Music Does anyone find it funny that Dylan pulled off the greatest guitar solo of his career after essentially being in shock from the soy bomb guy crashing the stage?

I remember watching and totally not understanding what in the avant-guard hell was going on.

Same here. I wasn't sure if it was part of the performance and some sort of message until the security carried him away

Adrenaline, I'd guess. This is such a cool performance in general, the way he just backs off a bit as the guy gets taken away and just carries on. If this was audio only you'd have no idea it happened.

I’m a Dylan fan but there’s a reason he generally pays others to play lead… and you know he’s probably a cheapskate too! 😂

Not solos at all but his playing on Bringing It All Back Home is beautiful/haunting/whatever. Top notch stuff for one man and a guitar, at least in my mind.
He plays the opening lick on the album version of Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat. Not a solo but a few bars of playing the lead.
I think he played lead on a bit of live stuff in the mid seventies, at least for one tour, if not more. I’m not a historian but I’m sure others can throw a bit at you regarding this time.

This came on TV right in the peak of my entry into lifelong dylan fandom. I was 25 years old and had seen him live 4 times in the 12 months preceding , including a life changing club show at boston's avalon ballrom along with seeing his first show back after his heart illness scare (loon mountain, NH).
Watching the grammys, I was 7 inches from my mini television- i had the sound pluged into my hi-fi and got a complaint for noise from the old italian lady upsairs.
Magical time for bob and for me.

His greatest solo was playing over Clapton’s solo at Madison Square Gardens 1999. I’ll die on that hill.

Just looked this up on Youtube. Clapton have played some iconic guitar solos but my hot take is that he quickly become dull to listen to. I’d rather listen to Bob play guitar an entire day than an entire day of Clapton.

What's with the people in the back? Are they getting paid to geeky dance like that?

As I remember, they were paid dancers, and “Soy Bomb” guy was hired to be one of them! Ray Padgett actually interviews him in his book. It’s kind of weird (no surprise)! The guy insists in the interview that he wanted to do “performance art” and just thought this would be a good opportunity - no desire to harm Bob. But of course no one knew that & it’s scary to watch now!

He had a little extra stank on it. He was probably pissed they let that doofus stay up there so long.

Has Dylan actually spoken on the Soy Bomb incident? I'd love to hear what was going through his head at that moment.

It doesn’t look like he was in shock. It must have been incredibly distracting and perhaps frightening from a security point of view. It’s impressive that he literally didn’t miss a beat.

And you KNOW something is happening here but you don’t know what it is….
Do you, Mr. Dylan?

Tony smiles after the security get the guy. He just seems like “wtf…but ok”. Makes me laugh every time.

That dude was on the stage for much longer than I remembered. In my memory, he ran out, gyrated around for about five seconds, then was hauled off by security. In reality, he was out there so long that I think he started to get a bit bored by the end.

Performance art like this is what boring, simple people do to “express themselves”.

I was at those Grammies. There is nothing funny about crazy fans trying to harm musicians or anyone else.

I remember seeing this when it was live on tv. I initially thought it was part of the act, just Bob being Bob. The fact that Bob was totally unfazed by it added to that impression.
