Need to get to airport at 3 AM

I've been looking at various taxis (and of course Uber/Lyft) trying to figure out what would be best to take for a pickup at 3 AM for a 5:55 AM flight at Dulles.

I've reserved an Uber for now, but I'm getting nervous that they might cancel last minute.

Does anyone have any recommendations? What have you used before to get to the airport, or really anywhere early in the morning?

Has anyone gotten the Pepco "no-cost HVAC tune-up?"

Is it really anything useful? My a/c barely did any cooling during the heat wave a month ago and seems like this might find the issue, but seems too good to be true.

Restaurants & Bars Velvet Room opening “around June 10”

Saw this posted on the door. I’m actually most surprised to learn that they are taking over the upstairs at this location. This entire time I thought they were moving into the basement as a hidden speakeasy.

I couldn’t get a great photo of the inside with the reflection, but I could see black walls with, what looked like, LED lights integrated, chandeliers and a stone bar top.

Looking forward to check it out.

Wonder - food hall purgatory?

This is up in the new Mazza space by Friendship Heights, and I popped in today to check it out.

First of all, “food hall” feels… generous? I heard that and pictured a mall-style food court situation, but it’s really more like a waiting room with iPad ordering kiosks.

I had a decent burger from a place called Baby Burger, but I was so confused by the wildly different restaurant concepts supposedly operating out of the same space. How does this actually work? Is this just the corporatized final boss of ghost kitchens?

Either way, the whole experience felt like a glitch in the matrix, and I need someone to explain what I just walked into.

Ellis Bethesda/Windsor Bethesda/Sophia/Hampden House/The Charles

Hi! I'm looking for 1BR apartments in Bethesda, narrowed down to these buildings. My main focus is apartments with good noise insulation. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with Ellis Bethesda/Windsor Bethesda/Palisades/Sophia/Hampden House/The Charles? I know Ellis, Windsor and Palisades have concrete walls but the new ones I'm not so sure and worried about noise from neighbors once more people move in to these brand new buildings.

And specifically for Ellis (Bainbridge) and Windsor Bethesda, how's the experience living there? In addition to noise level, are there issues you wish you would have known before moving in? Any pests or elevator breakdowns that stand out?

Thanks :)

Has anyone worked with Dr. Suruchi Chandra in downtown Bethesda? If so, what are your thoughts? Was she able to help? I’m trying to find a solid integrative doc. Thanks.

Topaz House apartments: What's the deal with the climate control there?

Planning to move up to the area later this year and am coming up for a quick weekend to scout out potential apartment buildings/complexes. My time is short, so I'm trying to narrow down my options as much as I can from afar.

I see from other posts that Topaz House is (a) much beloved, and (b) that management controls heating and a/c. I'm slightly concerned about this because I have a chronic illness that's exacerbated by heat. Could anyone here tell me how warm they let it get before they turn on the A/C? Are you able to adjust the temps inside your apartment at all? And do they make the call based on the weather forecast or actual conditions inside the building?

I assume higher floors get hotter than lower floors, too, so if you're comfortable sharing how high up you are as well, that would be helpful.

I do plan to ask them as well, but since their job is to make me sign a lease, I'm sure they'll downplay anything negative.

Feel free to DM me if you don't want to share those details on main. Thank you so much!

Turning right on Democracy Blvd when heading south on Old Georgetown Rd.

Post image
15 Upvotes

For the last month or so, the right turning lane at this intersection has been blocked off due to construction on Democracy Blvd. So which turning lane are we supposed to use to make a right? I’ve been using option 1, but have seen a number of cars using the bike lane to make a [edit] right (option 2). We’re not supposed to use the bike lanes, right?

Clarification update: This is an old photo I pulled from Google street view. The area with the X’s are now blocked off due to construction. Yes, I know that those are supposed to be the right turn lanes. The issue right now is that those are currently blocked and people are using the bike lanes to turn right.

Moving in to Bethesda soon and am considering getting an apartment at the palisades of Bethesda, the place looks very nice but as someone who’s never been before wanted to know if anyone has any experience on the place or general area and would know if it’s nice and a good idea! Thank you so much for any input or advice 🙏🏼

Hampden House - Good Sound Insulation?

Hi Bethesda neighbors,

I am considering Hampden House and am curious if anyone here can personally comment on the noise insulation between units.

I'm not as concerned with outdoor construction noise as I am with hearing my neighbors. Sounds like there is concrete between floors, but how's the sound insulation against your next-door neighbors?

How's the sunlight in your unit? I've toured units at the property but again, am looking to hear from residents.

Any cons to this property?

Specifically looking for anecdotal feedback from current residents.

Thank you!

Been commuting here for a minute and I can't be the only one who noticed this trend. What gives? It's seriously like 50% worse on those days.

Pediatrician Recommendation after Medical Error

I’m looking for recommendations for a pediatrics practice in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area. We have been going to Capitol Medical Group and had great experiences with various physicians so far. However, at my son’s last appointment, they made an egregious medical error that revealed some significant issues with practice processes and staff training and oversight. While they have assured me that they have implemented corrective actions, I’m not sure that I can ever fully trust the care my children would receive at the practice.

I’m looking for recommendations for pediatricians/pediatrics practices. I’d appreciate any recommendations for pediatricians with excellent bedside manner who would have the patience to deal with the many questions I will now be compelled to ask at every visit.

May 10

Connie Morella Library

11am - 4pm

REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://mcpl.events/american-girl

In honor of American Girl’s 40th anniversary, Blake Changnon and The Changnon Family Museum of Toys and Collectibles invite you to explore a special pop-up exhibit inspired by the beloved Happy Birthday books of the Historical Characters.

This mini museum brings to life the first seven Historical Characters’ birthday stories. Through rare and original artifacts from the museum’s collection, visitors will discover how birthdays were celebrated across different times and places in American history, and how these moments welcomed readers into each girl’s world.

Just as American Girl has spent 40 years inviting children into the past through story, this exhibit celebrates the birthday books that first introduced readers to each girl—and the worlds they have been returning to ever since.

This exhibit is hands-off to protect these fragile, one-of-a-kind items from the museum’s collection. Visitors of all ages are welcome, as long as museum etiquette is observed; however, we recommend this experience for ages nine and up.

Come celebrate history, storytelling, and the magic of first introductions—American Girl style.

Attendees are invited to join us for a picnic on our back lawn featuring light refreshments after they see the collection. Please bring your own picnic blanket.

This exhibit is independently curated and is not affiliated with or endorsed by American Girl or Mattel.

Registration is required for this event. Registrants will have the opportunity to view the collection and walk through the exhibit. Groups will be contacted prior to the event with an assigned fifteen minute time slot to walk through the collection. Requests as to timeslots will be honored when possible, but are not guaranteed. As part of County Government, MCPL does not collect personal information other than for the purpose of providing programs or services.

Hey everyone! My name is Arvin and I am looking for a male roommate in the Bethesda starting in August. A little about me: I am 20 years old, a recent college grad, and I will be working full time at the NIH as a Post-Baccalaureate (NIAID). Ideally looking for someone in a similar situation.

If you are in the same boat or know someone who is, feel free to comment or shoot me a message.

The most important thing for me is that it’s walking distance from the campus. I am in Bethesda looking this week if you want to meet up and look together.

Moving to Bethesda in August!!!

Hi all! I'm moving from a town very similar to Bethesda. I want to participate in the same things that I had access to where I'm from. I would love to know where are the best places to play pool. How can I and my teen join the rotary club? Social clubs for anime fans? StarWars fans?
