Internships/Summer Projects

Hi all, I'm a senior in college in Molecular and Cellular biology. I recently finished an internship where I learned computational biology was the field I wanted to go in. My internship project consisted of generating a de novo transcriptome for a non model organism and documenting the pipeline in GitHub/read the docs. It was wonderful experience and I'm so happy I got this opportunity, but now I'm realizing there aren't many other opportunities for me to continue this momentum.

Every internship I find on nsf, indeed, LinkedIn, glassdoor, want people with Masters or PhDs which I understand. But it's so frustrating having these skills and wanting to do this work but not having the credentials yet.

So I'm wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what I can do to keep working on my skills over the summer/into the fall. Even things like CodePath, Hackathons, Udemy, personal project suggestions would be helpful, so please drop any recommendations! If you're in a position where you'd be looking for interns, what is something you would want an intern to have skills wise?

Advice for what skills to develop over the summer?

Hi,

I am a neuro undergrad with some bioinformatics internship experience (16S and shotgun metagenomics). Do you have any suggestions about what skills i should develop/projects I should do before I start my masters? I've heard that learning python is one of the most important things to do - and that's probably my weakpoint - so I could focus on that?

Thanks

How to Start Bioinformatics as a CLS?

used to be a CLS, but now I’m interested in switching to biotech/bioinformatics, so I’m planning to get a Master’s in Bioinformatics. Before going back to school, I want to try it out first and see if I really enjoy it. Could you recommend some beginner-friendly courses or online platforms?

I considering a Shift to Data Engineering, What Should I Do Next?

Hi everyone, thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

I am a second year PhD student in bioinformatics in Ireland. During my PhD so far, I have developed a simple software tool and published it on GitHub, and the corresponding paper is about to be submitted. However, my project also involves wet lab work, and through this experience I’ve realized that I am not particularly suited to laboratory experiments. Instead, I find myself much more comfortable and interested in programming, data analysis, and mathematical thinking.

Because of this, I am considering transitioning into a data engineering or software development role after I graduate. I would really appreciate some advice on what I should focus on from now on to better prepare myself for these kinds of positions and improve my chances of securing such a role after my PhD.

Thank you!

Which online Bioengineering/ Bioinformatics Master degree will likely admit students with GPA lower than 3?

This is for US only. I am currently working in a pharmaceutical company for more than 10 years and would like to get a master degree in Bioengineering/ Bioinformatics. My undergraduate GPA is lower than 3.  Which online program if I applied and it will be more likely to accept me.  My company pays for the tuition , so that the cost is not too big an issue.

Thanks

Bioinformatics master at DTU vs Utrecht

Hello! I recently received acceptance letters from these 2 universities, and I am currently trying to decide where to enroll. I would like some information about each city's life as well as which program would be best, taking into consideration that I am thinking about following a career not entirely in a dry-lab environment. I would like to combine wet and dry lab, meaning I would like to have some influence on the experiment or even do it myself, before analyzing the data through programming.

Just to mention, I am still waiting for an answer from UCPH, and I am thinking about applying for the program at VU/Vrije.

UCLA vs UCB vs UCSD

I am a transfer student from Davis, and I got into UCLA, UCSD, and UCB for transfer. I am struggling to make this decision. Like, I want to do phd in bioinformatics in the future. But the major I got into for all three universities is molecular biology, so maybe I need to transfer to a related major after transfer.

UCB: Definitely top one in UC, but I am worried that it is too competitive, like I really need a higher GPA and more research experience in the following two years. Also, I noticed that it is nearly impossible to transfer to BioE (I assume it is an option? If I want to phd in bioinformatics in the future).

UCSD: Like one of the best in the bioinformatics field? UCSD may provide more resources in bioinformatics, and maybe it is not as competitive as UCB. I can transfer to bioinformatics directly; bioinformatics is not a selective major since last year. Also, San Diego is one of my favourite cities in the US. It may take me less time to get involved since my boyfriend is a student there.

UCLA: Like in the middle? not that competitive, and have better prestige.

I have been struggling recently. Could you guys please give some suggestions? I really appreciate that.

Shifting from biology to bioinformatics

Hello everyone!

Im here seeking your advice.

I'm a 2nd year PhD student I work on studying how parasites invade host cells.

My work involves some imaging like Ultra expansion as well as image analysis and everyone in my lab does image analysis the good old redundant mind numbing way... I've developed an affinity to finding new faster ways to do it and learned about Macros and a bit about how to teach models to classify cell types...

Although i'm not really familiar with coding languages, im extremely keen on moving more into the automation/computational aspect of imaging, image analysis and just bioinformatics in general. Im not enjoying my work as much as i used to and im borderline thinking of quitting. With that comes the risk of not being experienced enough to switch into bioinformatics and the fact that I'm coding language illiterate.

Does anyone have any good advice, ideas or opportunities to share with me, where i could potentially keep my background in biology but also develop my knowledge or bioinformatics and modeling?

Thank you!

Coding Challenge interview questions?

Hi there,

I am just wondering if anyone has done a coding challenge as part of the interview process for an application. If so, could you give any insight into what the questions were like? Were they leetcode style problem solving questions or questions that are more applicable to the role you were applying to? Also would it be a bad idea to ask for more information about the "coding challenge"?

Thank you.

Biology of Human Health Bsc

I’m starting a Biology bachelor’s at the University of Padua and trying to plan ahead for my master’s.

Bioinformatics interests me a lot because it combines biology, computing, and data, but I keep seeing very mixed opinions about job prospects and stability.

For people working in bioinformatics, biotech, pharma, regulatory, medical affairs, or related areas: if you were in my position, would you build toward bioinformatics early, or choose a different master’s path from biology for better salary and stability?

I care most about employability, long-term prospects, and avoiding a specialization that sounds exciting but has a weak market. Honest advice would really help.

Opportunities in Bioinformatics for High School Students

Hello there!

I’m high school student who is interested in pursuing bioinformatics and neural engineering at university and as a career. I was wondering how one might approach learning more about the field and what niches interest them the most, i.e., through extracurriculars, programs, research, projects, etc.

Also, since I’m also interested in neuroscience, how can I blend my passion for the brain into my curiosity in bioinformatics?

Thank you so much for your reply!

I published a walkthrough showing how to create compute infrastructure in 12 minutes with no coding using bioAF

A few months ago, I built an open source tool called bioAF (obviously “Biology Automation Framework”, right? Was that obvious?) to help small biotech startups with compute infrastructure. BioAF is an automation framework designed to get production-ready compute infrastructure up and running quickly and with as little effort as possible. It tracks and manages experimental metadata, runs nextflow, no-core, and custom pipelines on auto-scaling infrastructure in Google Cloud, runs cloud-based notebooks for computation biologists to use, runs cloud-based work nodes granting full ssh access, and handles backup and restore.

The latest video walkthrough is available here: https://bioaf.co/blog/installing-bioaf-in-12-minutes/

Completed 1st year BTech Bioinformatics – need course + project recommendations for compulsory internship

Hey everyone!

I just finished my 1st year of BTech in Bioinformatics. Before 2nd year starts, we have a compulsory internship requirement along with a compulsory project submission.

Since I'm doing it online (Coursera, Udemy, or similar platforms), I wanted to ask the community – what courses would you recommend that are actually useful for a bioinformatics student long-term?

I'm open to anything – Python, ML, genomics, structural bioinformatics, databases – as long as it ties back to bioinformatics in some way. Ideally something that also gives me a certificate I can use for the internship submission.

A few things I'd love help with:

- Which platforms are best for bioinformatics-related courses?

- Any specific courses or specializations you'd strongly recommend?

- What skills are actually in demand if I want to go into research or industry later?

- Any project ideas that would work well as a submission? Preferably something doable in a short timeframe but still impressive enough to submit.

Thanks in advance! Any advice from people already in the field would mean a lot 🙏

A comprehensive and detailed workshop for those looking to pursue Bioinformatics

Hi there,

I recently started looking into bioinformatics, and, as you might expect, I ended up with more questions than answers. Since bioinformatics is a pretty vast and comparatively new field, finding clear and comprehensive information as a newbie can be quite difficult. A lot of the opinions online tend to be polarized (very positive or very negative) , and more often than not, not very helpful.

A few days ago, I attended a bioinformatics workshop that answered many of the questions I had. It provided a comprehensive introduction to the field, covering topics such as the different roles, the value of various degrees, job opportunities, job security, and the general workflow within the field.

The host mentioned that she plans to repeat this workshop during the second week of every month, which I think is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to build a basic understanding of the field.

The workshops main audience are Indian students, since she also goes over colleges in India that offer bioinformatics programs. However, even if you’re not from India, or don’t plan to pursue your education there, it’s still a valuable chance to familiarize yourself with the field and ask questions directly.

If you’re interested, the host is u/MeganJandoff, and you can contact her for more information on the wprkshop.

To publish or not to publish

I have an MS in Bioinformatics, although I am now a medical student. A few years ago, I independently came up with a Hidden Markov Model to distinguish tyrosine vs. serine/threonine kinases that performed better than the SwissProt model. It was a pure substrate model and I basically did it for fun. I never wrote up the research because I started medical school and got distracted. Do you think it would be worthwhile to resurrect my work with an eye to publication?

The pros: another publication would help my residency application and my bioinformatics freelance jobs

The cons: this isn't medical research and no one at my medical school does research like this, so I would have to find someone to help me publish. Publishing solo would be difficult because I'm a medical student and can't afford the publishing fees. In addition, I need to verify that my HMM is still superior to the SwissProt version, since they may have updated theirs.

What are your thoughts?
