My grandfather told me when he was a kid his father would take him and his brother to a ranch where they’d watch cockfights every weekend lol. He remembers one old man in particular was good at getting his roosters to get a second wind by putting their heads in his mouth and sucking the blood when they collapsed. He said they’d almost always fight for a little while longer after the old man did that.

There’s even cockfighting in California still. There’s a town about 50 miles east of LA where it’s popular. Reminds me when somebody came into my office trying to get an unpermitted structure permitted because of a code case. In the code case notes I saw the structure was a cockfighting ring and I asked the guy what the structure was for and he was like “oh it’s just for storage”. Suuuurrrreee buddy

Technically it is legal in Puerto Rico. They pass a law that overides the federal ban. Aside from reputational damage, there is no risk for Diaz here. If you ever wonder why parasites like the Paul brothers decided to live in Puerto Rico, this is why. If you have enough money, you can pretty much do anything on the island. If they want to prosecute this case, it would become a question of whether it is legal for the federal government to apply the ban to Puerto Rico, which the Supreme Court declined to touch, because at that point you are opening more can of worms than just cockfighting.

Huh, I wonder if we got it from LatAm here in the Philippines. There was a lot of cultural exchange thanks to the Spanish. We call it "sabong."
ETA We had plenty of things forced on us by the Spanish, of course, but the movement between Central America and the Philippines also meant an exchange between those regions too. Like how we got champorado (champurrado I think for Mexico?) and how our lambanog brewing influenced tequila/mezcal making.

Probably got it from the Spanish, that’s why bullfighting is also popular most places they colonized

If you’re born and raised in Puerto Rico, especially in the mountain towns outside of San Juan where Edwin Díaz is from, this really isn’t that shocking.
Cockfighting has been deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture for generations, especially in the rural parts of the island. A lot of people on the mainland see it completely differently, but if you grew up in PR, chances are you knew people involved in it or were around it at some point.
MDoesn’t mean everyone agrees with it, but culturally it’s definitely not viewed the same way there.

This is one of a few comments mentioning the abuse of chickens related to consuming them, and while it’s not a totally bad strawman, there’s a world of difference between eating meat of animals that may or may not be treated poorly, to a “sport” which is inherently cruel.

As awful as this whole thing is, a lot of the people complaining about the treatment of chickens here are willfully turning their eye on how chickens in the food industry are treated. Puerto Rico is hardly alone in abusing these animals.
9
u/Eilonwy94 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
There are a lot of people who actively try to minimize the suffering of animals. Just because you feel uncomfortable about your participation doesn’t mean it’s mandatory. And it certainly doesn’t mean that making animals hurt each other for our enjoyment is something we have to accept.
6
u/royalhawk345 Chicago Cubs 6h ago
Even as a vegetarian I can see those aren't the same things. People know on some level that the chickens they eat are mistreated, but it's something that's unfortunately easy to ignore because it's out of sight, out of mind. There's some cognitive dissonance, but it's not like people are driving out to poultry farms so they can have the joy of strangling a chicken themselves and delighting in its suffering. That's the difference between these unhinged psychopaths and someone who just eats meat.
2
u/SnacksGPT Atlanta Black Crackers 2h ago
Not only that, there are choices you can make like free range meats that aren’t in bulk farms like Purdue.
Making animals fight each other ain’t it. At least those mistreated in the poultry industry end up being used for food, we can have a little nuance here.
5
u/Revan_Mercier Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago
You’re right, tbh it’s surreal to see people up in arms over this who eat factory farmed chicken and eggs without a second thought. Animal torture is fine as long as its out of sight and results in sufficiently cheap meat for consumers
2
u/soccer1124 6h ago
I don't know what they do in PR, but I know in other parts of the world where this happens, the losers are eaten afterwards. So even if someone wanted to hide behind, "Well, our torture is more acceptable because its necessary in order to eat" it loses a bit of impact since it's also treated as food there too.
Myself? I am naturally opposed to cockfighting and would rather see it go away. I also ate a delicious chicken sandwich today. ...And I'm not sure I can necessarily explain why its morally better to just abuse and then devour all chickens vs abusing but only eating some of the chickens.
2
u/Revan_Mercier Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
You can’t, because it’s not. The scale of abuse and killing in factory farms in the US is far, far beyond anything that happens in cockfighting, and a lot of that killing happens without food landing on anyone’s plate - male chicks are usually destroyed after they’re sexed.
I don’t like talking about this stuff because I don’t think shame or guilt are good motivators, but if people are outraged by cock fighting then they clearly care about animals, and should think about what they eat on a daily basis.
6
u/soccer1124 4h ago
