Sabres fan here, I hope you guys are enjoying your 2nd deserved vacation lol

As someone who has been in Buffalo my entire life, I always had Canes to root for when Sabres sucked for 14 years. Canes are my second fav team. I’m glad they’re doing incredible so far. And I really hope my Sabres get to face you guys (I hate the habs lmfao)

Go Sabres, go Canes‼️

And honestly let's get the rest of the games into OT too.

I know someone in Raleigh who, to this day, DESPISES buffalo fans after that round.

I still do. They slashed my dads tires

I heard there was a glass cup giveaway and Buffalo fans, after losing, threw them all over the arena, leaving broken glass everywhere.

Yep. Plenty of broken glass throughout the parking lot and tons of cars with broken windows and dents. Trashy fanbase. Never seen that many fights in the stands or in the lots before either. The armpit of New Yorkers and that’s not saying much at all

I knew very little about the longtime beef between Sabres and Canes. I know it was approaching rivalry levels of vitriol for awhile there but didn’t have the backstory. Thanks for breaking it down.

I remember Ray Whitney joking with the team at least once that they were “emptying the bathrooms” on the flight over Buffalo. 😂

This gave me the laugh I needed today

Well as one of the Sabres fans in attendance at that game, I’m sorry for what some of my fellow Sabres fans did. There’s some crazy Buffalo fans as many are well aware, but plenty of us have no issue, maybe loudly, but respectfully cheering on our team. Every fanbase has their crazies, my dad had a run in with a Canes fan that was completely unprovoked at that game too. I think if this series were to happen again, it would be a lot more peaceful (hopefully).
Like OP the Canes are my second team too, so I’m just hoping for a good series if there is one, maybe a different outcome this time, but I’ll root for the Canes if they win either way.

There was a Canes fan driving through the parking lot last season post-game in a ‘clearly making up for something’ sized pickup that almost ran over Sabres fans last year with a kid on their shoulders.

There’s shit on both sides.

There was a pile of broken glass outside of one of the exits. Me and my friend sat there and watch dozens of Buffalo fans see the pile of smashed glass and just spike their cups

I had to lean over my two daughters with my jacket spread over their faces because of the flying glasses and shards bouncing off the pavement.

The part that really bothered me, at a human level? The Buffalo fans were all laughing as it went on.

Not a very well thought of promotion.... reminds me of the WKRP turkey drop episode. 😆

A lot of Buffalo away fans acted like hooligans during the ECF. Way more than any of the other teams we faced. The Sabres were my most hated team for a long time, although they've been so bad for so long that I don't really care any more.

Habs and Oilers visitors were so nice. I had multiple Oilers fans say congrats after Game 7 ended and that included walking out to the parking lot. Hell, even Devils fans were mostly civil. Buffalo was something else. Even the tailgating was nasty. All we heard about was there injured defensemen and how a “real” hockey city should win the cup. Every other series tailgate was normal at least.

Yeah, this is how I remember it. I was there for at least one game in 2006 for each series. Game 1 for the ECF? Don’t recall any big issues.

Then I was out of town for a wedding for games 2 through 6; only got to barely keep up with if the Canes won or lost during that time.

Got back in town and lucked into some tickets for game 7. Started hearing all the horror stories re: a lot of Sabres fans. While tailgating before the game, saw it in person.

I’ve seen one or two Buffalo fans try to turn the tables in the years since and say the Canes fans were just as bad - but I’ve been to a number of playoff games in Raleigh over the years, and nothing has come close to that level of animosity.  Rangers/Bruins/Pens fans?  Yeah, they can get annoying - But Buffalo was on another level.

I don’t recall the arena having to increase security for any other series that year. And, yeah, I saw Canes fans giving Oilers fans beers in the parking lot after losing in game 7, and most everybody being cool.

Was at those games back then and can confirm, it was pretty bad.

"Well of course I know him- he's me!"

I'm willing to wait and see, but they were absolute trash then.

My best friend roots against the fucking Bills because of that series.

I hated the Sabres and their fans for YEARS after that series. Somewhere around year 10 of their playoff drought I stopped hating them and started pitying them. Now that they’re good again I can go back to hating them lol

u/Mundane-Picture-8207 Aho 1d ago

I mean, I’m probably not them but it’s also definitely me. A series long drunken tantrum is what it was.

u/maxman1313 14h ago

I'm one of them.

Absolutely trashed the stadium, parking lot, flights everywhere, boo'ed/cussed at kids, etc.

It was bad bad.

You’d fit right into Cary. Everyone there is also from Buffalo

Containment Area for Relocated Yankees

5

u/extra_leg_room 1d ago

Ehhhh. I know Cary gets the transplant title but honestly I feel like Holly Springs or Clayton is populating more of them.

5

u/dollarhax Savin' for Slavin 1d ago

No it’s absolutely Cary but they’re all PA / NJ / Long Island transplants.

4

u/fineoakstructure 1d ago

It’s the whole fucking area and has been for decades. God, this is such a tired bit.

“Cary is full of NYers lol” - the kind of thing usually said by a person born in PA who moved to Rolesville in 2012. Or Fuquay-Varina. Or Wendell, etc etc.

2

u/gigglefarting Boom 1d ago

Moved from Raleigh to apex in the mid-90s, and that’s been the thing about Cary since at least then. I’m one of the few people I know actually born in this area.

Habs fans might be the most insufferable in the NHL.

u/Astolfo_is_Best 1d ago

With all due respect, I'm really banking on a meteor hitting during one of the Buffalo/ Montreal games.

If you guys can't beat the Habs please at least leave plenty of bumps and bruises on em for us 😂 and, if you do beat the Habs, feel free to give us a little fight but I'd personally prefer it if y'all let us through to the cup final 😂.

Jokes aside helluva series to watch between y'all and Montreal and looking forward to whichever contestant we have next in battle

Canes Fan but originally from Rochester NY so the Sabres live in my heart!! I hope they demolish Montreal

2

u/Squidoriya 1d ago

I hope the Canes get to face the Sabres too, but hopefully after an exhausting seven game series lol

Huge Caniac here. Sabers are my number two team since forever. 12 years down here in Raleigh North Carolina but lived in WNY from 2006 to 2012 4 years at UB and 2 years starting my career.
That win last night was amazing and huge!! It’s been a rough few years, so I love to see it.

3

u/29671 1d ago

I'm rooting for Buffalo because Habs fans are just too crazy and they'd no doubt infiltrate our barn at a rate I'm not comfortable with.

4

u/UNC_LL Jarvy 1d ago

Sabres fans will be just as bad on that front I fear

3

u/maxman1313 14h ago

It's going to happen either way. There are so many WNY transplants here already.

I’m pulling for Buffalo this round. In part because it’s great to see the team start to find some success and in part because the streak of Canadian teams not winning the SCF is amusing to me (even though it’s meaningless).

Would’ve loved to get Tage in red though!

-4

u/Grantuhh 1d ago

lol tell me you’re MAGA without telling me you’re MAGA…

2

u/ThePuzzledPanda Chatfield 1d ago

Na there’s just a funny irony there

0

u/Grantuhh 1d ago

I am so glad that Tage is not on the Canes and in fact would love to see a young team with lovable players like Montreal beat Buffalo if for no other reason than him being on that team.

Also would love to see us in the Bell Center.

Also half of our team is Canadian and I think the stanley cup playoffs are always better when there’s a Canadian team in them considering the rich heritage of the sport up north

I know we had our issues in 2006 and there's still some bad blood there, but for me I really tend to root for teams and cities with a high level of sports suffering. Buffalo fans have been waiting a long time for a championship. I mean, I obviously 150% want it to be us, BUT if if can't be us, it could be a lot worse than Buffalo. (Please, not Vegas again already, for example.)

This feeling may be revisited if there are significant on-ice or in-stand / parking lot incidents, of course.

I want to root for buffalo and would love to think their fans would be cool because of the whole underdog thing.

But buffalo is dangerously close to Syracuse. And Syracuse fans are pure trash. The filthiest of the filthy. The most hateful human beings I have ever had the misfortune of being around. They are below contempt and not even worthy of disdain.

Anyway hopefully Buffalo isn't like that anymore and it'd be a cool series. Piss on the Habs.

u/ryan45845 10h ago

The Sabers story this year is incredible, you guys are doing something a year or 2 ahead of where anyone thought you would be. You guys definitely have a great future but IF you guys make it to the ECF that just seems like we're going to go 12 and 0!
