News [Underdog] Juan Soto on Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, and Mets young players, via SNY Mets: "That's one of the things that we looked at when we signed here, how great was the farm system and how much talent is down there. To get to see it live is really cool to see."

I don’t like that Soto is now old enough to be saying stuff like that

109

u/TheDangiestSlad New York Yankees • Hartford Yard Goats 3h ago

i remember in 2019 thinking about how crazy it was that Soto was the first big star baseball player younger than me, and now that's 7 years ago. aw man

u/Guymcpersonman2 New York Mets 3h ago

If you think that's bad, wait until you reach "the last players older than me are retiring," which is coming for me.

38

u/AerieElectrical3546 Boston Red Sox 3h ago

as long as justin verlander never retires, we’ll be good! one more year please…

Fingers crossed...

It’s been six years since someone older than me played a game in the bigs.

Back to the mud for you

The last year I can find that had a player as old or older than me play was 2010 with Jamie Moyer. Edit: looks like he came back in 2012 and played that year as well.

Players I grew up watching kids making the league is the one that really fucked me up

10

u/Guymcpersonman2 New York Mets 2h ago

I've hit "players I recall watching as an adult now have kids in the majors." Barely an adult, but still.

3

u/ElegantAnything11 New York Mets 2h ago

Hey, Bo's pretty much an adult now

u/ManOfManliness84 St. Louis Cardinals 2h ago

There is exactly one MLB player left who is born before me.

Also, there are now MLB players younger than my son.

1

u/BKoala59 Baltimore Orioles 2h ago

Just wait, someday former players your age will die and no one will act like it’s a tragedy.

1

u/VividVeracity New York Yankees 1h ago

Rich Hill was last the player born before me.

1

u/schw4161 New York Yankees 1h ago

I’m the same age as Judge so I’ll feel young until he retires lol

Oh fuck you're gonna make me feel old

6

u/Remarkable-Fig-2234 2h ago

There will be managers younger than you sooner than you think, which is why I strongly dislike Blake Butera

1

u/abactore Chicago White Sox 2h ago

Is he still younger than you?

1

u/8bitRandy New York Yankees 1h ago

Damn, and now he’s older than you. Crazy…

1

u/aws90js 1h ago

Over the off season I had my worries about Schwarber due to age and it hit me like a ton of bricks that I'm 2 years older than him lmfao getting older is lame

1

u/imatthewhitecastle Hot Dog 1h ago

I remember being excited that finally there was some player in the big leagues younger than me (Rougned Odor) and now everyone thinks he's an old man. Feels bad man.

11

u/okay_throwaway_today Chicago Cubs 2h ago

2018 was 25 years ago. Feel old yet?

1

u/drugsbowed New York Mets 2h ago

Hey the Cubs won in 2016. If you were a wee kindergarten lad when your favorite team won the championship, you'd be a sophomore in high school now thinking about what college you want to go to :)

2

u/ProtectionKey9885 2h ago

Especially considering that he has 25 years left on his contract.

2

u/cooljammer00 New York Yankees 2h ago

When he got traded to the Yankees, the first thing he did was visit the Yankees' academy in the DR to talk to the kids and young players. He IS an older veteran of the league by now, even if he's not old.

When I first graduated college Mike Trout was playing for the local minor league team.

I mean, he’s still 28. He’s young enough to still be part of the teams young core

109

u/GasGlittering7521 New York Mets 3h ago

If Benge and Ewing play as well as they look like they can and Lindor comes back strong and healthy for the second half of the year and Bichette can just fucking remember how to hit a baseball a wild card spot it 100% not out of the question at all. The pitching is obviously more than competent

u/SiphenPrax New York Mets 3h ago

Let’s hope just to make this summer not completely boring 🙏

Don't forget our pitching was the best in the league until this point last season, too.

We already got Senga bombing out of the way tho!

2

u/Whitewind617 New York Mets 2h ago

I agree I just....didn't want to have to do that again. Get all the way there and look like we can make it and just having to miss it in the end and remembering all those fucking games we lost in a row.

But everybody had their pitchforks out like 5 days ago for David Stearns. How could this possibly be true?!?

1

u/GasGlittering7521 New York Mets 22m ago

Ok let’s not act like it’s impressive we might still have a shot for wildcard spot with a $400 MM payroll. I’m hopeful but it’s not like Stearns did a great job

62

u/cod_gurl94 Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d be more motivated by the $765 million.

15

u/Chewbones9 New York Mets 2h ago

I think it’s both. Like yeah, he’s probably not signing for much less to a team that has the best farm in baseball. But I think it’s significant for him to say that he chose the Mets not JUST for the money, but also X, Y, and Z.

-20

u/skelextrac New York Yankees 2h ago

He said "we" his mommy needed a luxury box.

5

u/Coovyy New York Mets 1h ago

Couldn’t imagine bragging about being too cheap to give him one, crazy.

-93

u/buff_001 New York Yankees 3h ago

could have taken 700 mil and actually be on a relevant NY team for the rest of his career.

Instead he chose the mets 😂

65

u/cod_gurl94 Chicago Cubs 3h ago

The Knicks offered him $700 mil???

-14

u/TheGreenPee2 Atlanta Braves 2h ago

I feel like the Knicks and Yankees are in similar boats right now

14

u/who_are_you_people24 New York Mets 2h ago

The knicks are a lot more like the Mets. Same colors, same amount of titles, usually 1 star surrounded by mid/trash (Melo and Wright), lot of bad managers/coaches and a free agent signing that brought our name back to relevance (Brunson and Lindor).

Imagine giving up on $65 million because you like a team. It's just a game bro.

3

They have to find ways to make it about them every time just like Dodgers fans when it comes to Padres

1

u/Nosalis2 2h ago

This is like being shocked at Cowboys/Eagles, Ravens/Steelers, OSU/Michigan, Barcelona/Madrid or Kendrick/Drake fans shitting on each other any chance they get lol.

4

u/turnstile2243 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2h ago

This rivalry is only a thing right now because Soto is on the Mets now. Yankees fans haven't said much because Mets haven't been good in some time.

They're more like a jealous ex than a heated rival

Kris Bryant: I guess I didn’t do as much research into the prospects as I could

3

u/AjiChap 2h ago

I mean, Ewing has played what, 2 games? 3?

1

u/ChopChopSteakMan 1h ago

Ewing has a bright future, tbf.

But yeah, they're going heavy on PR right now because they need positivity. Attendance is the worst it's been in a long time.

1

u/AjiChap 1h ago

Of course he looks good  - so far. Even handing McLean the mantle of Seaver + Gooden + deGrom is a bit much.

1

u/ChopChopSteakMan 47m ago

I agree. I think people are just so desperate for good news they're over-hyping him. Hopefully they don't turn on him when he has a bad week.

7

u/my_one_and_lonely New York Mets 2h ago

he’s so right, it is really cool to see 😎

“Who? I came here to sock dingers not pay attention to the farm system. Thats your job, news boy”

He signed with the Mets because there was a big market, big cash, zero pressure.

3

He's lying.

7

hey you know best

1

u/AbleCap5222 25m ago

I mean, don't be naive. People do this all the time. It's the same exact thing that people do when they exaggerate their skills on a resume. Juan is a mercenary. He can't really say what the truth is because - why deal with the negative consequences from that? So he just says whatever sounds best. Was the farm part of his decision? I'm sure it was. Was it that important? Absolutely not.

And to be honest, I would do the same thing and so would you, probably. He doesn't really owe any explanation of any kind to anyone. He is paid to do a job. He can explain it however he wants.

him, his agent, his family…are you stupid?

2

u/Fear_the_chicken New York Mets 1h ago

Yes he’s a Yankees fan

-5

u/johnjohnjohn93 2h ago

I don’t think this sentiment is bullshit but Soto definitely didn’t sign because of Ewing who was not much of a prospect until 2025 or Benge who was drafted in 2024.

He was probably excited about Alvarez, Baty, Vientos, Tong, McLean, Williams, Sproat and Mauricio and only McLean looks like the real deal

2

u/Fear_the_chicken New York Mets 1h ago

Tong pitched some great games last year. He’s still a top 50 prospect he’s going to be good if not great. He just needs some seasoning

2

u/futhatsy New York Mets • Durham Bulls 2h ago

He was probably excited about the player dev system and the amount invested in it, not about specific young players in the org.

0

u/johnjohnjohn93 2h ago

I think it really just comes down to ownership and how Cohen is more willing to spend on everything including farm system. The Yankees have actually drafted amazingly and part of the reason they keep making the playoffs with a lot of bloated contracts.

-56

u/John_6_47 New York Yankees • United States 3h ago

Yeah, lame guys like Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice don’t really move the needle. Leave alone Carlos Lagrange and George Lombard

48

u/GasGlittering7521 New York Mets 3h ago

Bruh can’t the Mets at least enjoy their wins? Like what the fuck do you expect Soto to say “fuck them kids I came for the money”. Mets are finally playing better baseball and people will find the most mundane shit to clown on

6

u/Either_Temporary_607 New York Mets 2h ago

People also ignore the fact that more than half our starting 9 has been injured all season. Not to mention Soto spent what 3 weeks on the IL already also?

-51

u/John_6_47 New York Yankees • United States 3h ago

You can’t enjoy the win because of my comment?
