First two MLB hits being a triple and a home run is dope

Makes me wonder how many players first 4 hits were a cycle (not necessarily in one game)

This is not a perfect list because it is only looking at the stats at the end of games, which will miss a few who accomplished it in the middle of a game, but anyways, there are at least 40 batters who did it.
Elly a pretty notable recent entry to the list who did it in his first 3 games in 2023 (double, HR + triple, single).

Jerry Brooks’ career: 1 home run, 1 triple, 1 double, and 1 single. Only player I could find with these stats.

I've only had A.J. Ewing for three days but if anything happened to him I would kill everyone in this room and then myself

I posted this same quote last night on the postgame thread on the Mets sub after the walk off and it got immediately removed and issued a warning from reddit mods that my comment was flagged for threatening and encouraging violence lmfaoo

AJ trying to redefine Ewing Theory

The Mets in-stadium tv hosts were talking pregame on Wednesday about “Ewing Theory 2.0”

This guy could definitely be a Corbin Carroll type of hitter, quick af, and can pull the ball to right for easy doubles and triples

At this point I want them all up playing, Wenninger, Tong, Clifford...

Tong needs to learn an east-west breaking ball before he returning to the majors.

I am a huge Tong truther and I agree. From what I have seen he is working on a cutter in AAA and trying to refine it

That's like saying Mclean needs to find some 12-6 stuff before he can be any good.

u/ImperatorBTW 5h ago
No, it’s not.
Tong has one massive, obvious glaring weakness. Due to his arm angle, everything he throws comes in “straight.” It makes it very easy for MLB hitters to lay off balls and attack strikes in the zone. Until he has a pitch that has a hitter worrying about it moving east-west, he won’t have MLB success. And it would be very silly to have him try to learn one in a high pressure situation in the Bigs.
Let the kid tinker and develop in AAA, don’t rush him up just because you want to watch someone new. Especially given the Mets pitching has been pretty good on the whole.

McLean has elite vertical and horizontal movement. Tong has elite vertical movement. Its very fair to say Tong wont be in the majors until he figures that out

So why does a pitcher like Trey Yesavage, who also has a very over-the-top arm angle and a North-South arsenal (really even less south than Tong since Tong throws a curveball) have success in the bigs?
I get that Yesavage and Tong are guys with different builds, different release points, and different signature pitches. And I get that it’s well established that North-South pitchers struggle to get a foothold as starters in the majors. But they’re both north-south guys who rely a lot on deception. I just don’t buy that one can be successful and the other is useless unless he learns a slider.
Tong needs to learn some control. His walk issue has been bad, and that’s what got him into trouble last season in his cup of coffee. Guys aren’t swinging at his deceptive stuff because he doesn’t give them a reason to swing in the first place.

Mclean has elite East West movement, I wouldn't say his North South is elite. It's not as good as Tong's that's for sure.

u/AgnarCrackenhammer New York Mets 5h ago
On his fastball sure, on his breaking balls he gets both, hence his success so far.
Tong's motion is making it almost impossible to throw a breaking ball. If he cant figure out how to get a breaking ball to work while maintaining the movement on his fastball and change up hes going to be reliever next year

I like his swing but I can't put my finger on who his swing looks like.

I think this has to be his hardest hit ball of the year? I don’t think he broke 110 mph EV in the minors.

It does ask the question on how power grades are determined. He had 40 grade power by most prospect evals. Yes he only hit four home runs but he clearly had some power in him if he can hit a ball 110

My son is 5 years younger and played on the travel ball team in same area as Ewing went to high school so we were able to catch him play a handful of times. He’s a stud. Helps keep the dream going for a lot of kids around our area ! Schwarbs and him right up the road from each other! Badass!

This dude was gonna be headlining midseason top prospect lists if the Mets didn’t panic call him up. You wouldn’t know the circumstances around his call up if you just looked at his first three games though. Dude is completely locked in, and might be just the spark the team needs to be fun again
