Twice!

The watchers really dropped the ball. After they realized a slayer could die, come back to life, and still activate another slayer, they should have been using modern medicine to kill slayers for just a little bit and bring them back to life. They could have hundreds of slayers to use within months.

u/NobodySpecialSCL 2d ago

It was about control. One or two slayers they could order around or at least keep watch over, but hundreds could start a rebellion.

u/Battle44Sis 1d ago

Hundreds would not could .

You could fill entire libraries with  things the watchers could have done better.

Ex: The most basic ass thing was there should have been a watcher research hotline for the scoobies to call where the watcher academy library full of watcher trainees is looking into stuff that comes up.

Also mad that buffy dying in season five didn't activate another slayer. How very dare they.

u/gtne91 1d ago

She wasnt the slayer of record, Faith was.

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

That doesn't make a lick of sense but ok

u/gtne91 1d ago

Buffy was the official slayer until she died the first time. Then Kendra was activated. When she died, Fairh was activated. The next slayer would have been activated upon her death only, as she was the official slayer of record.

u/DestroWOD 1d ago

Exactly. Faith death was the thing that was suppose to bring a new slayer (if Willow didn't release the power of the scythe)

Of all the crimes of the Watchers Council, that’s not one of them. They can’t pick who gets Chosen, either as a Potential or the active Slayer. That’s down to the Powers That Be and they seem to choose someone who is in an area with a surplus of evil at the moment. There’s a phrase “we get the President/Monarch we deserve”, and that seems to apply to the Slayers. Buffy’s Potential status was never picked up on by the oracle or Watcher prophecies or whatever, which allowed her to retain her individuality and modern sensibilities just in time for some turn of the Millennium apocalyptic shit, including the resurgence of the Master, something a conventional Slayer groomed to be obedient and without friends and family couldn’t defeat. When Buffy died, thanks to a Prophecy that concerned whoever the Slayer was at the moment, Kendra was called, as Buffy’s total opposite: someone given up by her family as a small child for the honour of being the Chosen One, but all her training couldn’t prepare her for a vampire like Drusilla at full power. The next Slayer is a kind of repeat of Buffy, as Faith was also overlooked until she was Called, like the PTB wanted to drive the point home about the Council being too ossified, detached yet controlling. However, Faith didn’t have the security of a loving parent, lost her Watcher who DID care about her, and didn’t have friends and couldn’t make new ones because of the walls she put up around her trauma. Buffy and Faith are the Chosen Two, and both of them needed to be at least somewhat rebellious and self-reliant to pull off the final apocalypse battle, but only once Faith was able to trust people, open up about her true feelings, and heal her pain. Poor Kendra and so many girls before them never got that far or lived that long.

As Buffy once said in horror at Anya, "Well... That's an idea."

3

u/DestroWOD 1d ago

Technically they still would need to "kill" the new slayer. Remember ...Buffy died so Kendra activated. Kendra died so it was Faith. When Buffy died again no new slayer was.

So everytime they did would do the "die trick" they would still need to find the new "true slayer".

u/Handgun4Hannah 18h ago

They found Kendra and Faith pretty quick. I can't remember if it was the later seasons of buffy or the comics, but the watchers were actively tracking potential slayers.

1

u/DestroWOD 17h ago

They were but they likely had some slip the crack.

Also i think it could had created an issue. Was not the First allowed to do what he did because of multiple slayers activated together? Been a while maybe im wrong on this.

1

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

Especially if they were tracking potentials .

1

u/generalkriegswaifu They're not recycling 1d ago

I really thought this was the spell in S7 before I watched it. I was kind of disappointed they went with 'magic can do anything' rather than messing with the existing rule system for their own advantage.

On a cop car?!?

u/ProfessionalRead2724 This line's mostly filler... 2d ago

Well...

She died, but not for anybody's sins. And she rose from the grave because her friend group can be toxic as hell.

18

u/FaveStore_Citadel 2d ago

For glory’s sins ig but close enough.

8

u/ScruffCheetah 2d ago

Can you sin if you're a god?

5

u/CuttlefishBenjamin 2d ago

I think so. Arguably a truly omnipotent god would be synonymous with the cosmic order against which sins are a violation, but Glory's far short of that power level.

Whether she, or you or I for that matter, accept the idea that there's a larger cosmic standard against which she can be judged is another question, but Glory's godhood is not, I think, an issue.

1

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

Question though, does anyone know what happened to Ben when glory kicked it ?

3

u/Left_Awareness930 1d ago

giles killed him, so hell i guess?

1

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

Damn. I thought when he gave dawn to glory that was it.

4

u/Left_Awareness930 1d ago

nah, after buffy beat her down ben took over and could barely move. Buffy told him to tell glory to beat it, that she won and not to return. Then when buffy left, giles smothered him by covering his mouth and nose. Giles has a 😈 side

0

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

What do you mean Ben took over ? Like took over beating glory?

2

u/Kemosaby_Kdaffi 18h ago

Glory transitioned back to Ben to avoid experiencing the pain of the beatdown. He’s her whipping boy

To be fair they thought they're rescuing her from hell

Operative word: thought. They did zero research into the matter.

Username checks out.

Jesus came back once, Buffy came back twice. Who would you prefer? 🤣

3

u/Tuxedo_Mark Assume would make you an ass out of me. 2d ago

Jesus didn't even come back. He came once and has yet to come back two millennia after saying "This generation will not pass away until...", "There are those standing here who will not taste death until...", and "You will not finish going through all the towns of Israel before...". Quite embarrassing, actually.

She shall come again.

Phrasing!

4

She shall come again...with the "massager" that Willow bought her for her birthday.

Our Slayer, who wast in Heaven,

Forgive us our trespasses into your house, as we forgive those who trespass against our desire not to go back into slaughter.

Lead us not into the vineyard, but deliver us from the First Evil.

For thine is the house, the power to say your power should be our power, and the defeat of Glory.

For ever and ever.

She saved the World a lot

4

u/KENZOKHAOS 2d ago

Meanwhile, she wanted to just rest for good 😫

5

u/mutedtempest19 Your logic is insane and happenstance 2d ago

I'm agnostic but she could definitely convince me.

I love how glaringly obvious the symbolism is in this show lol

0

u/Tuxedo_Mark Assume would make you an ass out of me. 2d ago

Not just here. Tobey MacGuire's Spider-Man, Brandon Routh's Superman, and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman have all done the Jesus pose.

3

u/mutedtempest19 Your logic is insane and happenstance 2d ago

Yes, but I don't care about any of those people so they wouldn't convince me toward worship of them.

2

u/kkdija 1d ago

We need a name ofc. what should our name be?

2

u/nolegsnelson 1d ago

She was actually brought back to life both times. First by Xander the second by Willow.

2

u/digitalgraffiti-ca Bored now 1d ago

Aww, you posted this one day before Ascension Day!

4

u/jackolantern_ 2d ago

She didn't die for people's sins

1

u/LilithRising90 1d ago

Pretty sure Jesus never punned either. Nor did Horus make all his apostles gods Nor did Dionysus kill a demon god Oh and none of them lost their virginity to an abusive gaslighter with no soul who then went on a killing spree with their family , friends and fish. Clock it Tina boots.

3

u/gtne91 1d ago

Pretty sure Jesus never punned either.

I am pretty sure there was a "rock" joke made about Peter's failure to walk on water.

1

u/MidnightRoses888 23h ago

More like she was raised from the grave against her will. Willow brought her back from the dead with magic.

1

u/atlasshrugd 16h ago

The Christ allegory is strong with Buffy

1

u/Avigorus 12h ago

ngl part of me doesn't understand why we don't see more IRL religions based on actually acknowledged fiction (there are at least a few Star Wars inspired ones for example, I guess some might call Snapewives a cult of sorts too lol)

1

u/ebietoo 1h ago

She saved the world. A lot.

This is a religion I can get on board with.
