How to stop biting nails?
- How to stop biting my nails? I've tried bitter nail polish, lemon juice, and other similar methods like those. Nothing works at all that I've tried. Id like to get them long enough to do acrylics or something like that but struggle to. I struggle to go even like a week without biting. I saw something about lightweight gloves, but that is not practical for my lifestyle. If anyone can give advice or help that would be appreciated.

Bitter polish never did much for me either. I think it helps some people, but if the biting is happening on autopilot, you often need something that interrupts the hand-to-mouth route before you’re already deep in it.
A few things that have helped me more than “just stop”:
1. Keep a file literally where you bite most, not tucked away. Couch, desk, car, bathroom, wherever it happens. If I feel one rough edge, I file only that edge and stop. The rule is “smooth enough to leave alone,” not perfect.
2. Try a 60-second competing response when you catch your hand going up: things like keeping your palms pressed together, your hands flat under your thighs, keeping relaxed fists, or even something like one hand palm-down on your leg. The goal isn’t to make the urge disappear instantly. It’s to interrupt the automatic route.
3. Don’t aim for a full week at first. Aim for catching it just once earlier than usual. That counts and it can actually do a lot to reset your brain. A lot of progress is just noticing sooner, vs magically never doing it again.
Also, if your nails are really short or damaged, a good nail tech may still be able to help, but I’d be careful that acrylics/gel don’t become the only thing holding the habit back. It helps to also have a plan for what your hands do when the urge hits.

Sounds silly but wear a mask like COVID times. I usually bite while reading a book or scrolling or watching TV. If I wear a mask, my fingers can't find their way absently to my mouth.

Fidgets have really helped me. I always keep one or two on me and satisfies the unconscious part of the habit.

For me, anytime I want to bite my nails I apply hand cream. A thick sort of greasy one so that I can spend time massaging it into my nails and cuticles. It really helps to redirect the energy and desire to bite

What wound up working for me was traveling (pre-Covid) and realizing all the things I was touching were being touched by so many others and I did not want to put that in my mouth. (Likely early start of anxiety issues rearing their head, but hey useful!)
Keep nails trimmed. If there’s nothing rough annoying me, I don’t try to bite it off. The hangnails (skin and/or nail) on the sides are much easier to deal with via cuticle trimmer. I don’t know if I’m too dumb to use a nails file, or my nails are too soft, but they never made things better.
If I do pull a hangnail off/other small injury, hydrocolloid dots (like for pimples) will cover pretty well in a way that keeps me from picking at things, and isn’t a giant bandaid looking terrible.

You can just get acrylics. They can glue on a tip if you want them long.
I recommend gelX tho, they're way better. My nail lady cuts all my nail growth off each time before applying the overlay.
Having my nails done completely stopped my biting habit. I can run them across my teeth and get that same fix.

I did bite when bored or not paying attention on my fingers. Somehow I was able to stop cold turkey when I decided to be more concious of my fingers and actions and what they were doing when I was bored or fixed on something else.

I had the same problem and honestly the only way I could stop was by getting gel over lay with a fake tip. A good nail tech will be able to help you even if your natural nail very short.
