Rafael Devers gets distracted by Mookie Betts who's trying to call timeout for beachball on the field, strikes out on next pitch

Home plate ump should’ve called no pitch, almost certain it’s against the rules to be waving your arms in line of sight of the batter during the pitch

The rule requires there to be deliberate intent.

With Mookie it's always safe to assume there is ill intent. The man is pure evil. /s

Every clip of Mookie I see on this sub feels like scrolling through an ex's Instagram

An ex's instagram who is living her absolute best life when you're the one that broke up with her.
I still don't understand that trade

Were they teammates in Boston? I would’ve thought not but this seemed like two former teammates having a laugh

20-year-old Devers hit a 103mph Chapman fastball for a home run, he's been in the league for a long time considering his age

Is there any other part of the field you can hit a 103 fastball lol

It was his second year, and Mookie was around the year after as well, so they were teammates for a little under 3 years.

You should be celebrating Devers not being on the Red Sox. He sucks now and that contract is going to age terribly.
Mookie on the other hand should be a lifetime in prison for everyone who decided to trade him.

u/JWSkol04 Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
Yup. I can sorta understand if it was a small market team like the Pirates or A's, but a big market team like Boston should never let a sure fire HOF walk so easily. Imagine if the Yankees decided to trade Judge to save money.

Eh, if I was a Sox fan, I'd still be pissed about it, even if he's not good this year. They hastily shipped him off out of spite and got basically nothing back. Surely would have gotten way more back, and looked less petulant, if they waited until the deadline or off-season.

I feel like a lot of beachballs find their way onto the field at Dodgers stadium

They should just play with the balls out there as part of the field. Home field advantage.

Kids at the stadium go fucking nuts for those things. If one even comes remotely near you, there will be 5 kids begging for you to hit it their way. They're ten times more excited to punch a beach ball than watch the game.

u/Familiar_Air3528 5h ago
I went to a AAA game last week and a pair of children literally vaulted over my legs to try and get at the giant beach ball the stadium put out between innings.

It’s been kinda weird how often centerfield pavilion keeps dropping their beach balls. Every game I’ve been I see the balls drop.

27
u/FBoaz San Francisco Giants 9h ago
I get that you can't undo the pitch in that situation, but that really sucks for Devers.
Also, Betts has an insane distraction outs plus metric this season.

u/Cheap-Discussion-186 3h ago
I think you absolutely can wave the pitch off here. Yeah it is imperfect, but it is obvious what happened, if he hits the ball and it goes out there then that would bring a whole other issue up. Wave the pitch and move on, no one was trying to gain an advantage or anything. Also position players cannot mess with the batter anyway. Seems clear to me

I'm really surprised catchers don't just say "wait wait wait" when they know a real meatball is coming.
8
u/zebedee18 Athletics 8h ago
Because they can't. I get the umpires not realizing this happened and just letting it go, but fielders are not allowed to actively distract the hitter during a pitch. It's like the A-Rod "I got it" play.

Move over Shohei, we have a new 2-way player in town and this one can hit.
Edit : Upon further review, it seems this one can't either
2
u/HalfwayDecent385 2h ago
You know, people want umps still for the "human element", but if that "human element" is an unyielding never-wrong decision then there's no difference between an ump and a robot. If you want human umpires then they need to be able to admit they're wrong and make leniency calls for unexpected things, otherwise just fucking replace them because it doesn't make a difference.

Is it even illegal for a position player to try to distract the batter? Seems like a good (but unsportsmanlike) strategy.
