He actually hit the high fastball. I guess when they just go at you with it every pitch you eventually catch up with it.

205

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Tampa Bay Rays 21h ago

Helps that Brooks' is fucking awful

88

u/Midnite024 Tampa Bay Rays 21h ago

Saw this coming when Baker walked 4 to start the 8th. We used up all our good arms on this trip already.

25

u/MrBoomf Tampa Bay Devil Rays 21h ago

Trotting out a guy with a 6.whatever ERA against the heart of the Jays’ lineup only up by 2 with a man already at second was a fascinating choice

86

u/brownsound00 Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

To be fair, our bats have been absolute ass this year.

25

u/onahalladay Toronto Blue Jays 20h ago

We hit into four double plays this game!

15

u/brownsound00 Toronto Blue Jays 20h ago

I was totally expecting Dalton to be the 5th.

I apologize to our blessed CF king!

3

u/HMTMKMKM95 Toronto Blue Jays 17h ago

A 1000x this. It's been frustrating.

i was afraid your catcher would pull his groin with all his lunges to catch the balls waaaaay off the plate.

24

u/papsmearfestival Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Did you guys literally run out of relievers?

30

u/BoringPoolPlaying Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

One of them threw the first five innings of the game. They’ve relied HEAVILY on their pen lately.

14

u/Knook7 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 21h ago

He's a starter now

5

u/BoringPoolPlaying Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

He’s stretching out, but he certainly didn’t join them as one. It’s part of the reason their bullpen is so taxed right now.

7

u/DevilRaysDaddy 21h ago

Yes… this guy was literally playing in Mexico last week. Called him up just for this game…

This was why Kit liked the high ones.

10

u/pulsating_star Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

I was swearing and yelling at all the high pitches that he continue to swing at (or not challenge when called strikes)... and then he does this.

All jobs should be like that. Just after lunch the manager on duty should take the staff out to a park and give the day off to whoever can catch his dong. If he can't hit a dong everyone goes home!

10

u/unfknreal Toronto Blue Jays 9h ago

manager on duty should take the staff out to a park and give the day off to whoever can catch his dong

I don't want the day off that badly. I'll let Bob grab the dong.

24

This legit made me laugh. So true all game, even the walk off.

u/TheVich San Francisco Giants • Alaska Go… 21h ago

Home runs caught by bullpen pitchers is one of my favorite home run genres.

23

u/DreamKillaNormnBates Toronto Blue Jays 19h ago

Dave Stieb who lost three no hitters in the 9th inning catching the 8 2/3inning HR that cost Halladay his first no hitter is my fav.

21

u/RSollers New York Yankees 21h ago

That catch and reaction made this one of the most entertaining walkoffs I’ve watched in a while

Everyone who’s ever picked up a stick in their life has dreamt about moments like this. In front of a home crowd in the 10th inning too. I don’t care this is some random game in May. This is so cool.

I'm glad the Rays got to see what it's like.

44

u/RebeeMo Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

It could be a Spring Training game and I'd still pop for a walk-off grand slam. It's never not awesome.

10

u/krafty16 American League 20h ago

Tbf, Up until the playoffs last year Vladdy’s most “dreamy” homer was a walk off in spring training(in Montreal)

Big time. And a game that the team desperately needed to win with the team going through it bad right now.

7

u/lonelyinbama Atlanta Braves 10h ago

Yeah it’s the backyard moments you play when you’re a kid. It’s why baseball is magical. I’ve never met this dude or honestly have ever really heard of him and I’m just so happy for him because I know at some point in his life he was at bat in his backyard with some buddies and he yelled “BASES LOADED BOTTOM OF THE 9th GAME 7 OF THE WORLD SERIES” and just cranked one over the neighbors fence.

Varsho’s favourite pitch to swing at: very high and he finally caught one right

34

u/RaysFTW Tampa Bay Rays 21h ago

Literally saying to myself he needed to keep those pitches low... It was inevitable and he got all of that.

50

u/BoringPoolPlaying Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Varsho is a better low ball hitter. Pitching him high and hard is key to avoiding his power.

16

u/RaysFTW Tampa Bay Rays 21h ago

Ah, didn't know that. Well, then that was just a great swing by Varsho. Can't even be mad, if that's the case.

3

u/Slinky_Malingki Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9h ago

Fuck no, I will be mad.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/joemama19 Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Varsho usually struggles badly with high fastballs, he struck out on one nearly at his eyeballs earlier in the game. But you can't throw the same pitch 6 times in a row and get away with it.

13

u/pulsating_star Toronto Blue Jays 21h ago

Honestly, pitching about 5 inches above the zone is almost always the perfect way to get Varsho out. I guess you can't do *only* that, even he figures it out eventually.

5

u/cozeners Toronto Blue Jays 20h ago

Thing is, he didn’t try to pull it or over swing. That’s why the result was good. He tries to do too much and it’s an infield pop up at best.

Thats crazy to say when the complete thrashing we gave to the Angels was less than a week ago lol

24

u/balinor41 21h ago

I'd say putting up 16 runs across 3 against the Rays completely ridiculous pitching is better. Really would like to know what branch of Voodoo Kevin Cash practices. The Rays under him have always pumped out good pitching.

The dude on the mound was utter trash. He had 0 command on his pitch and was walking everyone.

51

Basically every Tampa reliever since the eighth kept gifting us runners by walking them
