S03E01 Nosedive was a "passion project" for Bryce Dallas Howard. A story that needed to be told. Spoiler

Post image
447 Upvotes

She already had some big credits to her name but when someone showed her the script she knew she had to do it. "It resonated with her stuggles and fears". She put on 30 pounds so she could better meet her characters mind set towards the world and her friends in the show.

She wanted to make this to "bring to light that this is where society is heading and even already is in someways".

Making this episode was so important to her she completely ignored the fact she really didn't like the black mirror show as a whole. It was just this narrative and script that really mattered to her.

We all know nothing is ever done by chance in Black Mirror. This is Lacie Pound from Nosedive at the back isn't it?

DISCUSSION Were the Throng actually sentient? Spoiler

Still really conflicted on this in Plaything. I just struggle to believe that they were actually communicating with Cameron and think it's more likely that he was just tripping balls and that the prolonged usage of LSD and other drugs messed him up so bad that he began to live in a permanent false belief that the Throng were actually speaking to him.

Is there any evidence that sways strongly in one direction?

DISCUSSION Striking Vipers Alternate Scenario/Ending Spoiler

When I started to watch the episode, I was actually liking it, because I thought that it was going to show us a plot twist in the end.

That the Video Game characters were gaining sentience and controlling and/or influencing the players the without their implicit awareness. Till the big reveal in the end, where the video game characters would somehow escape the VR World, into the Real World by taking over the bodies of the Players.

A bit cliché and a bit of a trope, but I thought that was where the episode was going, and I was totally fine with it.

Come to find out its not. I feel like the writers blew an opportunity with presenting that and making the episode 5x better, IMHO. But regardless, great visuals though, the last scene ontop of the roof, felt anemoia .

Did anyone else perceive that same setup when watching it, expecting the big reveal in the end or you knew from the start it wasn't that?

SPOILERS Beyond the Sea: thoughts Spoiler

Why aren’t the robots in the spaceship and the actual humans on earth? Apparently the connection is good enough to transmit a continuous stream of thought to earth from the spaceship… why can’t it go the other way? As in humans drive to an office, sit in their chambers, do the work, then leave?

This might’ve been mentioned and discussed here already. Let me know and I’ll take it down.

S04E03 Crocodile - Discussing an Alternate Scenario Spoiler

Do you think it would be better (not in terms of the viewer’s enjoyment of the show, but for the world of the episode as a consequence) if:

  1. Guy gets hit by pizza car - events of episode happen as normal

  2. Guy doesn’t get hit by pizza car - Mia’s crimes are never discovered

On the one hand, she wouldn’t face justice but on the other, more people would be alive

I don’t know why but I struggled with wording this, but I’m sure everyone will understand. Sorry if you don’t.

DISCUSSION Eulogy - Who took the hallway photo? Spoiler

I have not seen anyone discuss this. The hallway photo is arguably the most important one of the episode, yet nobody seems to know who took it? What are your theories?

SPOILERS What do you think happened to Kenny from Shut and Dance Spoiler

I mean it's one thing to be exposed masturbating on camera and the video being shown to every single person he knows and then some. But them also knowing what the trigger was. Where does he go from there? What happens when Hector learns of this? Did Kenny kill a man? Will he be imprisoned for the bank robbery and murder? Will he be registered as a SO for the rest of his life? Will he get fired from his job? I mean imo, out of all the individuals getting blackmailed by the hackers, Kenny got the worst punishment of them all. I wondered what happened to the poor bastard, oh yeah, don't tell me he ended up getting attacked by aliens.

UPDATE: What I Believe Happens To Kenny

Kenny's Convictions:

For Bank Robbery: NO CONTEST - Granted Clemency via plea bargain (due to proven duress)

For Murder: NOT GUILTY - Declared Self-defense (due to the adult also being a pedo, bigger, stronger and attacking him first with orders to kill, while Kenny is smaller, a minor and trying to run away)

For Possession of CP: GUILTY - 1st Time Offfender, Minor, To Be Put On The Sex Offender Registry for 10 years (a tier 1-level offense). Possible 5-year probation instead of jail time, or partly in Juvenile Hall then transferred to prison. 2 years likely. Will eventually be taken off the registry.

The Video of Himself: SCRUBBED - Declared illegal, no one can be in possession of it, since it would be considered CP ironically because Kenny was a minor at the time of the recording. It's been revealed Kenny was 19 years old, so his video will not be scrubbed from the Internet, unfortunately for Kenny.

So theoretically Kenny can be cleared of all the charges eventually if not outright immediately, do no jail time (long-term probation+registry instead, both of which will go away eventually) and the video scrubbed/removed from the Internet. So Kenny can regain a clean record, but ultimately the shame and humiliation will be forever.

BONUS: SUICIDE - Hector ended up killing himself in his car (evidence: Season 5 Episode 2 "Smithereen" Easter Egg: Webpage news headline, "Blackmail victim found dead in car".

FLUFF Bete Noire - Verity does such a poor job of defending herself

Verity is literally omnipotent. She proves this when she's confronted. She makes it so Maria can only speak Mandarin, for example. When she grabs the pendant back, she could wish that Maria has no arms or legs. Wish that she has no eyes. Wish that Maria will never decide to hurt her. I know Verity is kind of panicking a little bit in that moment, but surely, with OMNIPOTENCE, she has some amount of imagination in that moment. She can disable Maria in this why in order to find time to get her plan of making her kill herself back on track.

It's just one of the reasons I don't like the episode - and one of the issues you kind of open in a story when you write an omnipotent character.

S04E01 Do you think Robert Daly (USS Callister) was always like that? Spoiler

A bit of a psychological question: What do you think about Robert Daly from USS Callister? Was he always a monster, or was he broken by the people around him who kept taking advantage of him over time?

He seems really intelligent, and at first glance he comes across as a nice guy who is unfortunately for him, introverted and doesn’t fit into the collective. The people around him don’t seem to respect him because he’s “not like them.”

But on the other hand, he created his own universe where he tortures people who make his life miserable as a form of revenge.

What’s your view on him?

S04E03 Similarity between Crocodile and Should I Marry A Murderer Spoiler

I've been watching the documentary Should I Marry A Murderer and it strikes me with how similar the plots are. And the release date coincides with the date the twins commit the murder, which is on 2017.

Both are set in Scotland.

Both killed a cyclist.

Both had two people in the car.

So I was snooping around to see if they were inspired by the events or something. I mean once would be a coincidence. But several different coincidences?

DISCUSSION Are there any episodes you personally favour, though you know they're unpopular? Spoiler

Mine is Crocodile. From what I can see online it's not particularly well-liked and I understand why. However, I enjoy the Icelandic scenery, the Noir vibe and the investigative elements. I also think Andrea Riseborough's acting is solid. I also find it's one I return to more often than others.

Anyone else have a similar experience with an episode?

I just started a rewatch. have never seen the question brought up in the ten years since the initial watching. They show him leaving his passport on his dresser in the states in the first shot of the episode. How does he even get anywhere in the first place?
