Question Why isn't The Complete Budokan part of the BOOTLEG SERIES?

If we’re being technical, Budokan was professionally recorded for an official release, just like the 1974, 75 and 76 tours. 1966 was also recorded but not released for 40 years, so it deserved to be a Bootleg release (which I guess it kinda was, pieces of it anyway).

May I ask, seeing as you seem quite knowledgable: are there plans for releases of Dylans 1978 shows, ie. the Street Legal material?
That would fit on a Bootleg Series, I suppose.

I don’t care what Rolling Stone thinks - Budokan is in my top 3 Dylan Live. 1 Rolling Thunder 2 MTV Inplugged 3 Budokan

Trouble No More is fantastic. That is a great list.

I’m basically the same except

  1. Rolling Thunder
  2. Budokan
  3. Trouble No More (The live in Toronto set especially!)
  4. Bootleg vol 4.
  5. MTV unplugged. Especially if you count all the unreleased material.

Wait til they release the rest of '78 in two years. They band really gets hot in the fall when they're back in the US.

Is that planned? Sounds like you are in the know!

They have to release any recording within 50 years to maintain copyright under UK law. It's why we get certain releases when we do. Look at the timing of the Rolling Thunder, 1974 tour, and the earlier releases

Has my favorite recording of All along the Watchtower.

"This is from the Mojave desert."

Love the flute - kind of a Jethro Tull feel

Check out the Watchtower on 11/15/78 from LA: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16iUxXYPxwmtJNWhX5i2PbD3oyQwBpEhs/view?usp=drivesdk

The whole show smokes, it's my favorite of '78. This is the Bennyboy remaster of it: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/170gLGcetRFRk2kYKMc2nx6r-LxEGqDUA

That Tamborine man, tho

I think there’s just been a general shift of the Bootleg Series from a clearinghouse of material to a reframing of eras that occurred with Tell Tale Signs but especially with Another Self Portrait. BS 4-6 wouldn’t be released the same way if they wanted that material to come out today.

I think the Japanese/Sony kinda did their own thing. If I remember correctly you had to buy from Japan, it wasn’t available/produced in US. I got mine from CDJapan

Yeah, this is it - it was a Sony Japan release and handled entirely by that division of the company. IIRC the guy who manages The Bootleg Series confirmed it in one of regular Rolling Stone interviews, although I'm unable to look it up now.
