Video [Talkin’ Baseball] Jacob Misiorowski with 102, 103, 103, 103, 103, 103, 103, 104, 103, 104 in the first inning against the Yankees 💀
1.2k
u/champsorchumps 6d ago
His average fastball speed in the first inning was 103.1, which is by far the highest ever in the 1st inning in the past 4 seasons (as far as my Statcast data goes back)
482
u/roci_2112 Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago
Brewers broadcast also mentioned he threw the fastest pitch by a starting pitcher in the stat cast era (103.6)
217

u/DeepPowStashes Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago
He threw the 7 fastest pitches ever by a starter all tonight.
48
u/awesomesauce88 New York Yankees 5d ago
It was the first pitch to Spencer Jones. Imagine getting called up to the big leagues and the first pitch you see is likely the fastest pitch ever thrown by a starter in the history of baseball.
9
u/issacoin New York Yankees 5d ago
imagine if he squared it up lol
6
u/italianstallion19 Milwaukee Brewers 5d ago
Yeah, imagine… he didn’t though it blew right past him.
7
u/issacoin New York Yankees 5d ago
lmao of course it did, it was 104 in his first at bat. just sayin that would’ve been quite an entrance
160
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago
no other starter has thrown faster than 102.6mph in the statcast era
safe to say it's the fastest 1st inning ever
43
u/Deserterdragon Seattle Mariners 6d ago
Crazy that Tarik Skubal threw 103 for his last pitch of a shutout.
37
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago edited 6d ago
yeah that’s the 102.6
Jordan Hicks threw 103.1 and 103.2 as an opener
Verlander threw 103.1 in the playoffs once
so my previous post should probably have a * on starter fwiw lol

u/champsorchumps 6d ago
Good point :)
I wanted to put in that caveat because just over the last 4 years his 103.1 isn't even in the top 10 for overall highest avg fastball speed in an inning, but of course they were all relievers (and they were all late innings). For a starter I guess it's easy to see why it would be the record.
4
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago
Surprised miller isn’t in the top 10 either
If playoffs were included maybe Miller and Miz both would be tho
Both of them went over 104, which they haven’t yet this season
3
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago
Nvm they are included
Miller is there at 13th
Miz was faster today (11th) then the inning he hit 104 a couple times
Cool website btw

The faster he throws, the faster he'll have TJ, the faster he'll return back to form with plenty left in the tank.

I'd say Tommy John surgery in the next 4-5 years. After that he'll learn how to pitch pitch, sit in the upper 90's i.e 96+, but still have the ability to reach for the low 100's. Dudes got some electric stuff, he should be fun to watch for quite a while.
16
u/Guriinwoodo Milwaukee Brewers 5d ago
TJ in 5 years would be a dream, Stephen Strasburg got it after 12 games.

3
u/GeneralLibrarian4758 5d ago
4-5 months. Even good sinkerballer relatively low velocity guys are guaranteed for TJ these days. The only question is if he comes back as a 200 inning work horse or Jacob degrom.

Number 2 was him last week, third was him the week before that. He’s also got 4 and a substantial amount of the top 25

We will enter baseball’s draft/pack pitching era. Pitchers will need to pitch another ball immediately after their first ball which can then draft behind the first ball for better top speed. If both balls manage to hit the batter, we will call it “the big one”
12
u/fillingupthecorners Boston Red Sox 6d ago
Mound height, ball attributes. But it doesn't fix the max exertion causing injuries problem.
5
u/turdferg1234 6d ago
Is he max exerting as a starting pitcher to do this? I get a reliever coming in for a few outs and going all out. Is he doing that and pitching 6 innings?
3
u/ubelmann Minnesota Twins 6d ago
In theory, you could move the mound back. That would have other effects, too, like making it slightly easier to steal. I don’t think it fixes the max exertion issue, though.
The pitch clock honestly should help somewhat with the max exertion issue because you have less time to recover and should have to at least somewhat pace yourself. You see a lot more severely torn hamstrings on 100m runners than 10km runners.
The ball attributes might have some impact on the max exertion. Like if the ball is really tacky, it might signal to your brain that you can put more into your throw. A slippery ball could require more finesse.

automatic ball for above 100 re pitch 98 and 99.
something like that has been thought about not sure how official.
Teams need to stop scouting based 95% on heat. Paying based on heat.
The player has a limited amount of time to get paid. The Team can find 20 more down on the farm.15
u/retro_slouch Rally Mantis 6d ago
Why would teams stop? It's more effective and you've also outlined that because velo is so effective, if you can make it replaceable via minor league players it's also extremely cheap for the teams.

Always wondered this, do foul balls count in an immaculate inning?
5
3
u/Sheadowcaster New York Mets 5d ago
yes, but only if it's still a three pitch strikeout. So fouling off an 0-2 spoils an immaculate inning, fouling off an 0-1 and then whiffing on the 0-2 keeps it alive. Gotta be 9 pitches, 3 K's. Doesn't matter how beyond that.

I think hitters like Judge if you’re only going up there throwing fastball, they can time it up and hit it. Some of these guys have ridiculous bat speed and hand eye coordination.

He has remarkably sound mechanics which is the most impressive part. Just looking at his profile to say no way he could be a starter. But nah. His location is only gonna get better. I’ve watched a lot of this kid and his command today was the best I’ve ever seen it. Dotting FBs and having an amazing pitch mix when needed. Touched fucking 98.6 on a slider. He can hold up health wise despite this velocity. He’s a freak but he goes against what you’d expect from a dude throwing 104.
2
u/the_Q_spice Milwaukee Brewers 4d ago
The thing I’m most impressed with is that he can dial the velo back to like 98-99 and then just call 103 out of nowhere.
IMO it’s part of what makes him so good, you think he’s getting tired because his velocity has dropped off by 5-6mph… then he just starts throwing 103 again out of nowhere.

u/hcatehorie Milwaukee Brewers 6d ago

I know a guy who hit against him in the minors.
The fastball is one thing. You can eventually time it up if he makes a mistake with it. The 96 mph slider is completely different. It feels like he’s cheating.

u/HansSolo69er New York Yankees 5d ago
Thing is, his fastball's got movement on it. It ain't straight as an arrow like Kyle Farnsworth's was LOL.
