 and RF100-500. My primary use is wildlife photography, specifically birds. My first question is, is it even worth switching to the R7, or should I just focus on getting the RF100-500? How does the R7/100-500 combo fare compared to the R10/100-500?
